De begingeneriek: Zomaar startsignaal van de film?

Een spel van (in-)leiden en misleiden

 

Een geweerloop met daarin een wandelende man, begeleid door het bekendste nummer van componist Monty Norman. Elke filmfanaat weet dan onmiddellijk wat te verwachten; een spannend spionageverhaal uit de James Bond-filmreeks. De franchise toont perfect aan hoe filmmakers al vanaf de eerste seconden verwachtingen kunnen scheppen bij de kijker.

Begingenerieken: what’s in a name?!

Wanneer het over filmgeschiedenis gaat, wordt vaak hetzelfde duidelijk; de allereerste bioscoopfilms en de vaak peperdure blockbusters van vandaag liggen mijlenver uiteen. Toch is het doorheen de jaren steeds belangrijk gebleven om bij de start al verwachtingen te scheppen bij de kijkers. Hierbij wordt vaak handig gebruik gemaakt van de begingeneriek; een kort fragment aan het begin van een film, herkenbaar door de naamsvermelding van de belangrijkste productiemedewerkers.

Stille films uit het begin van de vorige eeuw hadden vaak zeer eenvoudige begingenerieken met witte letters op een zwarte achtergrond. Ze moesten vooral de namen van filmsterren vermelden, zodat de kijker meteen wist wie in beeld zou verschijnen. De gelijkenis met tekstborden, gebruikt voor dialogen, was onmiskenbaar. Zij verdwenen, de begingeneriek bleef. Vooral vanaf de jaren ‘60 werd er gretig met intro’s geëxperimenteerd. De opening hoefde niet meer noodzakelijk aan het beginpunt van de film te worden getoond en moest nu vooral de sfeer van het verhaal weerspiegelen. Ook vandaag blijven generieken, hoewel ze steeds vaker uit de montage verdwijnen, een handig middel om verwachtingen te creëren.

Een klare blik in enkele stappen

Filmmakers gebruiken begingenerieken dus om vermoedens op te wekken bij het publiek. Allemaal goed en wel, maar hoe doen ze dit dan precies? Dit vraagstuk werd uitgezocht in de masterthesis van VUB-onderzoeker Florian Stegen via vier filmreeksen over een periode van 61 jaar. Daarin werd gekeken naar Psycho (1960-1990), The Pink Panther (1964-1978), Spider-Man (2002-2007) en James Bond (2006-2021). Elk van deze filmreeksen startte in een andere periode en is bovendien verbonden aan één of meerdere bekende grafische ontwerpers van generieken, zoals de veelgeprezen Saul Bass in het geval van Psycho. Met behulp van een gedetailleerd stappenplan, waarbij elke generiek en de connectie met de bijhorende film(-reeks) op eenzelfde manier werd bestudeerd, werden de “trukken” van Hollywood blootgelegd. Dit gebeurde via een inventaris van alle elementen uit elke begingeneriek, die op filmspecifiek niveau werden bekeken en werden gelinkt aan de verhalen uit de franchises.

Inleiden, verleiden of misleiden?

Dit systematisch onderzoek toonde duidelijk aan dat filmopeningen een zeer belangrijke taak vervullen. Zij zijn bedoeld om de toon te zetten en de kijker onder te dompelen in de fantasiewereld van het witte doek. Toch bestaan er verschillen in hoe deze inwijding precies gebeurd. Uit de bestudeerde films kwamen meerdere, terugkerende methodes naar boven, waarvan de exacte invulling vaker afhankelijk is van de persoon achter de generiek en/of het filmgenre dan van de franchise zelf.

Algemeen keren bij de bekeken films drie verschillende strategieën terug, die een korte, niet altijd even nadrukkelijke inleiding tot het verhaal geven. Filmmakers geven graag een sneak-peak van beelden uit het verhaal. Zonder extra context krijgt de kijker o.a. decors en personages te zien. Verwarring alom bij het publiek, want waar ben je nu precies naar aan het kijken? Wie is bijvoorbeeld die man die aan het begin van vrijwel elke Bondfilm in een witte bol het beeld binnenwandelt? De gekste vragen komen op. Het prikkelt de nieuwsgierigheid en brengt de kijker in het verhaal. De aandacht is officieel getrokken.

Filmmakers maken ook graag gebruik van muziek. Het kan de juiste emoties oproepen, maar kan tegelijk ook een kenmerk voor een filmserie zijn. Het hoeft dan ook niet te verbazen dat muziek een belangrijk onderdeel vormt van de begingeneriek. Opvallend is echter dat de personages vaak zelf geen besef hebben van de muzikale begeleiding. Zij horen de prachtig gecomponeerde stukken niet, omdat die geen deel uitmaken van de wereld waarin de karakters leven en bewegen. De soundtrack heeft dan misschien geen invloed op de personages, maar absoluut wel op het publiek. Films over de webslingeraar Spider-Man starten bijvoorbeeld altijd met dezelfde muziek van Danny Elfman onder de generiek, maar maken handig gebruik van muzikale afwijkingen om een nieuwe schurk te introduceren. De kijker weet dus dat er iets anders zal zijn aan de nieuwe film en kan starten met raden. Ook maken films handig gebruik van de soundtrack om de juiste toon te zetten.

Begingenerieken zijn daarnaast dikwijls een echt kleurboek. Filmmakers willen via verschillende tinten een bepaalde sfeer scheppen. Een donkere kleur zal bijvoorbeeld altijd een zwaarte of tristresse geven aan het beeld. Toch hoeven deze verwijzingen niet altijd symbolisch te zijn, maar kunnen ze ook letterlijk refereren naar personages of objecten. Een verhaal over een roze diamant (aka The Pink Panther)? Dan toch maar gewoon dezelfde kleur gebruiken in de begingeneriek? Veel eenvoudiger hoeft het soms niet te zijn.

Begingenerieken kunnen de kijker inleiden, maar tegelijk ook misleiden. De drie bovenvermelde strategieën worden dan net gebruikt om verkeerde verwachtingen te creëren. De beelden laten dan een ander verhaalverloop vermoeden of de muziek uit de opening wordt later in de film op onverwachte momenten gebruikt, zodat kijkers verkeerde verwachtingen krijgen. De kijker wordt in het ootje genomen, waardoor het verrassingseffect steeds groter wordt.

Lichten uit en… surprise!

Elke filmkijker, zelfs jij, wordt keer op keer op meesterlijke wijze emotioneel bespeeld. Het rechthoekige scherm, de comfortabele zetel met bijhorende snacks en de begingeneriek leiden je Narnia-gewijs naar een nieuwe, onbekende wereld. Dat inleiden gaat soms ook gepaard met misleiden en wordt geëxposeerd als een kunstzinnig schoolvoorbeeld van manipulatie. Dit mollengedrag zorgt voor het verrassingseffect dat filmkijken net zo vermakelijk maakt. Iedereen wordt blij, want jij blijft uitkijken naar elk nieuw verhaal uit een franchise en filmstudio’s zien hun inkomens stijgen. Toch zien we de begingeneriek vaak verdwijnen uit films of wordt de kijker, o.a. via streamingdiensten, verleid om deze introductie door te spoelen. Geen slimme zet, want het belang van deze “mentale” inleiding is niet te onderschatten. Hoog tijd dus dat studio’s en publiek de filmopening redden van een stilzwijgende dood!
