Indringers of slachtoffers?

 

 

 

Sinds de zomer van 2015 heeft Europa te maken met een stijging van asielzoekers ten gevolge van ongunstige levensomstandigheden in hun thuisland. Deze grote aantal aankomsten en daaropvolgende asielaanvragen kregen de benaming vluchtelingencrisis. De vluchtelingen en de daarbij horende crisis blijven een terugkerend thema in de mediaberichtgeving. Hier is al veel onderzoek naar gedaan. Waar minder onderzoek naar is gedaan, is de ontvangerszijde van deze mediaberichtgeving. De focus van dit artikel is dan specifiek de  ontvangerszijde van alternatieve media. Zij worden beschreven als the virutually unknown waar nog niet veel over geweten is. De vraagt luidt: Met welke bril kijken de ontvangers van alternatieve media naar deze vluchtelingen? 

Om het onderzoek verder af te bakenen focussen we ons op de lezers van Media.21, een overkoepeling van de belangrijkste alternatieve digitale media in Vlaanderen. Het onderzoek werd gedaan aan de hand van een framinganalyse en vijf vooropgestelde frames. Het meest voorkomende frame over de meeste nieuwsbronnen is het indringer-frame. Nieuwkomers worden beschouwd als indringers, moordenaars en profiteurs, waar de grenzen voor moeten worden gesloten. Ze vormen een bedreiging voor de Vlaamse en Europese identiteit. Daarnaast is er ook sprake van een angst voor de veiligheid van het eigen land, eigen volk en de toekomst. Vooral de islam wordt hier naar voren geschoven als een bedreiging. Hoewel de artikels niet spreken over moslims of de islam, wordt er wel een verband gelegd door verschillende lezers.

Het tweede meest voorkomende frame blijkt het slachtoffer-frame te zijn. Hier spreken ze over de schending van de rechten en de onmenselijke aanpak. Het zijn voornamelijk (minderjarige) kinderen die de slachtofferrol toegewezen krijgen. Nieuwkomers worden hier beschouwd als slachtoffers waar anderen geld aan verdienen. Verder worden nieuwkomers beschouwd als slachtoffers van advocaten, politici en smokkelaars. De nieuwkomers worden misbruikt en niet goed geïnformeerd volgens de lezers. Ook heerst de gedachte dat nieuwkomers mensen in nood zijn en het de plicht van de mens is om elkaar te helpen. Het spreken met nieuwkomers en het aanhoren van hun verhaal, wordt sterk aangemoedigd door de lezers.

Wij worden slachtoffers in ons eigen land door hen.

Het derde meest voorkomende frame is het “not in my backyard”-frame. Deze uit zich in uitingen zoals “Waarom komen ze eigenlijk naar hier?” en “Wij worden slachtoffers in ons eigen land door hen.”. Vanuit de ‘not in my backyard'-gedachte ontstaat er een ‘Why in my backyard?’-gedachte. De focus ligt hier op het eigenbelang.

Tenslotte is er nog het voorziener-frame en het alles in de tuin is prachtig-frame die in mindere mate voorkomen. In het voorziener-frame focussen de lezers zich op het feit dat de vluchtelingen een meerwaarde zullen zijn voor de economie. Het alles in de tuin is prachtig-frame benadrukt voornamelijk het “iedereen is van de wereld en de wereld is van iedereen” idee.

De wetenschappelijke onderzoeksvraag luidde als volgt: Hoe reageren gebruikers van Facebook-pagina’s van alternatieve media op de berichtgeving over vluchtelingen in Europa? Hoewel de artikelen rond het thema vluchtelingencrisis redelijk neutraal tot positief berichtgeven, blijken negatieve reacties toch te domineren. Er is een duidelijke (afwisselende) dominantie merkbaar van het indringer-, slachtoffer- en ‘not in my backyard’-frame aan de ontvangerszijde van Facebook-pagina’s van Media.21 aanwezig. Het voorziener- en alles in de tuin is prachtig-frame komen beperkt naar voren. Bij elke nieuwsbron zijn de twee meest voorkomende frames zo goed als evenveel voorkomend, telkens met een nipte meerderheid. Verder blijken alternatieve media een kans te bieden voor de gewone mens om mediamaker te zijn en geven een stem aan de vluchteling of asielzoeker om hun verhaal in de media toe te lichten. Zo blijkt uit dit onderzoek dat verhalen achter vluchtelingen het slachtoffer-frame krijgen en zorgen voor meer begrip.
