De influencer aan het woord: Kwalitatief onderzoek naar de perceptie van influencers over hun rol in influencer marketing

#FOLLOWME: De influencer aan het woord

Wanneer men vroeger aan kinderen de vraag stelde wat ze later graag wilden worden, luidde het antwoord vaak ‘prinses’, ‘brandweerman’ of ‘superheld’. Toen ik een jaar geleden het antwoord ‘influencer’ te horen kreeg van een nog net geen 8-jarig meisje, viel ik dan ook bijna letterlijk van mijn stoel. Is het ‘influencerleven’ dan echt zo mooi als het oogt?

Sociale media influencers (SMI) zijn sociale media gebruikers die beschikken over een groot aantal volgers en die dagelijks foto’s, video’s en verhalen online delen. Omwille van hun expertise in een specifiek domein (bv. mode, fitness, voeding, gaming, lifestyle), slagen ze er gemakkelijk in om de attitudes, het gedrag, de opinies en de aankoopbeslissingen van hun volgers te beïnvloeden. Bijgevolg worden ze steeds vaker ingezet door organisaties om hun merken of producten te promoten, wat gedefinieerd wordt als influencer marketing. In ruil hiervoor krijgen ze een vergoeding die kan gaan van het ontvangen van gratis producten of een uitnodiging voor een bepaald event tot zelfs een financiële vergoeding. Academisch onderzoek naar influencer marketing is de laatste jaren dan ook aan een opmars bezig. Tot nu toe lag de focus hierbij hoofdzakelijk op publieksonderzoek, dat nagaat hoe men influencers kan identificeren of hoe een influencer reclame-effecten kan beïnvloeden. Onderzoek dat focust op hoe jonge en kwetsbare tienerinfluencers omgaan met hun status is echter onbestaand. Deze studie probeert deze kloof te dichten door aan de hand van kwalitatief onderzoek bij tienerinfluencers het fenomeen van sociale media influencer te onderzoeken vanuit het standpunt van de invloedrijke tieners. Hierbij lag de focus voornamelijk op jongeren tussen de 11-17 jaar (N = , 76%), maar deze resultaten werden aangevuld met die van enkele influencers tussen de 22-24 jaar (N = , 24%).

The road to success 

Stel, je wordt morgen wakker met het ondraaglijke verlangen om influencer te worden: hoe begin je eraan? De geïnterviewde influencers lieten ons weten dat dit een proces is waar je als het ware inrolt. Ze hebben met andere woorden hun sociale mediakanalen niet opgericht met de intentie om influencer te worden. Zodra ze hun populariteit zagen toenemen, hebben ze wel enkele groeistrategieën toegepast om dat aan te moedigen. Denk hierbij aan het actiever posten van foto’s of video’s, het frequenter liken van de foto’s van anderen, het gebruik van hashtags en het in de gaten houden van het uur of de dag alvorens inhoud te delen. Achter elke actie schuilt een strategie. Het moment dat je jouw eerste samenwerking binnenhaalt, mag je jezelf volgens hen ‘influencer’ noemen. Opvallend hierbij is wel dat het soms de ouders zijn die hun kinderen aanzetten om een blog te beginnen, of om vaker foto’s te maken of te posten.

Soms vergeet ik om een foto te posten omdat ik andere zaken aan mijn hoofd heb. Maar dan zegt mijn mama ‘zou je niet beter nog eens een foto op Instagram plaatsen?’ en dan maak ik een foto en post ik dat.

#PICKME: de strijd om samenwerkingen

Het samenwerken met merken is voor vele influencers dé mijlpaal tijdens de weg naar het influencer worden. Velen voelen zich hierbij echter een kleine vis in een grote zee, waardoor ze in het begin vaak beslissen om zelf merken te contacteren. 

Maar in de meeste gevallen contacteert het merk de influencer zelf. De geïnterviewde influencers vinden het hierbij belangrijk dat het merk in lijn ligt met hun karaktereigenschappen, al zijn ze niet altijd even waarheidsgetrouw. Zo vinden ze het vaak moeilijk om eerlijk te zijn naar hun volgers toe wanneer het product tegenvalt, of kan de vergoeding hen toch overtuigen om er positief over te rapporten. Misschien toch tweemaal nadenken alvorens we ons laten beïnvloeden?

Als ik het niet mooi vind, maar ik krijg er veel geld voor, dan doe ik het. Je wordt als het ware een beetje omgekocht. Door geld te krijgen denk je ‘goed, dan doe ik het toch maar’.

Influencers aan de macht?

De opkomst van het internet heeft ervoor gezorgd dat gewone consumenten zelf ook steeds meer macht krijgen. Denk maar aan de talloze uren die we al gespendeerd hebben aan het opzoeken of schrijven van productreviews. Dit gegeven wordt in de wetenschappelijke literatuur ook wel ‘consumer empowerment’ genoemd en bestaat volgens Kucuk (2009) uit vier componenten: digitale competentie, economische zelfovertuiging, sociale zelfovertuiging en legale zelfovertuiging. Aan de hand van deze kenmerken toont dit onderzoek aan dat je influencer marketing ook kan beschouwen als een vorm van consumer empowerment. Meer bepaald waren de geïnterviewde influencers er zich van bewust welke macht ze kunnen uitoefenen op hun volgers wegens hun expertise en bereik.

Influencer (wel)zijn

Een paar foto’s maken, en hiervoor in ruil geld of gratis producten krijgen: een droom die uitkomt, of niet? De geïnterviewde influencers gaven aan dat dit niet allemaal rozengeur en maneschijn is. Hoewel hun algemene bevindingen voornamelijk positief zijn, zeker bij tieners, ervaren ze vaak ook een bepaalde druk die kan leiden tot stress of angst. Hierbij is het vaak een uitdaging om goed om te gaan met negatieve reacties en niet de neiging te hebben om zich te vergelijken met andere (meer populaire) influencers. Bovendien dreigen sommige geïnterviewde influencers zich te verliezen in de wereld van sociale media, waardoor ze bepaalde beslissingen in functie van hun influencerstatus nemen.

Ik koop soms kleren die ik niet ga dragen, maar waarvan ik weet het coole foto’s zal opleveren op Instagram. Hetzelfde met mijn kapsel. Ik had dan een froefroe, puur omdat ik wist dat het leuk is om foto’s mee te maken en veel likes zal opleveren. En ik begon dan op reis te gaan, maar niet alleen voor mezelf, maar gewoon omdat ik wist dat dat goed ging zijn voor mijn likes op mijn Instagramfoto’s.

Deze studie had voornamelijk als doel om jonge sociale media influencers aan het woord te laten en hierbij dieper in te gaan op de ervaringen, percepties en gevoelens die ze hebben bij hun rol in influencer marketing.
