The European football landscape: An analysis of the performance of Belgian, German and English football teams

Werk aan de winkel voor het Engelse en Belgische voetbal

Voetbal is en blijft de populairste sport ter wereld. Deze populariteit transformeerde de laatste 20 jaar Europese voetbalclubs in geldverdienende machines. Is dit daadwerkelijk het geval of zijn voetbalclubs eerder geldverslindende bedrijven? Slagen clubs er in om daadwerkelijk financiële opstekers te linken aan sportief succes?

Allereerst heeft de oprichting van de Champions League in 1992 en de uitvoering van het Bosman-arrest in 1995 geleid tot een exponentiële toename van de betalingen aan voetballers en bijgevolg tot een hertekening van de grenzen binnen het Europese voetbal. In dit onderzoek zijn er drie competities onder de loep genomen: de Jupiler Pro League, de Bundesliga en de Premier League. In elke competitie zijn er 12 clubs geselecteerd, die de voorbije 10 jaar het meest op het hoogste niveau hebben gespeeld.  Er wordt gekeken naar de relaties tussen verschillende constructen binnen het voetbal, meer in het bijzonder naar de financiële, sportieve en zakelijke prestaties van deze clubs en of er al dan niet een versterkende of tegenstrijdige relatie bestaat tussen deze constructen.

De maatstaven voor performance

Financiële prestaties van een voetbalclub kunnen worden geanalyseerd in termen van hun vermogen om een niveau van winstgevendheid, liquiditeit, financiële draagkracht, financiële autonomie en financiële onafhankelijkheid te behalen. Deze kunnen allen teruggevonden worden in de boekhouding van de clubs. Sportieve resultaten worden toegekend op basis van de klassering in de nationale competitie, prestaties in de nationale bekercompetities, aangevuld met de Europese resultaten. Tenslotte zeggen de zakelijke prestaties iets over de omzet, en bijgevolg de grootte van de voetbalclubs. Deze maatstaven zijn gebaseerd op het werk van Galariotis et al. (2018) die een soortgelijk onderzoek hebben uitgevoerd in de Franse Ligue 1.

Eén van de bevindingen is dat de omzetten in alle drie de competities duidelijk zijn gestegen, maar deze gaan gepaard met een hogere totale en langlopende schuld, alleen de Bundesliga slaagt erin om een stabiel schuldniveau te handhaven. Als we kijken naar het gemiddelde netto-inkomen zien we dat dit gemiddelde in Duitsland positief is, terwijl dit in de Premier League van jaar tot jaar schommelt met enkele jaren die op omvangrijke verliezen wijzen en in België schommelt dit cijfer rond de 0. Wat de netto-transfers betreft, is België de enige competitie die een gemiddeld positief netto-saldo kan handhaven. Hiermee toont België zijn reputatie van doorverkoop-competitie nogmaals aan. Terwijl in de Premier League dit nummer elk jaar meer de dieperik induikt.

De Bundesliga wel, de Jupiler Pro League en Premier League niet

Na het verder bestuderen van de financiële component van voetbalclubs aan de hand van een factoranalyse, een methode waarbij bepaalde constructen bepaalde clusters vormen op basis van een statistische regressiemethode, is gebleken dat deze component kan opdelen in drie componenten: grootte, winstgevendheid en schuld. Op basis van deze nieuwe constructen zijn er duidelijke gelijkenissen tussen België en Engeland waar te nemen, waar grootte en schuld een significante variabelen vormen bij het verklaren van de sportieve resultaten. In Duitsland zijn dit de grootte en de winstgevendheid.

De clubs zijn ook individueel kort onderzocht door middel van een lineaire regressie met fixed effects om dieper in te gaan op de heterogeniteit van de individuele clubs. Daaruit blijkt wanneer men de clubs individueel onder de loep neemt, winstgevendheid de enige significante variabele vormt, om op clubniveau de sportprestaties voor alle drie de competities te verklaren. Een interessante bevinding en voer voor verder onderzoek.

Bovendien is het duidelijk dat voor de drie competities de grootte van een voetbalclub, samenhangt met financiële prestaties. In de Jupiler Pro League en de Premier League gaan winstgevendheid en sportieve resultaten niet samen, terwijl de Bundesliga hier gemiddeld wel in slaagt. Voetbalclubs hebben de neiging om schulden te creëren en financiële gezondheid op te offeren voor het behalen van sportief succes. Voetbalclubs in Engeland en België zijn geldverslindende machines, terwijl we kunnen concluderen dat het 'gemiddelde' bedrijfsmodel van de Bundesliga op de lange termijn meer standvastigheid laat zien. Werk aan de winkel dus voor het Engelse en Belgische voetbal.
