Stemplate behaalt goud - Studenten logopedie ontwikkelen app

‘Ergonomie binnen het onderwijs’, onmiddellijk denkt u aan loodzware boekentassen op de tere rugjes van luidruchtige leerlingen. Het is een interessante en nuttige discussie hoe deze last verminderd kan worden. Juist! Dit artikel handelt niet over de rugzakkenproblematiek, maar wel over dat ander ergonomisch probleem, namelijk stemproblemen bij de leerkrachten van deze rumoerige leerlingen. Vele uren spreken zij vol overgave voor groepen van verschillende groottes, leerlingen met verschillende karakters en in al dan niet goed verluchte lokalen. Jente en Barbara schreven er hun thesis over en wonnen er zelfs een prijs mee.

Stemproblemen bij leraren

Stemproblemen komen bij 5 tot 80% van de leraren voor, afhankelijk van het type onderwijs waarin de leraar lesgeeft. Stemproblemen kennen we onder andere als heesheid of het verlies van de stem. Het risico op stemproblemen bij leraren verminderen moet een streefdoel worden. De stem is het instrument  bij uitstek voor een leraar om te informeren, te overtuigen en te inspireren. De lerarenopleiding is de ideale setting en timing voor begeleiding en stemvorming. Deze begeleiding is nog niet altijd op een kwalitatieve manier mogelijk door een gebrek aan tijd, mankracht en middelen. Een leraar leert in de opleiding wel op welke manier hij moet lesgeven en een boodschap overbrengen, maar niet hoe hij zijn eigen instrument, de stem, correct kan gebruiken om die boodschap over te brengen.

Logopedie en appontwikkeling

De app Stemplate werd ontwikkeld door Barbara Dewit en Jente Verbesselt, twee masterstudenten Logopedische wetenschappen. Deze app was het praktische luik van hun thesis aan de KU Leuven onder vakkundige begeleiding van promotor prof. Decoster. Met de thesis wonnen de studenten de Outstanding Masterthesis Award. Stemplate komt tegemoet aan de nood tot risicobepaling en advisering over stem. De ontwikkeling gebeurde met PhoneGap, een hybrid implementatieplatform. De masterstudenten onderzochten mogelijke ontwikkelingsmodellen en richtlijnen in verband met app-ontwikkeling. Het gevolgde ontwikkelingsmodel is een combinatie van het Waterfall en Agile model.

De inhoudelijke opbouw van Stemplate volgt het stemergonomisch model. Ergonomie, en meer bepaald stemergonomie, gaat om de interactie tussen een individu en zijn omgeving. Het is een interactief systeem. Verschillende facetten van de stem en de omgeving zijn bepalend om aan stemergonomie te doen. Het model leidt tot een verandering in gedrag of denken en zorgt ook voor het behouden van die verandering op lange termijn.

Een naam voor de app

De naam van de app moet de functie weerspiegelen. Stemplate werd gekozen omdat een template verwijst naar een vast sjabloon voor een stuk code. Met behulp van een template is het mogelijk een stuk broncode te creëren zodat het voor meerdere types bruikbaar is, zoals in de app werd toegepast. Template wordt samengevoegd met stem, zowel inhoudelijk als in de naam van de app. Gebruikers ontvangen na het doorlopen van de app een soort template van hun stem.

De app bevat informatie over stemergonomisch handelen. Deze informatie is onontbeerlijk om nadien het gegeven advies ten volle te kunnen benutten. Na het doorlopen van een vragenlijst over stem en stemrisico’s volgt gespecificeerd advies rond stemergonomisch handelen. Het duurt gemiddeld vijf tot tien minuten om de vragenlijst te doorlopen. Stemplate bevraagt gezondheidsfactoren, stemervaringen en gewoontes die een invloed hebben op de stem. De advisering bestaat enerzijds uit concrete informatie in de vorm van een spiderdiagram. De gebruiker kan op die manier zien op welke aspecten hij/zij goed scoort of wat beter kan. Anderzijds volgen enkele adviezen in vraagvorm, deze zijn gebaseerd op de domeinen waarop de gebruiker zwakker scoort.

Stemplate komt tegemoet aan nood tot stemvorming

De app werd door 72 eerstejaarsstudenten aan de lerarenopleiding kleuteronderwijs van de University College Leuven-Limburg (UCLL) uitgetest. Welke stemervaringen hebben deze studenten voor en na een eerste stageperiode? Uit de resultaten blijkt dat studenten weinig ervaring hebben met stemergonomische maatregelen. Tijdens de opleiding heeft 10 tot 20% van de studenten al stemklachten of stemproblemen ervaren. Meer dan de helft kreeg hiervoor geen hulp. Studenten beschrijven invloeden op de stem vaker in termen van persoonlijke dan in termen van omgevingsfactoren.

Welk verschil in stemergonomisch handelen in verschillende situaties is merkbaar tussen studenten die de app enkel na de stageperiode doorlopen en de groep die Stemplate zowel voor als na de stageperiode doorloopt? Het louter invullen van de vragenlijst heeft geen effect op het stemergonomisch handelen. Door de beperkte ontwikkelingstijd was een testing van het effect van het advies op de stem niet mogelijk.

Vinden de studenten Stemplate inhoudelijk en structureel goed ontwikkeld? De grote meerderheid van de studenten vindt de app gebruiksvriendelijk en voldoende interactief. Meer dan 80% vindt Stemplate aantrekkelijk vormgegeven en de meerderheid vindt de app volledig. Stemplate sluit voor bijna alle studenten aan bij de leef- en studiewereld. De app krijgt gemiddeld 3,5 van de 5 sterren.

Stemplate bevordert het vergroten van bewustzijn, kennis, inzicht en vaardigheden met betrekking tot stem bij studenten aan de lerarenopleiding. De app zet aan tot handelen. Stemplate vormt een eerste stap in de tegemoetkoming aan de nood van kennis en inzicht over stem, stemrisico’s en stemergonomisch handelen, zowel in de lerarenopleiding als bij leraren in het algemeen.

Een app met toekomst

De app is op dit moment bruikbaar, al kan hij nog verbeterd en uitgebreid worden. Gamification kan nog toegevoegd worden. Gamification verwijst naar de implementatie van spelelementen in een app. Om de aantrekkelijkheid en duurzaamheid te vergroten zijn een link met sociale media en leerplatforms en de toevoeging van oefenelementen en reminders een meerwaarde. De app is momenteel nog niet vrij downloadbaar.

Stemplate kan dienen als tool en leidraad bij de stemvorming. Verder onderzoek kan uitwijzen welke effecten het opvolgen van de adviezen, al dan niet met begeleiding vanuit de opleiding, heeft. Vervolgonderzoek bij beroepssprekers in het algemeen kan de doelgroep van de app vergroten (advocaten, sportbegeleiders ...). Tot slot kan de app ook een aanvulling zijn bij logopedische diagnostiek en therapie.

Bij het huidige doelpubliek valt Stemplate alvast in de smaak. Uit de reacties blijkt duidelijk dat de leraren van de toekomst iets hebben bijgeleerd. Het meest voorkomende antwoord op de vraag wat de app heeft bijgebracht is: ‘dat ik mijn stem bewust goed kan gebruiken en verzorgen’.
