Een kijk onder de mantel van exhibitionisme: het ervaren van exhibitionistisch gedrag binnen de Nederlandstalige bevolking.

Stelt u zich voor dat u onderweg bent naar een vriend of vriendin. Het is middag. U overweegt om op weg naar uw afspraak langs het park te gaan, omdat het mooi weer is. Even later wandelt u door het park. Plots hoort u geluid tussen de struiken waar u langsloopt. U kijkt opzij en ziet in het struikgewas een man met zijn broek op zijn enkels. Zijn intieme delen zijn volledig zichtbaar en hij is aan het masturberen terwijl hij naar u kijkt.

Dit is slechts één van de vele voorbeeldsituaties waarin exhibitionistisch gedrag zich voordoet. Gelukkig is er de laatste jaren meer en meer aandacht voor slachtoffers van seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag. Ondanks de verhoogde aandacht voor deze problematiek is het fenomeen exhibitionisme nog sterk onderbelicht. Naar aanleiding van deze leemte in de literatuur werd, op vraag van de forensische expertisecel binnen Thomas More, een onderzoek naar de frequentie van exhibitionisme binnen de Nederlandstalige bevolking opgezet.

Frequentie binnen de Nederlandstalige bevolking

Binnen dit onderzoek werden 608 respondenten uit de Nederlandstalige bevolking bevraagd of zij al eerder geconfronteerd werden met exhibitionistische gedragingen. Hieruit bleek dat 45.9% ooit al slachtoffer en/of getuige was van exhibitionisme. Dit betreft met andere woorden bijna de helft van de gehele steekproef. Daarnaast gaf meer dan de helft van de slachtoffers en getuigen (respectievelijk 53.5% en 57.5%) aan dat zij hier al meerdere keren mee werden geconfronteerd.

Doorsnee slachtoffer- en daderprofiel binnen dit onderzoek

Wanneer een daderprofiel wordt geschetst op basis van dit onderzoek, gaat het hoofdzakelijk om een man (97.4%), tussen de 18 en 55 jaar oud. De pleger was doorgaans verzorgd. Ongeveer 40.0% van de plegers masturbeerde tijdens de feiten.

Wat betreft het profiel van het doorsnee slachtoffer, kan geconcludeerd worden dat bijna de helft (40.0%) minderjarig was op het moment dat zij geconfronteerd werden met het exhibitionistische gedrag. Verder bleek de pleger voor de meerderheid van de slachtoffers (84.4%) een onbekende te zijn.

Voorts zou de daad zich het frequentst op straat hebben afgespeeld en vond het voornamelijk in de namiddag plaats. Bij meer dan de helft van de incidenten (56.8%) waren er ook andere mensen in de buurt. Het valt echter op dat bij het grootste deel van de gevallen (65.8%) niemand die op het moment aanwezig was, iets heeft ondernomen. Tot slot schatte een aanzienlijk deel van de slachtoffers (35.2%) de pleger als gevaarlijk in.

Impact op slachtoffers

Aan het voorval terugdenken, vermijdingsgedrag vertonen, verminderd gevoel van veiligheid ervaren, voorzichtiger zijn en angst ervaren om gelijkaardige feiten mee te maken werden als meest voorkomende kortetermijngevolgen aangegeven door de slachtoffers. Slechts 10.6% ondervond daarentegen geen nadelige gevolgen op korte termijn. Op vlak van langetermijngevolgen van de slachtoffers werden aan het voorval denken, voorzichtiger zijn, verminderd gevoel van veiligheid ervaren en angstig zijn voor het meemaken van gelijkaardige feiten het meest genoemd. Hier bleek dat 20.4% van de slachtoffers geen nadelige gevolgen ervoer op lange termijn.

De korte- en langetermijngevolgen lijken dus in dezelfde lijn te lopen, met uitzondering van het stellen van vermijdingsgedrag. Deze komt vaker voor op korte termijn dan op lange termijn. Ook de impact van het voorval werd bevraagd bij de slachtoffers. Hieruit bleek dat ongeveer 1⁄4 (24.1%) een blijvende impact ondervindt van de feiten. Een aanzienlijk aantal van de slachtoffers blijft hier dus nog lange tijd mee zitten.

Aangiftebereidheid van slachtoffers

Tot slot werd de aangiftebereidheid van de slachtoffers bevraagd om een accurater beeld te krijgen van het fenomeen naast de officiële cijfers op basis van aangiftes die een onderschatting zouden kunnen betekenen. Uit de bevraging van de aangiftebereidheid van de slachtoffers bleek dat een miniem aantal van de slachtoffers (14.1%) het voorval daadwerkelijk meldde aan de politie. Er is dus een duidelijk verschil tussen het aantal slachtoffers en het aantal aangiften. Wanneer er daarentegen wel aangifte werden gedaan, gaf de meerderheid (70.2%) aan zich ernstig genomen te voelen. Een klein aantal (18.9%) gaf echter het tegenovergestelde aan.

Opvallend was dat slachtoffers het voorval vaker aan vrienden, familie en partner meldden. Hier gaf eveneens een meerderheid (77.9%) aan zich ernstig genomen te voelen door deze personen. Dit percentage verschilt niet erg van de respondenten die het voorval bij de politie gemeld hebben. Hier dient wel rekening gehouden te worden met het verschil in aantallen.
