In a highly unequal society, many young Brazilians suffer oppression based on their class, race, gender, sexual orientation and religion. In the transition to adulthood, a period that is already marked by important changes, this brings along specific needs that need to be met. This research answers how ICBIE, a cultural centre in Salvador da Bahia, tries to meet those needs by providing a
space for young people to participate in activities and volunteer. Young adults from the region and volunteers of ICBIE have participated in a survey and in-depth interviews to find the answer to the central question of this thesis:
“How does volunteering at ICBIE contribute to the personal and professional development of young adults living on the Itapagipe Peninsula of Salvador, Bahia?”. Their answers, insights and stories were complemented by observations and were compared with, and analyzed through the lens of
national data and concepts from Robert Havighurst, Social Justice Theory and Anti-Oppressive Practises. The results show that young adults face a multitude of obstacles, mostly related to oppressive practises. Classism is the form of
oppression that stood out, connecting almost all of the respondents. And while ICBIE can’t directly change the root of these oppressive practises, it mitigates the harmful effects caused by them, by creating a place where volunteers can
learn, take up responsibility, open their view on the world, create meaningful bonds, feel safe and loved, and cultivate hope and resilience for the future.

Once the boundaries between immanent existence and transcendence have been drawn, a typically modern undertaking, all we are left with is the sensible, whereas the supersensible becomes synonymous with the illusionary. This predicament does not have to be inherently problematic, at least from a religious point of view. For philosophy, however, it has often been understood in terms of a disaster, addressed with the ambiguous notion of nihilism. This is particularly true of post-Nietzschean philosophy, in which a holistic understanding of the notion of nihilism is often adopted to argue for the impossibility of both philosophy and transcendence. In this master’s thesis I investigate the relationship between nihilism, philosophy and transcendence as it came about in the philosophy of Karl Jaspers (1883–1969). This 20th century German thinker took great interest in the concern of the captivity of the immanence of thought and formulated creative answers to the question of transcendence after the alleged death of God. For Jaspers, the problem of nihilism was perennial to philosophy, and in the course of his life he devoted many pages to an attempt of overcoming it.
First, this thesis analyses the problem of nihilism on its own, in its pre-Nietzschean and Nietzschean manifestations, to come to terms with its alleged threat to philosophy. With regard to the vastness and richness of the notion, some topics are inevitably left out, such as the religious nihilism of Walter Benjamin and Gershom Scholem, or the extensive elaborations on nihilism in contemporary continental philosophy, for example on the divergence between the interpretations of Martin Heidegger and Emanuele Severino. Second, we turn to Jaspers’ own understanding of nihilism. Jaspers defined the nature and value of philosophy through its confrontation with nihilism, which, for him, represented a kind of anti-philosophy. Philosophy had to go through nihilism to become true philosophizing. Jaspers proposed an ingenious argument that separates nihilism from philosophy, existence from immanence and truth from knowledge. To make this case, we primarily turn to Jaspers’ Von der Wahrheit, Der philosophische Glaube and his books on Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy. In Nietzsche und das Christentum, for example, Jaspers argued that Nietzsche at times separated the figure of Jesus from Christianity. In this separation, Jaspers argued, a possible way of overcoming Nietzsche’s nihilism in a philosophy that originates in love was already made possible by the fundamental distinctions of Nietzsche’s own critique of Christianity, for example his dismissal of all contradictions.

Deze thesis biedt een meer genuanceerde blik op arbeidsmigratie in China, door te vertrekken vanuit individuele en online gepubliceerde verhalen. Het idee dat arbeidsmigratie zou kunnen leiden tot persoonlijke transformatie wordt in vraag gesteld, en er wordt gekeken naar de effecten van migratie en discriminatie op identiteitsvorming.

Een mixed methods onderzoek, bestaande uit een online survey en diepte-interviews, dat een eerste blik werpt op de sportervaringen van transgender personen in Vlaanderen.

De thesis beschrijft de toepassing van een vernieuwde, verbeterde test voor de detectie van opioïden op authentieke bloedstalen en vergelijkt de resultaten met eerder ontwikkelde test. Daarnaast beschrijft de scriptie ook een studie naar biased signaling ter hoogte van opioïd receptoren.

Deze masterproef gaat over de representatie van lesbiennes in Vlaamse fictiereeksen, uitgezonden tussen 2005 en 2019. Er werden vier reeksen geselecteerd, namelijk: Kinderen van Dewindt, Marsman, Gent-West en Professor T. Deze reeksen werden onderworpen aan een narratieve inhoudsanalyse, waarbij de focus lag op de lesbische personages. Daarnaast werden ook de actrices in kwestie geïnterviewd ter nuancering.

Meer en meer kinderen en adolescenten met genderdysforie raadplegen professionele hulpverlening voor psychologische en medicamenteuze opvolging. Deze therapieën worden aangewend om het lijden te verzachten en de transitie naar het andere geslacht te vergemakkelijken. Maar, weinig is bekend over de effecten van deze medicamenteuze behandelingen op de emotionele beleving en het zelf-beeld van de patiënten. Deze scriptie heeft als doel verschillende aspecten van emotioneel functioneren en zelfbeeld te evalueren bij kinderen en jongeren met genderdysforie na opeenvolgende fases in de transitie. De ultieme doelstelling van deze studie bestaat erin te komen tot een optimale ondersteuning van kinderen en jongeren met genderdysforie in hun transitie.

Studie van het concept Cinematic Universe aan de hand van drie kernthema's: intertekstualiteit, transmedia storytelling en brand-building.

Kan schaamte als machtsmiddel gebruikt worden? Speelt zij een rol in het categoriseren van mensen met een fysieke, cognitieve of psychologische kwetsbaarheid? In onze Westerse maatschappij zijn onafhankelijkheid en onkwetsbaarheid 'normaal', een beperking leidt dan weer al te vaak tot schaamte. Schaamte speelt zelfs een rol in het omvormen van beperking tot stoornis. Het laatste hoofdstuk van deze thesis gaat op zoek naar plaatsen waar schaamte overwonnen wordt.

Energy leakage is nowadays becoming a fundamental problem in the chip’s energy household. Reducing the energy leakage is especially important for chips targeted for low power applications such as future 'internet of everything'- devices. In this thesis we propose a solution on transistor level for the energy leakage in chips.

The Cofán people of Zábalo, a community in the Ecuadorian Amazon, have always engaged pragmatically on an everyday basis with their forest-based lifestyle and relations with the government, corporations and outsiders (fuesu a’i). However, in recent years the community has been dealing with growing uncertainty, internal economic inequality, high unemployment, and an Ecuadorian state that extends governmental control, while also neglecting the needs of people in this region. A myriad of factors discussed in this paper, including the increased integration of outside commodities into the Cofáns’ daily life, have led me to believe that unless the Cofán gain access to a steady source of financial income to purchase basic supplies and commodities (such as bullets, gasoline and salt), many people will have to look for work outside the community or allow oil companies to exploit their resources. The growing accumulation of wealth by just two families in the community, increasing dependence on money, lack of access to jobs, and internal political divisions have increased distrust and bad talk (ega afa’cho). Through a two-month stay with the community, where I interviewed 25 individuals (collecting 67 hours of semi-structured interviews) and produced 7 short films , I mainly sought to answer the following three questions: What political and economic changes have these people encountered in recent years? What is the community’s relationship with money, commodities and other sources of value? Can the Cofán maintain an ideal tranquil (opatssi) life and take care of the forest (tsampima coiraye), while simultaneously engaging with external influences, including restrictive laws, expansion of the capitalist frontier, commodities, the Socio Bosque environmental conservation government scheme, populist local politicians, and the potential of oil exploitation?

I conclude that Zábalo is currently a frontier of ‘negligent hegemonic control’ and is becoming more assimilated into the global economic market, creating a greater dependence on money and commodities, which is both changing people’s relationship to the concepts of opatssi and tsampima coiraye and also making them more likely find a pragmatic solution to their economic problems, such as allowing oil exploitation. Finally, this paper advocates for an engaged, activist anthropology in the context of a neoliberal world with increasing inequality, marginalized indigenous peoples, and increasing environmental degradation.

Deze masterproef gaat na of het mogelijk is om zinkvonken (EDM) toe te passen op koolstofcomposiet (CFRP). Er is over dit onderwerp weinig literatuur beschikbaar. Daarom wordt gestart met enkele experimenten. Deze tonen aan dat industrieel CFRP (???? = 0,01Ωcm) bewerkbaar is met vonkerosie. Een ruimer opgezet experimenteel onderzoek, bestudeert in tweede instantie de optredende materiaalafnamemechanismen en de invloed van het vonkproces op het materiaal. De volgende experimentele randvoorwaarden zijn daarbij van toepassing: een koperelektrode (Ø = 10mm) met negatieve polarisatie die 1mm diep vonkt. Een parameterbereik met stroom van 1 tot 65A en pulsduur van 0,8 tot 200µs. Verder wordt een machinefunctionaliteit gebruikt waardoor overige parameters automatisch optimaal worden geregeld. Het resultaat wordt onderzocht via een spaananalyse en microscopie, en SEM en EDX analyses toegepast op bewerkte doorsneden en oppervlakken. Dit laat toe om vier mogelijke optredende materiaalafnamemechanismen te verklaren. De verschillende experimenten resulteren ook in twee optimale vonktechnologieën. Met een statistische analyse wordt de relatie tussen de procesparameters en een aantal uitgangsgrootheden (MRR, Ra en randkwaliteit) onderzocht. De studie wordt afgerond met het onderzoeken van het effect van polarisatie; de invloed van een grafietelektrode; en een analyse van stroom en spanningspulsen via pulsmonitoring.

Opmerkingen zoals hierboven, maar ook de nog sterk aanwezige ‘heteronorm’ (handelen vanuit het idee dat iedereen hetero is) hebben vaak een grotere impact dan men denkt.

Beseffen we het wel nog wanneer we nieuwsfeiten lezen? Of botsen we met zijn allen steeds vaker toevallig op nieuwscontent? Wat zeker is, is dat de wereld de voorbije jaren steeds mobieler wordt. Smartphones en tablets zijn alomtegenwoordig. Ook de nieuwswereld gaat niet voorbij aan deze trend naar meer mobiliteit.

De kip en de zebra: zoek het verschilDe Belgische hedendaagse geëngageerde kunstenaar Koen Vanmechelen omschrijft zijn Cosmopolitan Chicken Project als een metafoor voor onze samenleving. Het kruisen van nationale raskippen tot een kosmopolitische kip zou iets over onze maatschappij vertellen. In artikels verbindt men zijn werk telkens met zwaar beladen maatschappelijke onderwerpen, zoals de multiculturele samenleving, zonder dit echter grondig uit te diepen. Nieuwsgierigheid was dan ook de start van mijn onderzoek. Interviews met Vanmechelen vormde mijn vertrekpunt.

In de schaduw van de wereldbeker is Zuid-Afrika een land van hoop en wanhoop, van overweldigende rijkdom en wrede taferelen van gangs en drugs. Ondanks zijn classificatie als een land met een modaal inkomen, wordt het gekenmerkt door wijdverspreide armoede, ziekte en patronen van raciale en geografische ongelijkheid (Blaauw & Gilson, 2001). Hierbij denken we aan de grote aantallen die vandaag nog in townships of sloppenwijken wonen. Dit heeft diepgaande gevolgen, niet in het minst op  het  onderwijs.

De 44ste Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen (2008) waren in alle opzichten memorabel. Amerika stond aan de rand van een nieuw tijdperk: wat zou het worden, een zwarte of een vrouwelijke president? Op 20 januari 2009 was het dan zover: de eerste zwarte president van Amerika legde de eed af. Maar wat ging er aan die historische overwinning vooraf? Obama's overwinning leek te danken aan een goed uitgekiende politieke campagne, gecentraliseerd rond één woord 'change' en één ijzersterke slogan 'Yes we can'.
