Freeform Catoptric Design of Wide-Field-of-View Spectral Imagers for UV Spaceborne Observation of Mars

Vrije Universiteit Brussel
2026
Artyom
Petrosyan
Wide-field-of-view (WFOV) imaging systems are highly valued for space-based
observation. They are particularly challenging to design due to the presence of
off-axis aberrations. This thesis presents three novel wide-field-of-view (WFOV)
ultraviolet (UV) imaging architectures for the Mars Imager for Dust and Ice
clouds Monitoring (MIDIM): a 2D non-scanning multispectral imager, a 2D
scanning multispectral imager, and a 1D pushbroom multispectral imager. The UV
spectral range is intended and optimized for climate monitoring of Mars, including
atmospheric circulation and dynamics, dust cycles and storms, and water cycles,
clouds, and atmospheric chemistry.
Our research work tackles the optical design of WFOV UV imagers, exploring
different configurations and benefiting from freeform optical design. The key
challenges we faced were dealing with the off-axis aberrations due to the wide
fields, vignetting, and angle-of-incidence (AOI) reduction, while still keeping the
designs manufacturable and within the packaging requirements. Furthermore, the
UV operation range further increased the complexity and difficulty of the design as
the optical throughput needs to be increased due to low radiometric signals paired
with the small Airy disk compared to larger wavelength ranges. Finally, to ensure a
manufacturable design, a design-for-manufacturing approach was adopted, taking
system tolerances into account.
The 2D scanning multispectral imager showed the most optimal performance
despite its increased system complexity, such as the inclusion of a scan mirror,
while the 2D non-scanning multispectral imager showed the worst nominal
and radiometric performance. The 1D pushbroom multispectral imager showed
a comparable nominal performance to the 2D scanning system. However,
it lacked the tolerance robustness. The 2D scanning multispectral imager
shows an unprecedented performance featuring a WFOV of 48° × 10°, spatial
resolution of 2.50 km, F/# of 4.63, 80% of the encircled energy confined within
a radius of 2.15 µm, distortion of 7.30%, MTF ≥ 0.91 at 50 cycles/mm, volume of
170 × 150× 135 mm³, and smeared spatial resolutions between 5.96 km and
12.06 km for an SNR of 100 at 220 nm on Mars.
This work presents the full optical design methodology and results, adopting a
design for manufacturing approach, taking into account the path towards further
prototyping of the design. Consequently, with our research, we hope to pave
the way towards a novel UV space-based imaging telescope, enhancing space
exploration.

"ACCIDENTAL? VILLAGE URBANISM" WORKING WITH RESIDUAL SPACE: LESSONS FROM JAPAN FOR FLEMISH VILLAGES

KU Leuven
2026
Ciel
Dockx

Potential of African Diasporic Spatiality in Adaptive Reuse and Postcolonial Placemaking

Universiteit Hasselt

Brenda Jerotich
Maswan
By examining the postcolonial condition of the European metropole, as influenced by colonial and postcolonial migration, this thesis explores how African diasporic communities in Brussels engage in spatial practices as a legitimate form of architectural knowledge. Focusing on Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and Matongé, it argues that the incremental, vernacular adaptations through which African migrants appropriate and reinterpret the European built environment constitute an alternative approach to placemaking. This approach has often been overlooked by conventional heritage and planning systems.
Drawing on postcolonial theory, diasporic urbanism, and African diasporic spatial
practice, this thesis develops a critical framework for reading African diasporic spatial
practice not as informality or deficit, but as a culturally embedded, socially driven
architectural knowledge. This framework is tested through ethnographic research of
Luce Beeckmans and site-writing, following Jane Rendell’s concept of critical spatial
practice, and applied through a design project for a former industrial complex at Rue
De Courtrai and Rue d’Ostende in Molenbeek.
The design proposes an adaptive reuse strategy grounded in the African diasporic
logic of negotiated visibility—the practice of managing presence and withdrawal
across the city and building scales simultaneously. By preserving existing street
façades, directing transformation inward through the inner block, and retaining existing
users, the project translates African diasporic spatial qualities into an architectural
methodology capable of producing an inclusive social infrastructure while resisting the
displacement pressures of ongoing urban renewal. In doing so, it positions adaptive
reuse not as a technical or aesthetic strategy but as a cultural and political redefinition
of space—one that recognises the African diaspora community in Molenbeek as
spatial agents in postcolonial placemaking.

Generative AI-Based Design of Electric Machines — A CVAE-based Framework for the Optimisation of Interior Permanent Magnet Motors for the Automotive Market

KU Leuven
2026
Lorenz
De Maeyer
Electric traction motors for hybrid and battery vehicles are currently designed by
wrapping a finite-element key-performance-indicator (KPI) evaluator in an evolu
tionary optimisation loop, an approach that can take days of compute on a multi-core
node per customer case. This thesis addresses the same problem from the inverse
direction: given a target peak performance profile together with the electrical limits
imposed by the inverter and battery, generate a diverse set of compliant double-V
interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) geometries. The pro
posed framework combines three components, using a dataset of 85384 physically
valid samples obtained by latin hypercube sampling of the 17 free geometric pa
rameters: (i) a residual multilayer-perceptron surrogate that maps geometry and
electrical limits to the 80-point peak torque–speed curve through a 19-component
principal-component bottleneck, (ii) a conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE)
with a 15-dimensional latent space that learns to generate performance-compliant
geometries, given the working conditions, and (iii) a gradient-based latent space
optimisation stage that refines a sampled candidate towards minimal volume under
soft performance-compliance and structural-integrity penalties driven by the frozen
surrogate.

On the held-out test set, the surrogate reaches a mean relative L2 error of 0.62%
on the denormalised torque curve at sub-millisecond inference cost. A performance
regularised CVAE variant, which augments the evidence lower bound with a dif
ferentiable compliance penalty derived from the frozen surrogate, lifts the mean
prior-sampling compliance on eight industrial conditions from 49.1% to 75.7% while
preserving roughly 86% of the per-feature design-range coverage. The subsequent
latent-space optimisation returns a compliant candidate for every one of the eight
conditions and for both CVAE variants, converging within roughly 100 iterations and
finishing in about 45s per condition on a single CPU core. A single FEM run con
firms that the optimised torque–speed curve passes through the requested operating
points. The framework therefore compresses what is currently a days-long search
into a sub-minute generative step. Thermal, efficiency, noise-vibration-harshness,
and demagnetisation behaviour remain out of scope and are identified as the prior
ity directions for further work.

ORVAL: DETERMINISTIC, FAULT-TOLERANT TELEMETRY VISUALIZATION FOR SPACE TESTING & OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENTS

Hiervoor werd ORVAL (Orchestrator for Remote Visualization and Analysis of Logged Telemetry) ontwikkeld in samenwerking met Redwire.

The spaces of democratic self-management and collective care in cooperative student housing: Insights from Ghent and Collegium Academicum Heidelberg.

Lies

A Language of Silence: Lived Experiences of Return among Burundian Returnees in Bujumbura Mairie

KU Leuven
2025
Nina
SOUDAN
Silence is often described in paradoxical terms, “loud”, “heavy”, “muted”, or “deafening”, reflecting its complex and contradictory nature. This dissertation explores the lived experiences and narratives of Burundian returnees, with a focus on the events of 1993 and 2015. Marked by violence, displacement and return, these events serve as points of departure for understanding returnees’ interconnected narratives that emerge from realities of political conflict and forced displacement. In particular, it examines how silence is constructed and expressed within these narratives. While expressions of silence vary, returnees’ experiences are consistently marked by the space silence occupies and the meaning it holds in relation to how return is perceived and interpreted. Based on short-term ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Bujumbura, Burundi, in March 2025, this research uses a combination of various qualitative methods, including participant observation, semi-structured interviews, informal meetings and interactions.

In a context where a highly politicised discourse surrounding return converges with a long-standing institutionalised culture of silence, this dissertation argues that silence in Burundi functions as an ambivalent space of negotiation between being silent and being silenced, capable of both upholding and subverting power. Drawing on the notion of historicity, the relationality between the past, present and future, it explores how silence operates as a language through which returnees articulate the complexities of their return. In the end, what emerges is a form of enlisement in silence, a sinking into the language of silence that permeates the everyday, as a response to legacies of violence and displacement.

Mapping the Margin

KU Leuven
2025
Riet
Nonneman
This thesis explores how architectural practice engages with the socio-
political realities of displacement through methods of subjective storytelling
and spatial observation. Set within the broader frameworks of
temporality and marginality, the focus lies on two reception centres for
asylum seekers in Flanders: Opvangcentrum Westakkers – Rode Kruis
and Rode Kruisopvangcentrum Beveren. It does so by mapping how individuals
negotiate homemaking practices within these temporary and
institutionalised contexts.
By adopting a position of critical proximity, the analysis draws on sketching,
informal interviews, and on-site presence as tools to map space in
both a physical and emotional sense. Through this approach, personal
subjectivity is not masked, but embraced as a lens through which to reveal
hidden spatial narratives and to question the traditional role of the
architect.
This socio-spatial reflection is grounded in intersectional theory, building
on the work of researchers such as Luce Beeckmans, Huda Tayob and
Seethaler-Wari. It seeks to reframe the architectural gaze towards the
margin, as defined by bell hooks, not as a zone of lack or exclusion, but
as a space of resilience, improvisation, and agency. Rather than offering
a design solution, this thesis proposes a method of architectural engagement
that centres listening, mapping, and the empowering of voices that
are often left unheard.
Ultimately, this thesis aims to challenge dominant architectural modes by
foregrounding the potential of alternative, slower, and more humane ways
of reading and working with space, particularly in contexts where uncertainty
and hope coexist.

Deleu

Metastable strings in the Early Universe: Stability & gravitational wave signal

Vrije Universiteit Brussel
2025
Maxime
Grandjean
When fundamental symmetries break during early universe phase transitions the resulting scalar field can develop non trivial space dependent configurations of non-vanishing energy density, known as defects; examples of which include domain walls, cosmic strings and monopoles. These defects form a network of extended object, which can play an active role in the dynamics of the early universe, such as generating a gravitational wave background (GWB). Remarkably, Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) experiments have recently reported the first evidence of a GWB, making the study of defects particularly timely and relevant. While the PTA excess is most likely of astrophysical origin, an exciting prospect is a GWB of cosmological origin. In this thesis, a GWB generated by cosmic strings in the early universe is studied. In particular, a model of two subsequent phase transitions is considered in which, under certain conditions, metastable cosmic strings can emerge during the second transition. Specifically, metastable strings have a probability to decay through a quantum tunneling process in which monopoles are nucleated along the strings, effectively reducing their lifetime. Within this model, we will perform a classical stability analysis on the string solutions in order to investigate whether they are long lived enough to have any impactful phenomenology. Finally, we discuss the implications of the determined stability conditions on the predicted gravitational wave spectrum, and how it affects the detectability of this scenario in GW experiments, including PTA.

Productive Campus: Future-proofing Vienna's economy through productive education

KU Leuven
2025
Britt
Van Gulck
Productive Campus is a pilot project reimagining the relationship between vocational
education and urban production by exploring a hybrid infrastructure that enables
them to coexist, and benefits both the employees and students in building a resilient,
local, and circular economy.

In a time where many cities struggle with issues such as congestion, affordability, in-
adequate infrastructure, and unemployment, Vienna repeatedly tops the ranking of
the most livable cities in Europe. Due to rapid demographic expansion, infrastructural
demands, and evolving economic systems, the search for sustainable development
strategies of the post-industrial city has been dominating political discourse on urban
transformation over the last decades.

However, a different voice is heard, one that advocates for a re-appreciation of
productive economies as a driver for sustainable urban development. Production
has become an indispensable component of an innovative, sustainable urban econ-
omy due to the increasing interrelationships with knowledge, research and develop-
ment, and services. These productive industries are essential for instigating econom-
ic growth, creating jobs for a wide range of workers, and stimulating infrastructure
development. Additionally, their high contribution to Vienna’s value creation and
collaboration with businesses, communities and governments can further facilitate
urban development by addressing specific challenges. Hence, the City of Vienna developed the ‘Produktive Stadt’ in 2017 in close partnership with the Vienna Chamber
of Commerce and the Federation of Austrian Industry.

The mutual benefits of collaboration between on the one hand knowledge institutions in favour of innovation, adaptability, and on the other hand a more networked,
collaborative economy, no longer need to be the domain of universities and larger
research facilities. This thesis takes as a stance the potential for Austria’s wide range
of vocational disciplines in specialized schools for students at the Upper Secondary
Level. Such education trajectories prepare them for future employment in the pro-
ductive sector. It raises the question whether we can develop alternative models from
this collaboration for an inclusive environment for makers with various financial and
expert backgrounds, as well as ensuring qualitative, sustainable education through
early hands-on experience.

Through literature and policy evaluation, spatial analysis, and design research, a personal design proposal seeks to integrate socio-economic, and architectural strategies
in a newly emerging urban context through the architecture of a future-proof mixed-use productive education building.

The resulting architecture envisions adaptable, hybrid spaces that cater to traditional
and new industries, providing a flexible and sustainable environment for small businesses, self-employed people, and start-ups. The integration of these real-world working conditions in addition to the required general infrastructure for education, creates
an environment in which students are motivated to become good craftspeople. The
focus on inspiring makers goes even beyond the student population, since the local
diy’er, teachers and professionals are able to enjoy lifelong practical and theoretical
skill building. The importance of qualitative education and the re-integration of production on a mixed-use site, will by extension have a positive impact on enforcing
this economic growth and stability as well as creating a local identity for its residents.

Idealized bodies, internalized pain

The body as a muse
How many times have we heard or read this phrase?
From a very young age, we are constantly bombarded
with images of the body—whether in cartoons portraying
ultra-thin, flawless princesses or superheroes with
hyper-muscular physiques. These images, which we car-
ry with us daily, are not harmless representations. They
are vehicles of aesthetic ideals that, much like those
seen throughout art history, have taught us to perceive
the body in specific, culturally determined ways.
Over the centuries, artistic depictions of the human
body—from classical Greek statues and Renaissance
works to Cubist interpretations and contemporary body
art—have played a key role in constructing and perpe-
tuating unattainable beauty standards, shaping both so-
cial and individual expectations. But how exactly has the
representation of the body in art history contributed to
the construction of these aesthetic ideals and canons—
so deeply rooted that they influence contemporary body
perception? And how has this influence, compounded by
the rise of social media and advertising, become a sour-
ce of psychological distress and a possible contributor to
mental health issues such as eating disorders?
This thesis seeks to explore these questions by tracing
the evolution of aesthetic canons from antiquity to their
modern-day rupture, and by offering a neuroscientific,
philosophical, and phenomenological investigation into
how humans perceive themselves—whether through the
imagery in paintings or the visuals that surround us daily.
To carry out this research, a combination of scientific,
artistic, and bibliographic sources has been employed,
alongside a qualitative analysis based on open inter-
views and the collection of personal diaries, as discus-
sed in Chapter 4.
This study does not merely observe how the body has
been represented; it questions how such representations
have shaped a collective imagination around the “ideal”
body—and how that imagination continues to impact in-
dividual self-perception. The aim is twofold: on one hand,
to understand how and where these mechanisms that
generate aesthetic norms originated—analyzing how the
body has been used as a foundational element for the
rules embedded in modern society; on the other, to in-
vestigate the psychological and social impact this exerts
on younger generations. To this the thesis is divided into
four chapters.
The first provides a historical-artistic overview of body
representation across different artistic periods. The se-
cond chapter explores the meaning of body perception,
including body image, body schema, and the distinction
between the lived body and the idealized body. The third
chapter examines the connection between the body and
aesthetic norms, offering a more philosophical and phe-
nomenological interpretation of reality.
.
Finally, the fourth chapter introduces the field resear-
ch conducted with students at KASK School of Arts
in Ghent, with reflections and analyses of the inter-
view responses. In a world that expects perfection
from us—professionally, socially, economically, and
even personally—there is no space for failure when
it comes to the body. This reality is so deeply woven
into our cultural fabric that it becomes nearly impos-
sible to detach ourselves from it. This thesis aims to
be a point of reflection—a space for questioning why
we are so profoundly conditioned by what we should
look like or become, rather than focusing on simply
living the one life we are given.

Sonic Resistance: How Does the Iranian Metal Scene Function as a Form of Cultural and Political Resistance in an Authoritarian State?

This thesis investigates how Iran’s underground Heavy Metal1 scene operates as a form of cultural and political resistance within the constraints of an authoritarian state. Drawing on qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews, document analysis of lyrics and artwork, and digital ethnography of online communities, the study examines how musicians and fans negotiate political identity despite censorship and moral policing. The analysis is anchored in theoretical contributions from sound studies, subcultural theory, and resistance scholarship, particularly the works of Jacques Attali and Steve Goodman. Four interrelated analytical lenses are proposed: Sonic Resistance Identity (the formation of political subjectivity through sound), Repetitive Resistance (Camus’s Sisyphean logic applied to enduring subcultural defiance), Digital Vernacular Resistance (locally adapted strategies for
navigating surveillance), and Subcultural Infiltration (the slow diffusion of Metal aesthetics into mainstream youth culture due to infrastructural fatigue). Findings show that participation in metal, despite often not overtly political, is inherently oppositional in Iran, with distinct challenges for women, whose engagement constitutes “double dissidence.” The study concludes that resistance in this context is less about overt revolution and more about the sustained creation of alternative cultural spaces, where sound becomes both a medium and a metaphor for autonomy.

Spatial transcriptomics was deemed Nature’s method of the year in 2020. Because of these novel technologies, it is now possible to analyze subcellular RNA localization in a systematic and large scale manner. This will allow us to answer interesting fundamental biological questions in a variety of biological domains, in health and disease. However, computational methods to characterize subcellular RNA localization are still in their infancy. We therefore aim to tackle the following questions as part of this master thesis study:
How does one automatically classify whether a gene shows a subcellular localized expression pattern or not?
● Using supervised classification
○ Which classification algorithm is best suited? And how do we train it optimally
○ What is the performance of the optimal model?
○ Can we aggregate model classifications of a gene over every cell, and can we create a reliable statistical test to discern the probability that a gene localizes non-randomly?
○ If we can classify patterns from non-patterns, can we classify which specific pattern it is?
● Can we infer subcellular localization directly from the latent space embedding of an in-house developed neural network model, without training a classifier first?
● Do these results on simulated data generalize to real biological/experimental data?

Belonging Beyond Borders: Identity Narratives and Feelings of Belonging among South Sudanese Refugees in Northern Uganda

Continued mobility has spawned a renewal of interest in the saliency of borders, opposing strengthened border securitisation to a borderless and globalised world. Current representations of the modern sovereign territorial nation-state and reification of territorial borders are increasingly contested, argued to be inconsistent with the construction and delineation of borders and boundaries in non-territorial terms.

Drawing on a micro-analysis of borders and boundaries, the purpose of this thesis is to uncover a ‘thick description’ of the ways in which South Sudanese refugees navigate borders during their mobility trajectories across the borderland between Uganda and South Sudan. Following refugees’ mobility trajectories, this thesis further aims to explore the threefold relation between subjective perceptions of borders and boundaries, the circumscription of communities of belonging, and evolving identity narratives. The particular borderland between Uganda and South Sudan, used as case study for this thesis, is characterised by a range of dynamic cross-border interactions and relations between both sides of the international border. While borders can divide sub-ethnic and/or linguistic communities, borderlands also lead to the creation of new and complex identities, often interrelated through linguistic, tribal, and cultural ties, as the findings of this research have indicated.

Based on semi-structured interviews conducted in different refugee settlements in northern Uganda, the results highlight a multidimensional perception of borders among refugees: both in a literal and symbolic sense. Although a deep sense of longing for South Sudan, and subsequent national identification, remains, refugees have demonstrated differing nationalistic, tribal, and linguistic identifications. As identification is not a linear process, affected by the evolution of time and space, refugees have demonstrated a multi- layered and interrelated process of nationalistic, tribal, and linguistic identification, grounded across multiple locations at once. By rethinking the logic of borders beyond their territorial materialisation, and by including a symbolic dimension (referring to cross-border tribal and linguistic boundaries), this thesis illustrates the diversity and complexity underlying refugee’s sense of belonging and interrelated identity narratives, subjected to continuous processes of identity negotiations.

The Political Imperative of Public Space - Public sphere and space in the Brussels Capital Region

KU Leuven

This thesis explores the political imperative of public space in the Brussels Capital Region. The city-region, marked by administrative complexity and political stratification, is today also subject to a disconnect between citizens and representative democratic instances. This disaffection is exacerbated by broader political polarisation and hyper-politicization within Belgian society. Furthermore, despite discussions about a reappropriation of public space, true progress remains relative and often coincides with creeping processes of depoliticization.
Public space, however, plays a crucial role within the public sphere, which has been influentially theorised by Jürgen Habermas and Hannah Arendt. Habermas's historical analysis of the bourgeois public sphere highlights principles of accessibility, rational deliberation, and reasoned opinion-formation. This has been critiqued by Nancy Fraser for its exclusion of subaltern groups, leading to her concept of multiple counter-public spheres. Arendt in a different stance emphasises plurality as fundamental to politics, with the public sphere then being the site for action and speech.
The public sphere, although non-dismissible for forming critical public opinion and active citizenship in contemporary democracy, is today challenged by delocalisation and disembodiment. Therefore, in response to challenges to both sphere and space, the political imperative of public space proves essential to (re)consider. Public space must in this regard be seen as a relational entity with socio-physical and spatio-temporal dimensions. Characteristics such as accessibility, inclusivity, and potential for transgression are key, yet public spaces are more often dominated by patterns of e.g. securitization, privatization, and commodification.
The conceptualization of political public space in this thesis considers it as either a playground or a theatre, focusing on democratic performance of both citizens and architecture in itself. The general framework is subsequently applied to the case of the Brussels Capital Region. An analysis of XDGA’s non-realised design for the Schuman Square, a significant political and symbolic site, illustrates the potential and limitations of formal public spaces for embedding political action. In contrast, but refraining from hierarchisation, Filter Café Filtré Atelier’s OpenStreets project demonstrates the potential of informal public spaces to foster political engagement and activism around themes of common interest. The Decoratelier case study ultimately emphasizes the importance of genuine political engagement in public space, warning against superficial participation.
Addressing the political imperative of public space proves crucial for enabling citizen engagement within societal transformation. While public space alone cannot resolve polarisation, it can contribute by making abstract disagreements tangible and fostering continuous negotiation and debate. The thesis identifies key socio-physical and architectural considerations for evaluating the political imperative of public spaces, such as representation, control, and multi-publicity. The goal is to create a framework for spaces that represent both diverse publics and society, while enabling collective action and participation. After all, architects have a significant role in designing these spaces through re-engaging politics and aesthetics by treating space as an active participant in societal and political dynamics.

ECHOES OF TRANSFORMATION: Seawater Iodine Extraction Pavilion | Explorative architectural strategies for dynamic interactions between water and reappearing land within Polish coastal context (54°38’21”N 18°30’56”E).

KU Leuven

Pawelczak
In the landscape of Polish coastal patches, the tension between water and land
resonates. This study focuses on the exploration of an ecologically specific zone
within the Baltic Sea—the Bay of Puck, enclosed by the mainland and the peninsula.
Utilizing various media, from graphics to animations, the research aims to capture
and convey the observations and experiences gathered during travel. Central to this
study is an atlas that combines exploration defined as echoes and transformations
within a boundless and unpredictable context, reflecting the rather nonlinear
journey of this thesis.
The initial focus is on the coastal background, highlighting remnants of uncommon
infrastructures that stand as testaments to both past human activity and nature’s
impact. While fortifications are intended to provide defense, they remain vulnerable
to the forces of dynamic nature. Amidst rapid climate change and anthropogenic
impacts on the landscape, this area, though bounded by natural parameters controlled
by the Marine Acts, faces pressures of continuous development. The thesis delves
into the ecological aspects of Polish coastal areas, emphasizing how these factors can
inform and shape the space itself.
The study introduces findings that underscore the dynamic interaction between
these elements, especially in the context of reappearing underwater land. The
collected observations provide measures to create environmental scenarios across
various spatial and temporal phases, representing the site’s transformative nature
and gradual transition between water and land through environmental adaptation.
By exploring adaptive architectural practices that respect and respond to the natural
cycles of the environment, the study encourages different strategies, providing a
spatial intervention, as a research outcome, that is both reactive and integrating.
Ultimately, it aims to preserve the rhythm of the coastal landscape found on-site. The
distinct sense of time at the seaside is shaped by the rhythm of tides and fluctuating
water levels. The evolving landscape further enhances the comprehension of this
dynamic environment.
The research question guiding this investigation is: How can architectural practice
preserve and emphasize the dynamic interaction between land and water? The
thesis explores architectural strategies that harmonize the built environment with
the ever-changing natural world, enhancing the sensory engagement of people with
the dynamic landscape.

Investigating vegetational survey efficiency using a long-term phenological survey along a subarctic elevation gradient

The warming of the global climate system, particularly pronounced in Arctic regions, poses significant challenges to plant species, communities and ecosystems. Understanding the dynamics of Arctic flora in response to this changing climate is crucial for predicting and mitigating its impacts. Long-term vegetational surveys are crucial monitoring tools to capture these dynamics in species diversity, distribution and phenology. Nevertheless, their observations and projections are frequently based on data lacking sufficient temporal and spatial resolution and often neglect the error caused by imperfect observations. Here, we show that species detection is influenced not only by the inherent dynamics of vegetation, including seasonal and year-to-year fluctuations and the broader context of long-term climate change, but also by other temporal, spatial and species-specific variation within the plant community. Interdependent effects of factors such as growing season temperature, seasonal timing of observation, elevation, total plot species richness, and species-specific traits were found to have a crucial impact on species observation accuracy, often manifesting through changes in phenology and morphology across different dimensions. As such, the changing climate directly and indirectly influences these factors through space and time, making it challenging to make a distinction between inherent species dynamics and inaccurate observations. Our findings highlight the need for multiple surveys per year, effective timing of monitoring within the growing season, year-to-year comparisons and adopting adequate spatial scales to account for imperfect observations, especially when studying species’ temporal dynamics. These insights contribute to broader discussions on the complexities of ecological monitoring and underscore the importance of adapting adequate survey methods to effectively capture species dynamics in a changing climate. This to avoid making misleading conclusions, resulting in over- or underestimations of species dynamics.
