De voorwaarden van Hindoestanen in Den Haag voor het gebruik van mHealth: een kwalitatief onderzoek

Een gezonde toekomst, kan dat nog?

Steeds meer mensen kampen met overgewicht, diabetes en andere gezondheidsproblemen. Mensen die het niet breed hebben of een migratieachtergrond hebben, lopen een nog groter risico op het krijgen van deze aandoeningen. Kunnen zij efficiënt geholpen worden in het digitale tijdperk? Het antwoord is ...

Ja! Hoe dan? Met apps, meer specifiek gezondheidsapps, ook wel mobile Health (mHealth) genoemd. Deze technologie is een goede manier om mensen, ook kwetsbare groepen, te bereiken en dat is nodig om hen te kunnen motiveren tot een gezonde leefstijl. Dan zorgen we dat ze toegang hebben tot MyFitnessPal of een andere bestaande gezondheidsapp en dan zijn we klaar, toch?

Specifieke behoeften
Nee, zo makkelijk is het helaas niet. De huidige gezondheidsapps spelen niet voldoende in op de specifieke behoeften van kwetsbare groepen zoals bijvoorbeeld Hindoestanen, een Surinaamse bevolkingsgroep met Indiase achtergrond die sterk vertegenwoordigd is in Nederland. Zij hebben genetisch gezien een extra groot risico op het ontwikkelen van diabetes en hart -en vaatziekten, wat versterkt wordt door ongezonde leefstijlgedragingen. Hoe kunnen zij dan geholpen worden? 

Wat is er nodig?
Om dit te bepalen, moeten we achterhalen wat ze precies nodig hebben in een gezondheidsapp om hen te motiveren tot een gezonde leefstijl. Aan de hand van vooronderzoek in de literatuur en het afnemen van interviews bij Hindoestanen heb ik gevonden dat eenvoud, gemak van het gebruik van mHealth en het leveren van een duidelijke meerwaarde hun belangrijkste voorwaarden zijn. Die meerwaarde kan onder andere voorzien worden door individueel aangepaste info, een mindfulnessfunctie en kook- en bewegingstips passend bij de Hindoestaanse cultuur. Daarnaast is het belangrijk dat zo’n app gratis en veilig is.

Gezonde toekomst
En hoe gaat dit nu verder? De basis is gelegd. De volgende stap is de co-creatie van de app met de doelgroep en hen vervolgens voldoende informeren en ondersteunen voor het gebruik ervan.
