Assessing the impact of influencers on brand engagement across different categories on Instagram

Welk effect hebben influencers echt op Instagram? Hoe benutten bedrijven dit optimaal? Een kwantitatieve studie.

Wat is de snelst groeiende online klantenwervingsmethode? Wat is tegenwoordig de beste methode om de naamsbekendheid te vergroten? Om nieuwe doelgroepen te bereiken? Om de omzetgroei te verhogen? Het antwoord op deze vragen is Influencer Marketing. Maar welk effect heeft Influencer Marketing nu precies op de naamsbekendheid op Instagram? Hoe kunnen bedrijven deze marketing strategie optimaal benutten? 

 

Introductie

Influencer Marketing is populairder dan ooit door de opkomst van het Internet en de daarbij horende e-WOM[1]. Mond tot mond reclame werd vroeger gezien als de meest efficiënte manier om naamsbekendheid te vergroten en bijgevolg een grotere winstmarge te creëren. Gezien de opkomst van het Internet, gebeurt deze marketingtactiek meer en meer online door middel van recensies maar ook influencer marketing. Influencers zijn gebruikers van sociale media met een groot bereik, die hun mening over producten en/of diensten van een bepaald merk delen op hun account. De meest gebruikte social media site voor influencer marketing is Instagram. Dit foto- en videogebaseerd sociaal platform stelt gebruikers in staat om elkaars leven te delen en te herkennen door middel van foto's of video's. Door middel van actuele Instagram data werd onderzocht welke impact influencers hebben op de naamsbekendheid van het gepromote merk in drie sectoren: fashion,beauty en food. Onder naamsbekendheid valt hoeveel “likes” en “comments” de volgende post op de pagina van het merk haalt na de post van een influencer. 

 

Methode

Voor dit onderzoek werden de gegevens van 83 merken en 4162 influencers van de Instagram pagina gescraped. De verkregen data is onderverdeeld in drie categorieën: influencer karakteristieken (o.a. de volgers,  engagement ratio[2]…), influencer post karakteristieken (o.a. caption, advertentieweergave, interactie…) en merk post karakteristieken (o.a. caption, regram, interactie…). Om de onderzoeksvraag “Heeft het gebruik van influencers een impact op de merkbetrokkenheid bij Instagram?” te beantwoorden, zijn er vier verschillende modellen opgesteld.

Door middel van Random Forest (machine learning) en de bijbehorende variable importance plots (VIP) and partial dependence plots (PDP) werden de verschillende onderzoeksvragen beantwoord.

Resultaten

Het is duidelijk uit de resultaten van de AUC performance van de verschillende modellen, de Delong Test[3]  en de VIP  dat de influencer karakteristieken en influencer post karakteristieken meer impact hebben op de “comments” en “likes” van het merk dan de karakteristieken van de merk post zelf. Hierbij kunnen we concluderen dat influencers wel degelijk een impact hebben op de merkbetrokkenheid op Instagram voor de drie categorieën. 

 

Nu er kwantitatief is aangetoond dat influencer marketing een impact heeft op de merkbetrokkenheid en de bijhorende naamsbekendheid van het merk, is het interessant om te weten als bedrijf hoe dit optimaal te benutten. Een overzicht van de resultaten zijn samengevat in onderstaande tabel. In wat volgt zullen de belangrijkste bevindingen worden beschreven.

Bedrijven in de fashion sector dienen zich prominent te richten op influencers met minder dan 200 000 volgers. Voor food influencers is het absolute aantal volgers minder belangrijk, zij zouden alleen een hoge engagement ratio en een hoog activiteitenniveau moeten hebben. Dit is een belangrijke bevinding aangezien uit dit onderzoek blijkt dat food influencers vaak lagere engagement ratio's en activiteitsniveaus hebben dan fashion- en beauty influencers. Bovendien investeren food bedrijven meer in dure influencers met veel volgers, wat niet bevorderlijk is voor de merkbetrokkenheid. Bedrijven in de beauty sector moeten rekening houden met de drie verschillende kenmerken, ze moeten proberen om influencers te vinden met minder dan 200 000 volgers die een hoge engagement ratio en een hoog activiteitenniveau hebben.

 

De bevindingen tonen verder aan dat managers in de fashion industrie hun influencers moeten vragen om volledig positief te zijn over de producten die ze promoten. Dit zou zeker een wake-up call moeten zijn voor fashion managers aangezien hun influencers minder positief zijn in hun bijschriften in vergelijking met de beauty en food influencers. Aan de andere kant moeten de laatstgenoemden eerlijk zijn om de merkbetrokkenheid te vergroten, dit betekent dat ze ook de negatieve punten van het product moeten noemen.

 

Vervolgens moet de interactie van de post zorgvuldig worden overwogen. Interactie is de overkoepelende term van het gebruik van hashtags, het gebruik van vragen, het vernoemen van het merk, het aanzetten tot actie en het gebruiken van voornaamwoorden in de caption van de post. Voor de fashion industrie is het interactieniveau alleen belangrijk in de posts van de influencers, terwijl het voor beauty en food belangrijk is voor zowel de posts van de influencers als die van de merken. De relaties van de verschillende interactie-effecten zijn verschillend wat betreft de impact op “likes” en “commentaren” over de categorieën heen, zoals te zien is in de bovenstaande tabel. Het enige interactie-effect dat positief gerelateerd is aan zowel “likes” als “comments” voor alle categorieën is het noemen van het merk in het bijschrift van de influencer. 

 

Conclusie

Een kwantitatieve analyse van 83 merken en 4162 influencers laat zien dat naast de traditionele merk post karakteristieken zowel influencer karakteristieken als influencer post karakteristieken een impact hebben op de merkbetrokkenheid. Bovendien bestaan er veel verschillen in deze karakteristieken over de verschillende productcategorieën heen. De bevindingen van dit onderzoek zijn van groot belang voor managers aangezien de merkbetrokkenheid kan worden geoptimaliseerd door het formuleren van passende richtlijnen voor influencers.
