Industrie in Chicago

Een van de hot topics van vandaag: industrie bereidt zich voor om zijn come-back te maken naar de hedendaagse steden van de wereld. 

Chicago, een van de grote, bruisende steden van Amerika situeert zich midden in dit wereldwijd fenomeen. Deze stad heeft zonder twijfel in het verleden een impact gehad op andere opkomende steden op vlak van industrie, architectuur en stedenbouw en werd destijds als inspiratiebron beschouwd voor nieuwe steden.

 

Na een uitgebreide studie over Chicago in de 19e en 20e eeuw werd gekeken naar de hedendaagse stad. Wat zijn de problemen die zich vandaag afspelen in de stad? Waar heeft de stad nood aan? Hoe kan een stad verder evolueren? Het is dus vanzelfsprekend dat Chicago centraal komt te staan als we beginnen kijken naar de terugkomst van industrie.

Chicago’s rijke industriële geschiedenis gecombineerd met zijn hedendaagse problemen en noden van de stad zijn de redenen waarom deze stad verkozen is tot een voorbeeld voor de nieuwe fase van de evolutie van de steden.

Duo Statuut

De stad ondervindt een “duo-statuut” waarbij het Noorden en het Zuiden een sociale discrepantie ondervinden op vlak van werk, onderwijsmogelijkheden en veiligheid. Deze zouden tegengegaan kunnen worden op het moment dat de industrie terugkeert naar de stad.

 

“Chicago, City of Doubles” - de originele titel van deze scriptie - onderzoekt dit aspect van Chicago door middel van architectuur. Er wordt gekeken naar de huidige architectuur van de stad en welke soort gebouwen er vandaag ontworpen kunnen worden waarbij diverse functies zoals industrie, publieke ruimtes en residenties een geheel kunnen vormen. 

 

De “doubles” van de scriptietitel verwijzen naar specifieke gebouwen van de stad die een broer of zus hebben ergens in de stad of een ontdubbeling van torens.

Aangezien we op zoek gaan naar architectuur met verschillende functies, architectuur die flexibel is tegenover verschillende functies, gaan we van start met een van deze historische gebouwen van de stad. De Monadnock, een van de meest iconische gebouwen van Chicago, wordt volledig gedefragmenteerd en onderzocht om zo een startpunt te worden voor het nieuw soort gebouw van Chicago.

 

In principe repliceren we de Monadnock. Het wordt eerst volledig geanalyseerd van buiten naar binnen om zo een industrieel prototype te maken. De originele stalen structuur en het ritme worden gerepliceerd maar de gevel krijgt een innovatieve update. Deze prototype vertoont een moderne interpretatie van de originele Monadnock waarbij hedendaagse industrie gecombineerd kan worden met het sociale samenleven van de inwoners van de stad.

Samengevat: deze scriptie onderzoekt hoe industrie op een succesvolle manier terug geïntegreerd kan worden in de stad met als gevolg werkgelegenheden voor de inwoners, innovatieve en verbeterde verbindingen tussen de gemeenschappen van de stad waarbij het ‘duo-statuut’ van de stad stillaan zal verdwijnen. Zo kan op lange termijn een harmonische, bruisende stad gecreëerd worden waarbij elke inwoner en elke gemeenschap dezelfde kansen zullen krijgen.
