ECO-ANXIETY, IS IT TABOO OR NOT? A closer look at the impact of climate change on people’s well-being and behavior

Eco-anxiety, taboe of niet?

 

Eco-wat?

Heb jij al eens gehoord van eco-anxiety of klimaatangst? Ik wed van niet. Ook al kun je het bestaan ​​van de klimaatverandering niet meer ontkennen, ben je misschien niet bewust van de impact van de klimaatverandering op ons gedrag en ons mentaal welzijn. Hoe komt het nu dat termen als klimaatangst en eco-depressie niet zo bekend zijn? Is het omdat het niet bestaat? Of is er sprake van taboe?

 

Directe of indirecte effecten?

Eerst dient er iets duidelijk te worden gemaakt alvorens we verder kunnen. Een belangrijk onderscheid kan worden gemaakt tussen de directe of indirecte effecten van de klimaatveranderingen. De directe effecten, zoals je wel al kon vermoeden, omvatten natuurrampen zoals orkanen, bosbranden, extreme stormen, enzovoort, die afkomstig zijn van de klimaatverandering, wat leidt tot directe verliezen van en huis, dierbaren of leidt tot een persoonlijk letsel. De indirecte effecten zijn het resultaat van de meer geleidelijke trage effecten zoals de zeespiegelstijging, de veranderende temperatuur, de aanhoudende droogte of het geleidelijk verlies van natuurlijke omgevingen.

Nu dit onderscheid duidelijk is gemaakt, zal je zelf wel al een vermoeden hebben van welke effecten zich voornamelijk in België en Nederland voordoen…

Inderdaad de indirecte effecten! Helaas is er nog niet veel onderzoek gebeurd naar de impact hiervan op ons mentaal welzijn en gedrag…

 

Kwalitatief onderzoek

Door middel van een verkennend kwalitatief onderzoek werden acht respondenten geïnterviewd die nieuwe inzichten opleverden voor de klimaatpsychologie. Deze respondenten werden gekozen aan de hand van een vragenlijst die angst voor het klimaat naging. Zo dienden de respondenten een voldoende mate van angst te vertonen, naast het hebben van een leeftijd tussen 18 en 30 en woonachtig te zijn in België of Nederland.  

Het doel van het onderzoek was om een ​​antwoord te krijgen op drie onderzoeksvragen, waarvan de eerste de impact van de klimaatverandering op het mentaal welzijn onderzocht. De psychologische symptomen ten gevolge van de klimaatverandering zijn niet meer te ontkennen. Ondanks de naam ‘klimaatangst' bestaan de ​​klachten niet alleen uit angstige gevoelens; termen zoals klimaatangst, klimaatverdriet en klimaatdepressie zijn moeilijk van elkaar te onderscheiden. Er is sprake van angst voor het heden maar ook voor de toekomst. Het voorspelbare leven die we kenden, is er niet meer maar wordt gevoed door onzekerheid en onvoorspelbaarheid. Hoe zal ons leven er binnen zoveel jaar uitzien? Is het nog wel verantwoord om kinderen te krijgen? Alle respondenten maken zich dagelijks zorgen over het klimaat. Voor sommigen groeide dit zelfs uit tot een soort van preoccupatie of obsessie waarbij hun levensdoel draait om het klimaat. Dat deze mensen stress ervaren, is niet te ontkennen. Bovendien kunnen depressieve gevoelens zoals hopeloosheid en hulpeloosheid worden veroorzaakt door de geringe controle die wordt ervaren over de situatie en over anderen die geen milieubewust gedrag hanteren. Er is ook sprake van onzekerheid en verdriet omwille van het verlies van het vroegere zorgeloos gekende.

Daarnaast werd een antwoord gegeven op de vraag naar de impact van de klimaatverandering op het gedrag van mensen. Het is duidelijk dat deze mensen zich ontzettend hard inzetten in het klimaat. Dit doen ze door een milieuvriendelijke levensstijl te hanteren. Wanneer ze dan toch eens geen milieuvriendelijk gedrag stellen is dit eerder te wijten aan de idee om zichzelf mentaal te willen beschermen of omdat deze levensstijl tijd, geld en moeite kost. Wat ik voornamelijk zag, waren mensen die ieder op zijn manier zich wou inzetten in het klimaat. Ze leggen een grote verantwoordelijkheid bij zichzelf. De idee van ‘movement’ kwam sterk naar voor; steeds meer mensen aansporen tot milieuvriendelijk gedrag. Het doet me wat denken aan de golven van de zee waarbij de beweging van het water je voortduwt.

Het luisteren naar de motivatie die deze mensen hebben, is prachtig én krachtig.

Zoals reeds verteld, dragen deze mensen een grote verantwoordelijkheid, misschien zelfs te veel… Bijna iedereen gaf aan hun bijdrage als onvoldoende te aanschouwen. Het lijkt bijna een onmogelijke taak om andere burgers te overtuigen, laat staan de grote bedrijven die een grote rol spelen in de vervuiling. Dit leidt tot grote frustratie. Ondanks deze onmogelijke taak, geven deze mensen niet op. Al is het wel met vallen en opstaan. En dit vallen en opstaan doen ze voornamelijk alleen.

De impact van de klimaatverandering op het sociaal welzijn werd als laatste onderzoeksvraag onderzocht. Sociale steun wordt ervaren binnen klimaatgroepen of mensen met vergelijkbare interesse waarbij ze het gevoel hebben geaccepteerd en gewaardeerd te worden, wat een positieve invloed heeft op hun mentaal welzijn. Veel respondenten ervaren echter beperkte steun van anderen en sommigen spreken zelfs van een ‘verbroken verbinding’. Praten met anderen en proberen het taboe te doorbreken zou helpen om verbinding te maken, wat op zijn beurt een positieve invloed zou hebben op het mentaal welzijn.

 

Hoe nu verder?

Ook op vlak van wetenschappelijk onderzoek dient er een movement te komen. Zo hoop ik dat zowel op wetenschappelijk als op het gebied van de geestelijke gezondheidszorg inspanningen worden geleverd om dit onderwerp meer bekendheid te geven en bespreekbaar te maken. Ten slotte moet de geestelijke gezondheidszorg de mentale gezondheidsproblemen aanpakken die verband houden met de klimaatverandering.

 

Mensen die opkomen voor het klimaat zijn als wilde bloemen

Zoals reeds verteld, hebben alle acht respondenten mij elk afzonderlijk kunnen inspireren wat heeft geleid tot een metaforische vergelijking. Zo zie ik mensen die opkomen voor het klimaat als wilde bloemen.

Wilde bloemen houden zich niet aan wat ‘normaal’ is voor de samenleving. Ze worden niet door mensen gekweekt, maar groeien op natuurlijke wijze door afhankelijk te zijn van zichzelf en de natuur. Ze dragen ook bij aan de natuur en de biodiversiteit.

Wilde bloemen zijn krachtig en dapper genoeg om op te komen voor waar ze in geloven. Hoewel mensen ze misschien niet altijd leuk vinden, zullen ze altijd een manier vinden om terug te komen op een nog sterkere manier.
