Echte mannen huilen niet. Kwalitatief onderzoek naar de ervaring van psycho-educatie omtrent gendernormen en emotionele expressie bij een groep mannen tijdens een psychiatrische opname.

Echte mannen in de psychiatrie huilen wel

Het is oké dat Jan liever Janne wordt, maar niet oké dat Jan huilt. Het stereotiepe beeld van de échte man die niet mag huilen, sterk is en al zijn problemen zelf wel zal oplossen, is anno 2021 nog geen verleden tijd. Zo’n stereotypes zorgen er mee voor dat mannen minder snel psychologische hulp zoeken dan vrouwen. Met alle gevolgen van dien.

Da’s zo een deel van opvoeding denk ik, ‘ge moogt ni huilen in het bijzijn van anderen, da’s een teken van zwakte’ en ik weet da da ni zo is, maar da is gewoon die mythe van mannen mogen niet huilen en die is er bij mij letterlijk ingeklopt.

Aan het woord is een man die tijdens zijn opname in een psychiatrische instelling deelnam aan een onderzoek van klinisch psychologe Sarah Devriendt (UGent). Hoewel genderthema’s alsmaar meer maatschappelijke aandacht krijgen, wordt hier te weinig aandacht aan besteed in de geestelijke gezondheidszorg. Therapieën focussen zich vaak hoofdzakelijk op het individuele niveau. Dit zorgt ervoor dat er te weinig wordt stilgestaan bij de invloed van gendernormen op het mentaal welzijn van mannen. Hierdoor werd in het onderzoek voor het eerst in Vlaanderen groepssessies met mannelijke psychiatrische patiënten georganiseerd en geëvalueerd rond gendernormen.  

Pijnlijke confrontatie

Ge denkt als man zijnde da ge beter zelfmoord pleegt dan da ge hulp zoekt.

Uit de interviews na de groepssessies bleek dat alle deelnemers vroeger leerden dat ze hun kwetsbare gevoelens zoals angst en verdriet moesten onderdrukken. Ook zelfredzaamheid stond voorop. Dit droeg bij aan hoe ze op latere leeftijd teruggrepen naar alcohol en drugs om met hun emoties om te gaan. Ook suïcidepogingen en fysieke agressie naar anderen toe waren voor veel mannen geen ver-van-hun-bed-show. Tijdens hun voorgaande therapieën werd niet stilgestaan bij de negatieve invloed van gendernormen. Het inzicht tijdens de sessies van deze studie, dat dit gedrag grotendeels voortkwam uit hoe hen werd geleerd om een “echte man” te zijn, was voor hen een pijnlijke confrontatie. Ze waren zich namelijk onbewust van de invloed die gendernormen op hun persoonlijk leven uitoefenen en hebben uitgeoefend. Zo haalde een man aan nu pas te beseffen dat hij zijn zoon en dochter verschillend heeft opgevoed, parallel met de rigide gendernormen die aan bod kwamen tijdens de sessies.

Krachtige transformatie

Tijdens de sessies staat ge meer stil bij uzelf van ahja ik bekijk mij soms ook onbewust van ‘ik mag ni wenen’, maar naarmate de sessies had ik zoiets van ‘waarom zou ik altijd een gezicht opzetten? Waarom zou ik altijd moeten lachen?’. Ik ben een man met emoties en geen robot. Als het ni ga, mogen mensen da zien en da maakt mij kwetsbaar, maar da maakt mij ook tot de persoon wie da ik ben.

Naast de confronterende bewustwording van de invloed van gendernormen op hun gedrag en mentaal welzijn, gaven de sessies hen kracht om te evolueren in hun denkwijze over gendernormen. Zo vormden de sessies een platform om het stereotiep mannelijk ideaalbeeld achterwege te laten. Hierbij willen ze het imago van steeds “de sterke te zijn” loslaten. De deelnemers gaven aan meer over hun emoties te zullen praten. Daarnaast willen ze de ervaringen van de groepssessies meenemen naar hun mannelijke vriendenkring om eveneens daar het taboe te doorbreken.

Bovendien haalden participanten aan dat deze groepssessies een positieve invloed uitoefenden op hun zelfbeeld en eigenwaarde. De deelnemers realiseerden zich door de sessies dat het label “man” geen invulling zou mogen zijn voor de persoon die je moet zijn. Voor deze invulling mag je volgens hen zelf zorgen. De definiëring van “man zijn” verschuift zo van een maatschappelijke naar een meer flexibele individuele invulling. Ook betekende het voor enkele mannen de start in hun zoektocht naar hun genderidentiteit.

Mannen willen meer spreken, maatschappij moet meer luisteren

Wat ook duidelijk werd in dit onderzoek is dat mannen de juiste omstandigheden nodig hebben om hun emoties te uiten. Ze hebben nood aan niet-veroordelende omgeving die luistert, ondersteunt, emoties valideert en zelf ook openlijk over emoties praat. Dit bevordert hen om zelf emoties te delen. Voor de deelnemers van deze studie was het ook betekenisvol dat de groep enkel uit mannen bestond. Dat groepsgenoten zich kwetsbaar opstelden, was een aanmoediging voor anderen om hetzelfde te doen. De afwezigheid van vrouwen zorgde ervoor dat gevoelige topics waar vrouwen in betrokken waren, zoals slechte ervaringen met vrouwen, meer open besproken werden. “Mannen onder elkaar” ervaarden de deelnemers als een bron van veiligheid.

Door hier te zijn in opname heb ik het contact met het realistische een beetje verloren. Hier ben ik veilig, maar eens da ik de stap naar buiten zet, wordt da anders.

Een belangrijke conclusie van deze studie is de meerwaarde van genderthema’s op te nemen in therapeutische behandelingen. In therapie worden problemen nu vooral individueel bekeken. Zo wordt er te weinig rekening gehouden met maatschappelijke verwachtingen. Dit maakt de overgang van een therapeutische omgeving naar een “hardere” realiteit moeilijker. De deelnemers gaven aan dat ze het daarom aangenaam vonden om met mannen te spreken over wat de maatschappij nog steeds verwacht en hoe ze hier anders mee kunnen omgaan. Ook voelen de deelnemers zich zelfverzekerder na de groepssessies om assertief te reageren op genderstereotiepe reacties.

Mannen willen spreken over hun emoties en deze openlijk tonen. Het is aan de maatschappij om meer naar hen te luisteren.

Op naar een wereld waar Jan mag huilen. Zonder taboe. Zonder schaamte.
