Deze Vlaamse studenten voorspelden maanden geleden al haarfijn waarom Trump zou winnen

"En we zijn doodserieus", schreven UGent-studenten Ward Boone en Johannes Huysmans al in augustus, haast verontschuldigend. Het was de slotzin van hun thesis over de winstkansen van de Republikeinse presidentskandidaat Donald Trump. Nu, drie maanden later, leest die tekst als een haarfijne analyse van wat er voorbije dinsdagnacht gebeurd is.

Massa's interessante grote analyses gisteren en vandaag over het hoe en het waarom van de zegetocht van Donald Trump. Achteraf weet je altijd alles van tevoren. En ja, het zijn verhalen waarvan ettelijke puzzelstukken de voorbije maanden al op tafel lagen. Maar, ere wie ere toekomt, het waren Ward Boone en Johannes Huysmans, twee studenten van een Gentse master in bedrijfscommunicatie, die de hele puzzel al maanden geleden akelig nauwkeurig in elkaar klikten in hun thesis. "Ons plaatje blijkt nu te kloppen. Helaas, weliswaar", zucht Huysmans.

"Wij vroegen ons enkele maanden geleden af: hoe kan je zo ver komen met zo weinig politieke ervaring en door zo veel onzin uit te kramen?", vertelt hij. "Om dat te verklaren vonden we niet veel antwoorden in de media, want doorgaans berichtten zij over waarom Trump het niét zou halen. Daarom zijn we het in de wetenschappelijke literatuur gaan zoeken."

Stille meerderheid

Niet zozeer Trumps politieke ideeën zijn hun vertrekpunt, wel de analyse van het 'merk' Donald Trump tegenover dat van Clinton. "Experts en politieke observatoren lijken de invloed daarvan te onderschatten", stellen ze. Op basis van een bijna 20 jaar oud marketingmodel (de fameuze 'Brand Personality Scale' van Jennifer Aaker) nemen ze zijn electoraat, stijl en retoriek onder loep en vergelijken ze die met tegenstanders en eerdere vergelijkbare kandidaten. Hun conclusie: "Veertien maanden geleden lachte iedereen met Trumps kansen. Vandaag [...] weten we dat het hem kan lukken. En we zijn doodserieus."

Waarom ze dat denken? "Hij is de man die de spreekwoordelijke 'elephant in the room' durfde aankaarten: miljoenen duidelijk gefrustreerde kiezers die door iedereen over het hoofd werden gezien, op Trump, en misschien Bernie Sanders (de Democratische kandidaat die de duimen moest leggen voor Clinton, red.) na." Klinkt dat u herkenbaar in de oren? Kan kloppen, want dat is exact wat alle kranten vandaag schrijven.

Het succes van Trump is volgens Huysmans en Boone een rechtstreeks gevolg van een "ongebruikelijke combinatie van vraag en aanbod". "Trump is de juiste man op de juiste plaats: gefrustreerde, voornamelijk blanke arbeiders hunkeren naar een autoritaire leider die geen rekening houdt met de sociale conventies, noch met de voorkeuren van tegenstanders en van zijn partij. Ze zoeken iemand die hun verwaarloosde economische frustratie belichaamt, die hen, de 'stille meerderheid', een stem geeft. Iemand met zelfvertrouwen, die hen geruststelt."

Uit de thesis van Boone en Huysmans

Huysmans verwijst naar een onderzoek van de Wall Street Journal in Buchanan County, Virginia, dat bijzonder exemplarisch was. "70 procent van de bevolking stemde daar op Trump in de Republikeinse voorverkiezingen. Het citaat van de lokale sheriff daar is me altijd bijgebleven:  'He talks before he thinks so he doesn’t have time to think up something and lie to you.' De Amerikanen stemmen duidelijk meer met hun hart en minder met hun hoofd."

Nachtmerrie

De twee studenten zetten Trump, met "zijn atypische, op verandering gerichte, meestal non-politieke stijl" en zijn "kiezers die wakker worden uit de Amerikaanse nachtmerrie", tegenover Clinton, die "gesteund wordt door de politieke elite die relatief weinig verandering wil aangezien zij het goed heeft". Het 'merk Clinton' heeft in hun ogen eigenlijk maar één sterk punt: haar politieke ervaring. Wat haar het meest parten zal spelen, is het schandaalsfeertje dat rond haar hangt. 

Haar 'valse' ('crooked' in de woorden van Trump) imago uitbuiten, zal inderdaad het belangrijkste wapen blijken van Trump. Twijfelende kiezers die uiteindelijk voor Trump kozen, halen dezer dagen steevast dat argument boven. "Ga de cijfers er maar eens op na", zegt Huysmans. "Er hebben minder vrouwen op Clinton gestemd dan destijds op Barack Obama. En er stemden meer latino's en zwarten op Trump dan op Mitt Romney. Dat zegt veel." 

Jazeker, Clinton spreekt ongeveer de helft van de Amerikanen aan, klinkt het nog in de slotconclusie van de thesis, "maar Trump wordt de 45ste president van de VS". Dat komt omdat er gewoon meer Trumpkiezers zullen gaan stemmen. Zij hebben nu eenmaal sterkere 'incentives' (verandering tegenover status quo) om dat te doen én een leider waar ze meer naar opkijken. 

Ook daar kregen Huysmans en Boone gelijk: 'Go vote!' was de frenetieke uitroep van Clinton en co. in de laatste dagen voor de verkiezingen. En ja, Clinton haalde uiteindelijk in absolute cijfers zelfs meer stemmen dan Trump, de zogenaamde 'popular vote'. Maar die laatste troefde haar af in zowat alle cruciale staten. En daar draait het in het Amerikaanse kiessysteem nu eenmaal om.

Het ultieme model?

Mogen we nu concluderen dat Trump een politiek model heeft gevonden dat garant staat voor succes? "In elk geval is de aanpak van Trump geen alleenstaand geval", analyseert Huysmans. "Je kan makkelijk de link leggen met de brexit. De pionier van het 'Leave'-kamp, Arron Bank, zei destijds expliciet een 'Trump-achtige' campagne te willen voeren, 'because facts do not work'. Kijk ook naar hoe Rodrigo Duterte aan de macht gekomen is in de Filipijnen." 

Niet dat Trump plots de populistische pionier is. "Maak maar eens de vergelijking met Ronald Reagan: het is onvoorstelbaar hoe veel vergelijkingspunten je daar kunt vinden. Beiden celebrities, beiden onpopulair bij het establishment, beiden in staat om de taal te spreken van de arbeider."

Of hun thesis hen nu veel punten heeft opgeleverd? "Onderscheiding. Maar we hadden eerlijk gezegd stiekem gehoopt op iets meer", grinnikt Huysmans. "Misschien denkt onze promotor daar nu ook anders over." (lacht)
