Long-term dynamics in ruderal plant communities through climate and land use change in the Scandinavian mountains

Historische thriller: menselijke verstoring 120 jaar geleden in een subarctisch berggebied had vergelijkbaar effect als klimaatverandering nu

 

Het begon met de aanleg van een treinspoor

Dit verhaal begint in 1903, bij de voltooiing van een treinspoor in Abisko, een subarctisch berggebied dat voorheen slecht te bereiken was en waar toerisme nog geen leven leidde. In het meest noordelijke deel van Zweden, tussen vele bergen en ongerepte natuur, ligt dit kleine afgelegen dorp dat doorheen de tijd enorm geliefd is geworden bij wandelaars. Tijdens de bouw van het treinspoor werd een onverharde parallelweg, de Rallarvägen, gebruikt als transportweg om met paard en wagen materiaal te vervoeren. Het gevolg? Een volledig verwoeste vegetatie en ophopingen van afval- en mesthopen rondom het spoor en de Rallarvägen. En dat trok al snel plantensoorten aan die kenmerkend zijn voor het inpalmen van verstoorde terreinen: de ruderalen.

Kort na de opening van het treinspoor in 1903 volgde de opening van Abisko’s eerste hotel dat het toerisme in gang zette. Sindsdien bezoeken ook veel wetenschappers de regio, aangetrokken door de alpenflora en de verscheidenheid in landschappen. Doorheen de jaren is er uitgebreid wetenschappelijk onderzoek gedaan in de Abisko-regio en zijn er vele surveys opgesteld van de aanwezige flora, waaronder ook langsheen de Rallarvägen (nu een wandelpad) in de jaren waarin er grote veranderingen in landgebruik afspeelden.

De bereikbaarheid en het toerisme in de Abisko-regio werden verder bevorderd door de voltooiing van de eerste verharde weg (de E10) in 1982, die parallel ligt aan het treinspoor en de Rallarvägen. Net als treinsporen staan wegen erom bekend om ruderalen aan te trekken omdat de aanleg ervan gepaard gaat met veranderingen in de bodemstructuur en -samenstelling. Vanuit deze plaatsen kunnen ruderalen zich verder in de regio verspreiden, op eigen kracht of bijvoorbeeld door mee te liften met wandelaars die de bergen intrekken.

De Rallarvägen

Op weg naar Abisko!

Geïntrigeerd door deze prachtige regio en haar geschiedenis reisde ik in de zomer van 2021 af naar Abisko om de vegetatie langsheen de Rallarvägen opnieuw te onderzoeken. Samen met vegetatiegegevens uit 1903, 1913, en 1983, vergaarde ik een zeldzame dataset met enorm veel mogelijkheden. Zo kon ik bijvoorbeeld onderscheid maken tussen twee belangrijke perioden: 1. 1903 en 1913, waarin voornamelijk menselijke verstoring zoals landgebruik invloed had, en 2. 1983 en 2021, waarin menselijke verstoring én klimaatverandering samen grote invloed hadden. Dit bood een unieke kans om het verschil tussen de effecten van landgebruik en klimaatverandering op de ruderale vegetatie te onderzoeken. Ik verzamelde extra ecologische informatie over de ruderalen, zoals hun temperatuuraffiniteit. Deze variabele vertelt je in wat voor klimaat de soort van nature voorkomt op een schaal van 1 tot 5. Een soort kan bijvoorbeeld koude- of warmteliefhebbend zijn. Soorten met cijfer 1 komen voor in (sub)arctische gebieden, terwijl soorten met cijfer 5 te vinden zijn in de tropen.

 

Zijn ruderalen een probleem en waarom is de geschiedenis van landgebruik zo belangrijk?

Door klimaatopwarming zoeken vele plantensoorten koelere gebieden op. Ze verschuiven hun verspreidingsgebied naar het noorden of naar grotere hoogten. Dit gebeurt enerzijds door inheemse soorten in de zoektocht naar een toevluchtsoort en anderzijds door exotische soorten die hierdoor de mogelijkheid hebben om zich op nieuwe plaatsen te vestigen.

Ruderalen zijn gekarakteriseerd door een hoge zaadproductie, een snelle groei en het vermogen om zich makkelijk te verspreiden. Plantensoorten met deze strategie zijn daarom vaak de exotische soorten die we in verre gebieden aantreffen. Ruderalen hoeven geen probleem te vormen, zolang ze geen kans krijgen om invasief te worden.

Ruderalen langs de Rallarvägen

Uit mijn onderzoek bleek dat juist de aanleg van het treinspoor in 1903 een grote groep warmteliefhebbende, exotische ruderalen had aangetrokken die zich tot in 1913 langsheen de Rallarvägen hadden gevestigd – in een periode dat klimaatopwarming nog niet aan de orde was. De Abisko-regio ligt 200 km binnen de poolcirkel en kent daarom strenge winters waar deze warmteliefhebbende soorten niet van houden. Toch hielden zij stand in deze regio voor minimaal 10 jaar voordat ze weer verdwenen waren tegen 1983. Sterker nog, klimaatverandering, dat sinds de jaren ’80 voor een opwarming zorgt dat vandaag vier keer zo snel gaat in subarctische gebieden, bleek niet zo een duidelijke invloed te hebben op de aantrekking van soorten uit warmere streken.

Hoe komt zoiets contra-intuïtiefs tot stand? De belangrijkste reden is de veerkrachtigheid van de Abisko-regio. Ondanks dat klimaatopwarming hier al extreme gevolgen toont, blijven de harde winters een te grote drempel voor exotische ruderalen om de vegetatie te domineren. Daarnaast is de aantrekking van warmteliefhebbende soorten naar deze subarctische regio blijkbaar niet enkel toe te wijzen aan klimaatopwarming, maar gebeurde dit ook door de aanleg van het treinspoor meer dan 120 jaar geleden. Die aanleg bleek een dusdanig grote verstoring te zijn geweest dat ruderalen zich in 2021 nog steeds het liefst dicht bij het spoor bevinden.

Deze langdurige en contra-intuïtieve effecten van het treinspoor bewijzen dat het belangrijk is om op de hoogte te zijn van de geschiedenis van landgebruik in een systeem. Dit allereerst om het systeem dat wordt onderzocht goed te kunnen begrijpen, maar ook om te kunnen voorspellen hoe de vegetatie in de toekomst eruit zou kunnen zien en daarbij het functioneren van het ecosysteem.
