Medicinale cannabis: wat is er nu van aan?

Cannabis, een begrip dat zeker en vast wel betekenis oproept maar heb je al gehoord van medicinale cannabis. Wonderverhalen gaan rond en deze gaan over verschillende aandoeningen. Maar is het nu wel zo een wondermiddel …

De cannabisplant

Mogelijks wel. Om mee te zijn met het verhaal is het noodzakelijk om wat achtergrondinformatie te weten. De cannabisplant bestaat uit verschillende chemische cannabinoïden. Voorbeelden van zo’n cannabinoïden zijn THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) en CBD (cannabidiol). De THC in de plant zorgt voor het psychotrope effect. Het effect dat de recreatieve gebruiker wenst te bekomen. Daarnaast heeft het nog andere medische eigenschappen. Ook CBD heeft verschillende medische eigenschappen.

Het endocannabinoïden systeem

Enkele jaren terug werd een endocannabinoïde systeem ontdekt. Een systeem dat bestaat uit endocannabinoïden, endocannabinoïde receptoren en verschillende enzymen. Het is massaal geïntegreerd in het lichaam. Met andere woorden: het is overal terug te vinden in het menselijk lichaam. In het lichaam worden door enzymen verschillende endocannabinoïden aangemaakt. Deze endocannabinoïden koppelen zich op de cannabinoïde receptoren en hebben een heel wat positieve reacties tot gevolg. Onderzoek toont aan dat ook de cannabinoïden in de cannabisplant dit systeem kunnen activeren. En net omdat het systeem zo massaal geïntegreerd is wordt er gesteld dat medicinale cannabis voor een hele reeks aandoeningen verlichting kan bieden.

Indicaties

Zo zou medicinale cannabis zou effectief zijn bij het verlichten van klachten bij:

  • Pijn
  • Misselijkheid en braken
  • Multiple sclerose
  • Epilepsie
  • Maag en darmklachten
  • Fibromyalgie

Contra-indicaties

Kan het middel nu door iedereen gebruikt worden? Wel neen, net als bij elk ander geneesmiddel heb je bij medicinale cannabis enkele factoren waarvoor extra voorzichtigheid geboden is. Denk hierbij maar aan patiënten die een verslaving hebben doorgemaakt of personen met hart- en vaatziekten. Ook jonge personen dienen extra voorzichtig te zijn. Dit omdat de cannabis negatieve effecten heeft op de hersenen.

Beschikbare middelen

Wist je zelfs dat er vandaag de dag al meerdere middelen bestaan. Elk middel heeft zijn eigen concentratie van stoffen die cannabis bevat en zijn eigen werking en indicaties. Er bestaan zelfs middelen die niet roesopwekkend zijn en waarvan je zou kalmeren. Let wel: cannabis dat je gewoon op straat koopt of bij kennissen valt niet onder medicinale cannabis! De veiligheid van deze middelen kunnen niet gegarandeerd worden. De keuze van welk middel dat gebruikt wordt is afhankelijk van de wensen van de patiënt en van de reden waarvoor cannabis gebruikt wordt.

Belang van medische begeleiding

Kan je nu zomaar starten met medicinale cannabis. Ja en neen. CBD-olie is vrij verkrijgbaar en kan je zo kopen in de apotheker (of online). Voor producten met THC heb je echter een voorschrift nodig. Ondanks dat CBD vrij verkrijgbaar is, is medische begeleiding sterk aanbevolen om verschillende redenen. Denk maar aan het vinden van een juiste en veilige dosis, het opvangen van mogelijke bijwerkingen, jij bestaan bij vragen …

Enkele aandachtspunten die zeker nog belangrijk zijn om even mee te geven:

  • Geloof niet zomaar elk verhaal dat je leest over medicinale cannabis. Vraag voldoende informatie aan de huisarts, apotheker of verpleegkundige en check na of de informatie waarover jij beschikt weldegelijk klopt.
  • start nooit op eigen houtje op. Check of het voor jou veilig is om met medicinale cannabis te starten.
  • De wetenschap is het nog sterk oneens over waarvoor medicinale cannabis nu wel of niet goed is. Dit wilt dus zeggen dat er op dit moment nog te weinig bewijs is over de effecten van medicinale cannabis op ons lichaam

Is medicinale cannabis nu dan echt zo een wondermiddel. Wel dit is moeilijk te zeggen! Je kan wel stellen dat er dringend meer onderzoek moet komen om meer duidelijkheid te brengen. En meer onderzoek start bij het doorbreken van de grote taboe op medicinale cannabis…

Wordt zeker en vast vervolgd!
