Deze masterproef is een zoektocht naar oriëntatie in de moeilijke taak van hedendaagse architectuur om te reageren op een steeds heterogenere multiculturele samenleving zonder gemeenschappelijk wereldbeeld. Terwijl het gebruik van culturele referenties steeds meer wordt betwist, probeer ik aan te tonen dat het onmogelijk is om het sociaal-culturele volledig uit te wissen uit het door mensen gemaakte object. Omdat ik deze voorwaardelijke onafscheidelijkheid tussen de materiële aard van objecten en menselijke creatie accepteer, hanteer ik in de hele scriptie een materialistisch perspectief om de grote verscheidenheid aan materialen en vaardigheden die beschikbaar zijn in de casestudy te analyseren, en erken ik ze niet alleen als een mogelijkheid om ecologisch te bouwen, maar vooral om een vreugde uit te lokken die gesitueerd zou kunnen worden in het culturele domein, die je kunst zou kunnen noemen, maar die eigenlijk voortkomt uit de zichtbaar weergegeven contextuele omstandigheden.

This thesis examines Okada Toshiki’s Ground and Floor and Time’s Journey from the perspective of
post- and nonhumanism, especially in the vein of those dead. Within the various strands of post- and
non-humanism, the focus is on ghosts, especially as described by Jacques Derrida - who coined the
term “hauntology” - and by Mark Fisher, who applied the term to his theory. Post- and nonhuman
philosophy have the potential to inspire creative, innovative and effective ways of re-thinking the
human that surpasses mere humanist self-hatred. By staging ghosts and drawing attention to
nonhuman others, Okada’s theatre fits within this project. I would like to propose that the ghost can
be used as a metaphor within a more fruitful post-anthropocentric worldview. This would be a
Hauntoloscene, a world in which we gain spirit by recontextualizing our relationship with what is not.
The figure of the ghost allows the past to be brought into the present.

Deze scriptie bestudeert de mens-smartphone assemblage vanuit het posthumanistische en feministisch nieuw-materialistische kader van Donna Haraway. Zij maakt komaf met binaire opposities en legt de nadruk op verweving en de co-constitutie van verschillende elementen. Deze scriptie neemt drie concepten van Haraway onder de loep - de cyborg, companion species en kin - en past die toe op de verweving tussen mens en smartphone.
