The question of what constitutes truth today is in debate. In particular, young people seem to have difficulties in verifying the information they encounter online. The digitization means an increasing prevalence of fake news on digital media platforms. This becomes a problem because research has shown that young people mainly consume news that they find online. Fake news raises questions concerning the extent to what young adults trust news online. With this in mind, this master’s thesis focuses on: ’What role do fake news production and dissemination have on trust in news on digital media platforms among Flemish young adults?’

In the literature review, the context is given in which fake news could occur. Understanding this media phenomenon has become more important because denoting everything as fake news can cause potential implications such as damage to the reputation of people, obscuring public debate, or influencing political decisions.

For this master’s thesis, an online quantitative survey was conducted. The attitude of 279 respondents aged between 18-34 in Flanders was measured by a multiple regression analysis. The results show that age and social media contacts play a significant role in the trust of young adults in online news.

Furthermore, the study finds significant correlations between social media features and trust in online news as well as between trust and the extent they interact with online news.

Concreet werd er bestudeerd hoe deze actoren het huidig digitaal leeraanbod in de gevangenissen ervaren, welke meerwaarde een digitaal leer- aanbod met zich meebrengt en hoe zo’n leeraanbod ideaal ingevuld wordt.

Chinese outward FDI increased sharply over the last decades, subjecting them to considerable
public debate. Yet, empirical research concerning Chinese investments in the EU is sparse. In
this thesis, we attempt to investigate in a comprehensive way if and how Chinese investments
in the EU differ from investments with other origins. Our empirical analysis focuses on factors
attracting Chinese investments in France and on how Chinese ownership affects the size, performance, and productivity of French firms. By applying an IV probit model, we find that that
higher international experience of the target firm attracts Chinese investors, but also that they
are comparatively less discouraged by the poorer financial health of their targets. Furthermore,
using an IV fixed effects model, we find clear evidence that Chinese ownership is associated
with a smaller size, poorer performance, and lower productivity of the French subsidiary. These
results remain valid after rigorous robustness testing by using propensity score matching and
restricting our sample to various subsamples, although the negative effect associated with Chinese ownership loses significance taking into account the level of democracy and annual growth
rate of the owner’s country. This may imply that Chinese investments are “special” by the
important role of the state and by the economic environment in China stimulating its firms to
catch up quickly.

Dit onderzoek gaat na welke invloed gerecycled plastic uitoefent op enerzijds kwaliteits-, natuurlijkheids- en gezondheidsperceptie en anderzijds op aankoopintentie. Deze invloed wordt onderzocht op twee niveaus, zijnde verpakkings- en productniveau. Verder maakt dit onderzoek een onderscheid tussen een neutraal, gezonder gepercipieerd snack, zijnde een mueslireep, en een ongezond gepercipieerd snack, zijnde een chocoladereep.

Once the boundaries between immanent existence and transcendence have been drawn, a typically modern undertaking, all we are left with is the sensible, whereas the supersensible becomes synonymous with the illusionary. This predicament does not have to be inherently problematic, at least from a religious point of view. For philosophy, however, it has often been understood in terms of a disaster, addressed with the ambiguous notion of nihilism. This is particularly true of post-Nietzschean philosophy, in which a holistic understanding of the notion of nihilism is often adopted to argue for the impossibility of both philosophy and transcendence. In this master’s thesis I investigate the relationship between nihilism, philosophy and transcendence as it came about in the philosophy of Karl Jaspers (1883–1969). This 20th century German thinker took great interest in the concern of the captivity of the immanence of thought and formulated creative answers to the question of transcendence after the alleged death of God. For Jaspers, the problem of nihilism was perennial to philosophy, and in the course of his life he devoted many pages to an attempt of overcoming it.
First, this thesis analyses the problem of nihilism on its own, in its pre-Nietzschean and Nietzschean manifestations, to come to terms with its alleged threat to philosophy. With regard to the vastness and richness of the notion, some topics are inevitably left out, such as the religious nihilism of Walter Benjamin and Gershom Scholem, or the extensive elaborations on nihilism in contemporary continental philosophy, for example on the divergence between the interpretations of Martin Heidegger and Emanuele Severino. Second, we turn to Jaspers’ own understanding of nihilism. Jaspers defined the nature and value of philosophy through its confrontation with nihilism, which, for him, represented a kind of anti-philosophy. Philosophy had to go through nihilism to become true philosophizing. Jaspers proposed an ingenious argument that separates nihilism from philosophy, existence from immanence and truth from knowledge. To make this case, we primarily turn to Jaspers’ Von der Wahrheit, Der philosophische Glaube and his books on Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy. In Nietzsche und das Christentum, for example, Jaspers argued that Nietzsche at times separated the figure of Jesus from Christianity. In this separation, Jaspers argued, a possible way of overcoming Nietzsche’s nihilism in a philosophy that originates in love was already made possible by the fundamental distinctions of Nietzsche’s own critique of Christianity, for example his dismissal of all contradictions.

Een (ernstige) chronische ziekte of een acute, zelfs kleine ingreep kan er toe leiden dat patiënten de zin van het leven en/of hun geloof of levensbeschouwing in vraag stellen. Veel zorgvragers hebben op zo'n moment nood aan ondersteuning van degenen die het dichtst bij hen (en hun bed) staan. Uit onderzoek blijkt echter dat veel verpleegkundigen vaak niet weten hoe ze moeten omgaan met zinvragen, onmacht... binnen de zorgcontext. In deze masterproef worden drie sporen uitgetekend om verpleegkundigen hierin te ondersteunen.

This master’s thesis examines the gendered constructions carried out by eighteenth-century Scottish gallows speeches from women condemned for infanticide. By analysing Lowland broadsides it argues that broadsides could contain authentic traces of lower class women’s voices. By confessing and making a ‘last speech’, women simultaneously made themselves subservient to authorities and acquired an agency to articulate their own opinions on their crime and sentencing. Moreover, they acquired a spiritual authority on the brink of their death, serving as an example on the gibbet which should not be followed, being able to warn others as they had confessed their sins and were about to face a higher judgement. Thus, this thesis argues, Scottish gallows speeches did not only serve to reinforce the judgement of authorities, but also to spread lower class, female opinions on the early modern justice system.

Dit proefschrift is een onderzoeksproject over de socialezekerheidsrechten van de europese extracomunitaria-immigranten.

Aan de hand van de Heksenhamer wordt nagegaan hoe superstitieuze remedies tegen hekserij geconceptualiseerd worden in relatie tot geoorloofde rituelen en welke inherente systematiek daarbij onderscheiden kan worden.

Het uitgangspunt is de vrijheid van meningsuiting. Nochtans zijn er reeds bijzondere strafbepalingen die op het eerste gezicht deze vrijheid beknotten. Doel van de thesis is vanuit rechtsvergelijkend perspectief de accuraatheid van deze strafbepalingen na te gaan en te onderzoeken of er - in de helaas blijvende strijd tegen terreur - nieuwe zogenaamde "uitingsmisdrijven" moeten worden ingevoerd.

In Tanzania heb ik gedurende 3 maand fecale stalen verzameld en geëvalueerd om na te gaan wat de prevalentie is van maag-darm parasieten in schapen en geiten, om zo een beter beeld te krijgen op de gezondheid van de dieren.

Problematiek rond de illegale handel in bedreigde dier- en plantensoorten uitgelegd. Bestaande internationale regelgeving en initiatieven opgesomd, alsook suggesties voor een betere aanpak in de toekomst.

De Eerste Wereldoorlog was een tijd van grote sociale onrust, niet alleen omwille van conflict, maar ook vanwege de effecten van dat conflict op het alledaagse leven en de samenleving als geheel. Deze scriptie onderzoekt de manier waarop de sociale status van vrouwen en algemene genderrelaties in Groot-Brittainië evolueerden tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog aan de hand van prozawerken geschreven door vrouwen. In de eerste plaats verstrekt het onderzoek achtergrondinformatie over de sociale status van vrouwen tijdens de oorlog, vervolgens bespreekt het de situatie van vrouwelijke schrijvers in het begin van de twintigste eeuw en ten slotte behandelt het twee literaire casusstudies, namelijk The Return of the Soldier van Rebecca West en Testament of Youth van Vera Brittain.

De vormgeving van boek zoals we het vandaag kennen, werd grotendeels ontwikkeld in de vroege zestiende eeuw, toen drukkers nieuwe manieren zochten om hun boeken aantrekkelijk te maken. Deze scriptie onderzoekt hoe de vormgeving in deze periode veranderde aan de hand van de casus van één drukkers: de Antwerpenaar Joannes Grapheus.

This master thesis aims to acquire more understanding in the advantages of bus lanes. The paper is subdivided into two main parts. The first part of the research is a literature study, where one will investigate very briefly the evolution of traffic and the use of public transport. This will be followed by a closer look into the phenomenon of bus lanes. Here one will summarize the different types of bus lanes and their possible advantages in certain situations. The first part will be closed with the information one gained during the literature study concerning the methods of measurements to mathematize and visualize the possible relevant advantages. There are two common ways in capturing the details of the underlying system, the first one is a method based on simulation (microscopic-cellular automata). The second one is based on an analytical approach (the queuing theory).
In the second part one will couple the gained knowledge regarding the literature study with a case study in Ghent. For this research one has chosen the Rooigemlaan, in particular the area of the intersection between the Rooigemlaan and the Drongensesteenweg in Ghent. The goal of this case study will be to scale the advantages of an ordinary lane, a dedicated bus lane with and without set back and a lane with intermitted priority for buses. These advantages will be linked with the advantages offered by the use of transit signal priority. To end this thesis one will evaluate the previous described bus lane types and their influences on traffic, this will be done by sensitivity analysis where one will change the input values. To finalize the research, a conclusion will be formed based on a cost-benefit analysis.

Elektronica faalt wanneer het wordt blootgesteld aan straling. Deze scriptie beschrijft het ontwerp van een analoog-digitaal convertor die wel gebruikt kan worden in dergelijke omgevingen.

In deze thesis beschrijf de probleemstelling omtrent esthetische energieproductie op grote schaal en bied ik enkele mogelijke oplossingen. Ook wordt er één specifieke technologie uitgekozen en verder uitgelegd.

Wat is precariteit en wat voor effect heeft het op de muziekindustrie? Aan de hand van een kwalitatieve analyse van zeven ondervraagde muzikanten wordt er gezocht naar problemen en mogelijke oplossingen met betrekking tot precariteit. De conclusie is dat het nog niet te laat is om de belangen van de muzikant te verdedigen en de precariteit weg te werken.

We tried to explain the political rise of the unconventional 2016 U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump and attempted to figure out whether he stands a chance to become the 45th President of the United States.

We analyzed his brand, rhetoric, opponents and American history by looking into numerous American, British and Belgian newspapers and magazines and linked those results to a theoretical framework concerning brand image and social media.

Relightingstudie gemaakt van het magazijn van Stagobel Electro en een KNXVision visualisatie gecreëerd van hun kantoorgebouw.

Ongeacht het type geplande keizersnede, natuurlijk of standaard, werden hoge tevredenheidsscores behaald. Vooral de kwaliteit van de zorg blijkt hierbij een bepalende factor te zijn. Toch is er, wat betreft de betrokkenheid van de ouders bij de bevalling, ruimte voor verbetering voor zowel de standaard- als de natuurlijke aanpak.

In dit onderzoek werp ik licht op de wijze waarop niet-moslims in islamitisch Spanje tussen 900 en 1200 door het islamitisch recht werden beschreven en hoe deze beschrijvingen zich verhielden tot de dagelijkse sociale werkelijkheid. Hiermee toon ik enerzijds aan dat moslims toleranter waren dan veelal gedacht, en dat er een kloof was tussen de geschreven formaliteit van het islamitisch recht en de werkelijkheid van alledag anderzijds.

Several controversy concerning the management of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) and their environmental issues. To reduce the volume of waste about 70-90% the process used is the incineration. However, the material resulting from the plant are produced by an uncontrolled process, therefore they have hazardous chemical composition. To replace MSWI as the raw material in concrete, they should be treated with different process. In this research the ashes (from INDAVER) were treated with water, NaOH and Carbonate and after submitted to the compress strength test, TGA (Termogravimetric Analysis) and ASR (Alkali-Silica Reaction, with glasses aggregate) to evaluate the quality. Relevant the role of the Elemental Al, for this analysis new set up was realize. Results conduced that the MSWI was appropriate to replace raw materials in concrete after treatments.

Onderzoek naar de taalvoorkeuren en de taalattitudes van de inwoners van de Duitstalige Gemeenschap (DG) van België, waarbij het taallandschap als stimulus voor de interviews werd gebruikt.

Deze scriptie handelt over zelf-helend beton door de toevoeging van superabsorberende polymeren (SAPs). Naast de zelf-heling wordt ook de invloed van de toegevoegde SAPs op de chloride-indringing en carbonatieweerstand van het beton getest.
