Begeleiding voor topsporters, ook nà hun carrière

De overgang van topsport naar het sportpensioen loopt duidelijk niet altijd van een leien dakje. Veel sporters sukkelen na de carrière met hun gezondheid. Uit onderzoek blijkt nu dat sociale groepen waar topsporters toe behoren hier een belangrijke rol in spelen. Nuttige informatie voor betere begeleiding van topsporters na hun carrière?

Stoppen met topsport

Het komt jammer genoeg veel voor dat topsporters kampen met gezondheidsproblemen na hun carrière. Velen krijgen depressieve gevoelens en lijden hier ook fysiek onder. Verschillende factoren spelen hierbij een rol. Zo maakt het een groot verschil of de sporter bewust kan kiezen om te stoppen, persoonlijke doelen heeft bereikt en/of actief blijft in de sport. Een vergelijking tussen ex-veldrijders Niels Albert en Sven Nys maakt dit heel duidelijk. Bij Albert werden hartproblemen vastgesteld, waardoor hij verplicht werd om de sport vaarwel te zeggen. Nys daarentegen zette bewust een punt achter zijn carrière en heeft daarin de hoogst mogelijk doelen bereikt. Terwijl Albert uit het veldritbeeld verdween, bleef Nys zich voor de sport inzetten als coach, ambassadeur en analist.

Identiteit?

Toch zijn er eveneens sporters die bewust stoppen en hun carrièredoelstellingen hebben bereikt, maar desondanks moeilijkheden ervaren bij de overgang naar hun sportpensioen. Dit komt vooral voor bij sporters die een sterke focus hebben op wie ze zijn als sporter, wat ook wel ‘de identiteit als sporter’ genoemd wordt. Het feit dat hij/zij sporter is staat centraal in zijn/haar leven en bepaald in grote mate het zelfbeeld. Het wegvallen van deze identiteit kan dus een grote impact hebben. Naast deze identiteit als sporter spreken ze in wetenschappelijke literatuur ook over ‘sociale identiteiten’. Deze hebben betrekking op de groepen waartoe men behoort en bepalen mee onze gedachten, gevoelens en zelfbeeld. Zo zal Sven Nys zijn identiteit als sporter ‘elite-veldrijder, geboren in Bonheiden op 17 juni 1976’ geweest zijn (tijdens zijn carrière). Zijn sociale identiteit was dan onder meer ‘vader in een gezin van drie’, ‘inwoner van Baal’ en ‘renner van het team Crelan-AA Drink’.

Sportpensioen

Uit onderzoek is meermaals gebleken dat net deze sociale identiteiten belangrijk zijn voor het welzijn en dit vooral tijdens ingrijpende levensveranderingen, zoals de overgang van het werkveld naar het pensioen. In dit onderzoek focussen we ons op de specifieke context van het sportpensioen bij topsporters. We bekijken de invloed van het behouden en/of verwerven van sociale identiteiten op gezondheid en welzijn, alsook de invloed van het verlies van identiteit als sporter.

Sociale groepen goed voor je gezondheid

Ex-topsporters werden gecontacteerd om een reeks vragen in te vullen over hun carrièrebeëindiging, identiteiten en welzijn. De resultaten bevestigden onze vermoedens dat sporters die een verlies ervaren van hun persoonlijke identiteit als sporter meer kampen met mentale en fysieke gezondheidsproblemen. Ook werd aangetoond dat zowel het behouden van sociale groepen die men had tijdens de carrière, als het verwerven van nieuwe sociale groepen na de carrière de gezondheid en het welzijn ten goede komen. Deze resultaten kunnen gebruikt worden om sporters die hun carrière beëindigen beter te begeleiden tijdens deze overgangsfase en op die manier hun gezondheid en hun welzijn te beschermen. En dat daar nood aan is blijkt ook uit volgende getuigenis:

“Jammer dat je na je carrière geen begeleiding en erkenning krijgt. Tijdens is alles mogelijk, maar op het moment dat je stopt sta je er alleen voor.” (ex-Olympisch roeister)
