Een grondige statistische studie van het Belgische kustklimaat

Wordt de Belgische kust het nieuwe Aruba?

Een staalblauwe hemel overdekt de palmbomen op het strand. Zwetende lijven bakken in de stralende zon. Het briesje is verfrissend, maar kan de weinige witte wolkjes niet verplaatsen. Het klinkt als een droomvakantie in de Caraïben. Maar de aarde warmt op. Krijgen we in de toekomst ook bij ons tropische taferelen? Hoe verandert de temperatuur, de wind, de neerslag? En wat betekent dat voor ons?

Het klimaat verandert, en de mens is daarvoor verantwoordelijk, op zijn minst gedeeltelijk. Daarover zijn wetenschappers het eens, ook al weigeren sommige wereldleiders nog steeds het te geloven. Vooral op de Noordpool wordt het warmer, maar het kwik stijgt op bijna alle plaatsen op aarde. Ook aan de Belgische kust?

2 °C per eeuw warmer
Dat onderzocht Elke Debrie voor haar masterthesis in de wiskunde. Geadviseerd door een meteoroloog en een statistica, ging ze op zoek naar patronen in het Belgische kustweer. Ze analyseerde de gegevens van de weerstations op de luchtmachtbasis in Koksijde en op de luchthaven in Oostende, van de jaren 1950 tot nu. Die waren nog nooit grondig geanalyseerd, in tegenstelling tot de gegevens van het KMI in Ukkel en Zaventem. Wat bleek?

Aan de Belgische kust wordt het inderdaad serieus warmer. De gemiddelde temperaturen stijgen aan een tempo van meer dan 2 °C per eeuw! Die opwarming is merkbaar in elk seizoen: de zomers zijn heter geworden en de winters milder. De statistiek is glashelder: dit is een echte trend, geen toevallige schommeling.

Zieke muggen
Dat lijkt misschien fijn nieuws voor strandtoeristen, maar de opwarming van onze kuststreek kan ook gevaarlijke gevolgen hebben. Een markant voorbeeld is dat van de tijgermug. Doorheen de evolutie hebben dieren- en plantensoorten zich aangepast aan het klimaat waarin ze leven. Als de weersomstandigheden veranderen, zal ook het verspreidingsgebied van soorten zich verplaatsen: waar een diertje zich beter thuisvoelt, zal het zich sneller voortplanten. Britse onderzoekers ontdekten al dat de Aziatische tijgermug op komst is naar onze streken. Die mug draagt soms virussen die infectieziekten veroorzaken, zoals gele koorts, dengue en zikakoorts. Daar waar vooral Zuid-Europa enkele decennia geleden een goed klimaat bood voor de Aziatische tijgermug, beschikken nu meer noordelijk gelegen regio’s zoals België over de ideale omstandigheden.

Nu we inzicht krijgen in de veranderingen van het Belgische kustklimaat, zou het interessant zijn om te onderzoeken welke trekvogels er zouden verdwijnen uit het Zwin. Of om te bestuderen hoe de flora in de IJzermonding zich zal ontwikkelen – misschien groeien er binnen honderd jaar toch palmbomen in de Nieuwpoortse duinen?

Windmolens op rand van de afgrond
Ook de wind aan de Belgische kust vertoont een tendens. Sinds het begin van de metingen is er gemiddeld genomen een daling van de windsnelheid. Vooral de metingen in Oostende tonen een uitgesproken tendens: de windsnelheid is er gemiddeld 5 meter per seconde, maar verandert aan een vaart van gemiddeld -1,2 m/s per eeuw. Het aantal dagen per jaar met krachtige wind neemt in beide kuststeden een duik. Het aantal dagen met zwakke tot matige wind neemt vooral in Oostende markant toe. Deze trend van verzwakkende wind wordt ook op andere plaatsen in de wereld opgemerkt.

Minder goed nieuws dus voor de bouwers van windmolenparken in de Noordzee. Laten we er even van uitgaan dat de windafname die we de laatste vijftig jaar op de Oostendse luchthaven waarnamen, zich de volgende vijftig jaar op dezelfde manier zou verderzetten in de Noordzee. Dan zouden de windmolens van Belwind en C-Power in 2067 een derde minder energie opwekken dan in 2017. Het verschil is groot, omdat al een klein verschil in windpatroon (-12 %) grote gevolgen kan hebben voor de hoeveelheid opgewekte elektriciteit (-32 %). Dat is jammer, want wind is misschien wel de meest duurzame en veelbelovende energiebron. Gelukkig ontwikkelen ingenieurs steeds slimmere en meer efficiënte windturbines – zo dragen ze bij aan de strijd tegen de opwarming van de aarde. De cirkel is rond.

Vuile lucht
Een afname in wind heeft nog een ander kwalijk gevolg: minder luchtcirculatie. Vooral in verstedelijkte gebieden, zoals Vlaanderen, blijft de luchtvervuiling dan hardnekkiger hangen. Met alle gevolgen van dien voor de volksgezondheid!

Een Belgische kust met tijgermuggen, vervuilde lucht en windmolens die zelden op volle kracht draaien, dat doembeeld is nog niet voor morgen. Maar de veranderingen in het weer zijn duidelijk ingezet. Laten we vooral zelf ons steentje bijdragen aan minder CO2-uitstoot, zodat we die dreigende klimaatverandering een halt kunnen toeroepen!
