Is it possible to predict the area-level prevalence of COVID-19 infections in Belgium by
analyzing self-reported symptoms on Twitter? This research project is about generating
estimates of the incidence of COVID-19 infections, at the municipality level, by using
Multilevel Regression Post-Stratification (MrP) to account for sampling biases in the social
media sample. At first, tweets are obtained from users based on keywords derived from
previous research, e.g., tweets mentioning fever, cough, loss of taste, fatigue, etc. Then, key
demographic and geographical features of interest are extracted using the M3 deep learning
pipeline, as well as simple self-reported characteristics, effectively transforming the
unstructured twitter sample into a survey-like object. Finally, based on these demographic
features and census characteristics, a mixed effects logistic regression model with
post-stratification according to the Belgian census is proposed to forecast the number of
infected individuals on a particular day. This study intends to contribute to the proof of
concept of a complete end to end pipeline to perform real time predictions of disease
prevalence at a granular level in a population using social media data.

This is making the companies adapt through the search for new solutions to become as efficient as possible. In particular, e-commerce is becoming more relevant in the business world, which has a prominent role in influencing customers’ behavior.

This thesis focused on the employees with burnout history in Belgium to investigate their experiences of returning to work after burnout and to examine how mindfulness practices can support them during the reintegration period.

Deze masterproef onderzoekt en vergelijkt de taalmotivatie van Vlaamse en Waalse jongeren in de laatste graad secundair onderwijs. Wat is het motivatieprofiel van de Belgische leerling? Zijn er verschillen in de taalmotivatie
van Vlaamse en Waalse leerlingen? Zijn er verschillen tussen jongens en meisjes? Heeft CLIL een
effect op de taalmotivatie van Belgische leerlingen? Deze onderzoeksvragen komen uitgebreid aan bod in deze masterthesis.

Malaria is één van de vier dodelijkste infectieziekten en wordt overgebracht door de vrouwelijke Anopheles mug. Deze aandoening wordt veroorzaakt door parasieten van het Plasmodium genus. De levenscyclus begint met de aanwezigheid van sporozoïeten (SPZn) in de bloedbaan van de menselijke
gastheer als gevolg van een beet van een geïnfecteerde mug. Deze SPZn kunnen vervolgens de levercellen bereiken en deze binnendringen met behulp van de interactie tussen hun belangrijkste oppervlakte-eiwit, het circumsporozoïet proteïne (CSP), en hoog-gesulfateerde heparaansulfaatgroepen op de levercellen. Eenmaal in de levercel, wordt verondersteld dat CSP in het cytoplasma terechtkomt en het transport van de transcriptiefactoren naar de celkern verhindert. Op deze manier zou het immuunsysteem van de levercel mogelijk onderdrukt worden en de overleving van de parasiet bevorderd
worden. Pas wanneer de parasiet de bloedfase bereikt, is er sprake van ziekteverschijnselen zoals de kenmerkende koortsaanvallen. Het is van belang dat malaria goed en op tijd wordt behandeld om verdere complicaties te voorkomen. Als behandeling kan er gebruik gemaakt worden van chloroquine- en artemisine-gebaseerde therapieën. De stijgende resistentie tegen deze behandelingen is echter een stimulans voor het vinden van nieuwe middelen. Het doel van deze thesis was om te onderzoeken of er een interactie plaatsvindt tussen de importine-α eiwitten en het CSP van zowel P. falciparum als P. berghei. Om dit te bereiken werden PfaCSPFL en PbeCSPFL recombinant geproduceerd in E. coli en opgezuiverd via chromatografische methoden. Voor
het verkrijgen van de importine-α eiwitten van zowel menselijke als murine oorsprong, werden respectievelijk HepG2 en Hepa1-6 cellen gecultiveerd. Tenslotte werden pull-down assays uitgevoerd om de mogelijke interactie tussen CSP en importine-α eiwitten te onderzoeken.

Een kwalitatieve studie in het domein van de cognitieve narratologie die onderzoekt of het concept van Storyworld Possible Selves (Martínez, 2014; 2018) een verklaring kan bieden voor literaire immersie. Dat gebeurt via een case study van de Engelstalige roman "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" van Jeff Lindsay.

Dat ons leven niet altijd even gezond is, is duidelijk. Maar hoe ga je om met de gevaren die verbonden zijn aan een ongezonde levensstijl? En hoe kies je bewust voor een gezond alternatief? Possible onderzocht met een acht weken programma welke invloed een gezonde levensstijl op ons lichaam heeft.

Once the boundaries between immanent existence and transcendence have been drawn, a typically modern undertaking, all we are left with is the sensible, whereas the supersensible becomes synonymous with the illusionary. This predicament does not have to be inherently problematic, at least from a religious point of view. For philosophy, however, it has often been understood in terms of a disaster, addressed with the ambiguous notion of nihilism. This is particularly true of post-Nietzschean philosophy, in which a holistic understanding of the notion of nihilism is often adopted to argue for the impossibility of both philosophy and transcendence. In this master’s thesis I investigate the relationship between nihilism, philosophy and transcendence as it came about in the philosophy of Karl Jaspers (1883–1969). This 20th century German thinker took great interest in the concern of the captivity of the immanence of thought and formulated creative answers to the question of transcendence after the alleged death of God. For Jaspers, the problem of nihilism was perennial to philosophy, and in the course of his life he devoted many pages to an attempt of overcoming it.
First, this thesis analyses the problem of nihilism on its own, in its pre-Nietzschean and Nietzschean manifestations, to come to terms with its alleged threat to philosophy. With regard to the vastness and richness of the notion, some topics are inevitably left out, such as the religious nihilism of Walter Benjamin and Gershom Scholem, or the extensive elaborations on nihilism in contemporary continental philosophy, for example on the divergence between the interpretations of Martin Heidegger and Emanuele Severino. Second, we turn to Jaspers’ own understanding of nihilism. Jaspers defined the nature and value of philosophy through its confrontation with nihilism, which, for him, represented a kind of anti-philosophy. Philosophy had to go through nihilism to become true philosophizing. Jaspers proposed an ingenious argument that separates nihilism from philosophy, existence from immanence and truth from knowledge. To make this case, we primarily turn to Jaspers’ Von der Wahrheit, Der philosophische Glaube and his books on Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy. In Nietzsche und das Christentum, for example, Jaspers argued that Nietzsche at times separated the figure of Jesus from Christianity. In this separation, Jaspers argued, a possible way of overcoming Nietzsche’s nihilism in a philosophy that originates in love was already made possible by the fundamental distinctions of Nietzsche’s own critique of Christianity, for example his dismissal of all contradictions.

This research set out to systematically and empirically assess the harms of contemporary Nigerian-based piracy across multiple bearers and interest dimensions. To do so, an innovative harm assessment framework, developed by Greenfield and Paoli (2013) was employed. The assessment framework, a multi-step exercise comprised of distinct analytical phases and processes, required the articulation of business models for each of the primary modes of Nigerian-based piracy, the identification of possible harms and bearers, the evaluation of the incidence and severity of actual harms, the rating and prioritization of harms and finally, investigating potential causes of the identified harms. To do so, a mixed-methods approach was employed relying on both primary and secondary data sources. Methods included an extensive literature review, content analysis of over 400 piracy incident reports and semi-structured interviews.

We worden overspoeld met sequels uit Hollywood. Sequels van Vlaamse bodem lijken echter doorgaans achterwege te blijven. Daarom werden sequels als vorm van film maken, de trend die zich binnen Vlaanderen afspeelt en daar de mogelijke oorzaken van nagegaan en onderzocht. Dit aan de hand van (academische) literatuur en diepte-interviews met twaalf experten binnen de (Vlaamse) filmindustrie, waaronder Jan Verheyen, Bilall Fallah, Erwin Provoost, Peter Bouckaert, Hilde Van Mieghem, Luk Wyns en Ward Verrijcken.

Deze masterproef gaat na of job crafting stimuleerbaar is via een micro-interventie. Daarnaast bekijken we het effect van job crafting op de werk-privé combinaties. Hiervoor maken we gebruik van een experimenteel design.

Studie van het concept Cinematic Universe aan de hand van drie kernthema's: intertekstualiteit, transmedia storytelling en brand-building.

Dit onderzoek brengt de factoren in kaart waarmee mensen met een beperkte arm-handfunctie rekening houden bij de adoptie van smartphones en hun apps, aan de hand van het UTAUT2 model.

De analyse toont aan dat het geen onhaalbare kaart is om tegelijkertijd de administratieve overlast aan te pakken die de sociale documenten veroorzaken voor ondernemingen, en tevens tegemoet te komen aan de cruciale informatiebehoeften van de overheid en van de werknemers.

De scriptie tracht Ronald Reagan en Donald Trump te vergelijken als historische figuren en, rekening houdend met de sociologische en historische factoren, een taalkundige vergelijking te maken van enkele speeches van de beide presidenten.

This master thesis aims to acquire more understanding in the advantages of bus lanes. The paper is subdivided into two main parts. The first part of the research is a literature study, where one will investigate very briefly the evolution of traffic and the use of public transport. This will be followed by a closer look into the phenomenon of bus lanes. Here one will summarize the different types of bus lanes and their possible advantages in certain situations. The first part will be closed with the information one gained during the literature study concerning the methods of measurements to mathematize and visualize the possible relevant advantages. There are two common ways in capturing the details of the underlying system, the first one is a method based on simulation (microscopic-cellular automata). The second one is based on an analytical approach (the queuing theory).
In the second part one will couple the gained knowledge regarding the literature study with a case study in Ghent. For this research one has chosen the Rooigemlaan, in particular the area of the intersection between the Rooigemlaan and the Drongensesteenweg in Ghent. The goal of this case study will be to scale the advantages of an ordinary lane, a dedicated bus lane with and without set back and a lane with intermitted priority for buses. These advantages will be linked with the advantages offered by the use of transit signal priority. To end this thesis one will evaluate the previous described bus lane types and their influences on traffic, this will be done by sensitivity analysis where one will change the input values. To finalize the research, a conclusion will be formed based on a cost-benefit analysis.

Deze scriptie is een onderzoek naar het filosofisch raamwerk waarbinnen de poëzie van Jim Morrison, meest bekend als de zanger van de rockgroep The Doors, vorm hebben gekregen. Deze scriptie is bovendien een kleine aanzet tot een grotere interesse en waardering van deze, vooralsnog onbekende, poëzie.

Wat is precariteit en wat voor effect heeft het op de muziekindustrie? Aan de hand van een kwalitatieve analyse van zeven ondervraagde muzikanten wordt er gezocht naar problemen en mogelijke oplossingen met betrekking tot precariteit. De conclusie is dat het nog niet te laat is om de belangen van de muzikant te verdedigen en de precariteit weg te werken.

Onderzoek naar het effect van literatuur op het empathisch vermogen. Met een nadruk op transportatie en verhaalwerelden of "possible worlds".

Tijdens deze scriptie werd een procedure ontwikkeld om snel en eenvoudig proteïnen met lineaire herhalingen te verlengen of verkorten. Deze procedure laat toe om meerdere energetisch geoptimaliseerde sequenties te bekomen.

Iedereen zucht wel eens. Voor de meeste mensen is dit zo een normaal deel van de ademhaling dat er niet over nagedacht wordt. We weten al dat zuchten een resetter functie heeft voor de ademhaling. Maar toch gaan mensen soms op vreemde momenten zuchten. Kan men leren zuchten?

Deze masterproef gaat na of het mogelijk is om zinkvonken (EDM) toe te passen op koolstofcomposiet (CFRP). Er is over dit onderwerp weinig literatuur beschikbaar. Daarom wordt gestart met enkele experimenten. Deze tonen aan dat industrieel CFRP (???? = 0,01Ωcm) bewerkbaar is met vonkerosie. Een ruimer opgezet experimenteel onderzoek, bestudeert in tweede instantie de optredende materiaalafnamemechanismen en de invloed van het vonkproces op het materiaal. De volgende experimentele randvoorwaarden zijn daarbij van toepassing: een koperelektrode (Ø = 10mm) met negatieve polarisatie die 1mm diep vonkt. Een parameterbereik met stroom van 1 tot 65A en pulsduur van 0,8 tot 200µs. Verder wordt een machinefunctionaliteit gebruikt waardoor overige parameters automatisch optimaal worden geregeld. Het resultaat wordt onderzocht via een spaananalyse en microscopie, en SEM en EDX analyses toegepast op bewerkte doorsneden en oppervlakken. Dit laat toe om vier mogelijke optredende materiaalafnamemechanismen te verklaren. De verschillende experimenten resulteren ook in twee optimale vonktechnologieën. Met een statistische analyse wordt de relatie tussen de procesparameters en een aantal uitgangsgrootheden (MRR, Ra en randkwaliteit) onderzocht. De studie wordt afgerond met het onderzoeken van het effect van polarisatie; de invloed van een grafietelektrode; en een analyse van stroom en spanningspulsen via pulsmonitoring.

Deze masterproef exploreert de toegankelijkheid van de tandarts voor OCMW-cliënten. Dit omvat zowel personen met een laag inkomen, als asielzoekers en personen zonder wettig verblijf. De werking van het OCMW en de drempels ervaren door zowel de OCMW-cliënt als tandarts werden nagegaan. Verder werd voor deze kwetsbare doelgroep de toegankelijkheid van de gezondheidszorg voor arts en tandarts vergeleken.

Flow-based market coupling, the cheapest path to security of supplyCurrently a lot of European countries struggle with the Security of Supply of electricity. Belgium is one of the leading problem cases. In order to achieve long-term security of supply, Europe puts its stake on increasing the interconnection capacity between member states (1). This option is expensive but can be viable. For short-term problems, like shortages in Belgium, the investment plan offers no solution. In research a lot attention is given to complex and challenging solutions like demand side management.

Which countries are more likely to initiate a dispute in the  WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism?This Dissertation is focused on dispute initiation in the WTO Dispute Settlement system. The main question the author attempts to at least partially answer is: Why do countries initiate a dispute in the WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism? The answer to this question is important for international trade and the enforcement of international trade laws. These laws are more often than not drafted in an extremely vague manner in order to be politically acceptable.
