Ze snappen er niks van Vertaalproblemen in de pseudovertaling “Elles se rendent pas compte” van Boris Vian

Vlak na WO II hield Boris Vian de Franse literaire wereld voor de gek toen hij zich voordeed als vertaler ‘uit het Amerikaans’ van vier smeuïge detectiveromans, die hij zelf schreef onder het pseudoniem Vernon Sullivan. Maar hoe laat je het misleidende effect intact dat de schrijver ooit voor ogen had als je zo’n roman naar het Nederlands vertaalt?

Het begon met een uit de hand gelopen weddenschap. In de zomer van 1946 kreeg Boris Vian bezoek van Jean D’Halluin, de eigenaar van een noodlijdende uitgeverij die een bestseller zocht om hem uit de penarie te helpen. Vlak na de oorlog waren de Fransen verzot op alles wat ‘Made in USA’ was en D’Halluin hoopte te profiteren van de hype rondom vertalingen van Amerikaanse hard-boiled-detectiveromans. Vian leek de aangewezen persoon om een onontdekte kaskraker te vinden. De schrijver, ingenieur en jazzmuzikant stond bekend als een groot kenner van de Amerikaanse popcultuur. Vian had een beter idee: “Geef me tien dagen en ik fabriceer er eentje voor je.”

Vandaag de dag wordt Boris Vian gekoesterd door het Franse lezerspubliek, maar op dat moment was hij een debutant die geen voet aan de grond kreeg in de literaire wereld. Zijn eerste romans, Vercoquin et Plancton en L’Ecume des jours, flopten en pas in de jaren zestig, jaren na zijn dood, kregen de romans die hij onder eigen naam publiceerde langzaamaan erkenning.

Zijn eerste detectiveroman, J’irai cracher sur vos tombes (1946), later vertaald als Ik zal spuwen op jullie graf (1973), was een heel ander leven beschoren. Vian hield woord en schreef tijdens zijn zomerverlof aan de Franse kust een broeierig verhaal over een licht getinte halfbloed in het Amerikaanse Zuiden die de lynchpartij van zijn donkergekleurde broer wreekt door twee dochters van een plantage-eigenaar te verleiden en te vermoorden. Hij verzon ook een auteur: Vernon Sullivan, een in Chicago geboren oud-soldaat uit een gemengd huwelijk. Vian bedeelde zichzelf op de kaft de rol toe van vertaler. Om de illusie van vertaling te versterken, schreef hij een voorwoord, waarin Vian de totaal onbekende Sullivan tot leven bracht en hij stiekem de op geld beluste Franse uitgeversindustrie op de hak nam.

De seksueel getinte inhoud van de roman trok eerst weinig aandacht, maar toen sleepte een conservatieve organisatie Vian (en Sullivan) voor het gerecht wegens aantasting van de goede zeden. Toen een handelsvertegenwoordiger zijn maîtresse wurgde en een exemplaar van J’irai cracher sur vos tombes op de plaats delict achterliet, was een schandaal geboren. De Franse pers verdeelde zich in twee kampen: linkse kranten prezen het werk als een sociaal bewust rassendrama, rechtse kranten zetten het weg als provocatieve pornografie. Toen oplettende journalisten echter in de smiezen kregen dat ze waren beetgenomen, keerden de kranten zich massaal tegen de jonge schrijver. Vian had intussen zijn tweede ‘Sullivan’ klaar, waarin hij in een vertalersnawoord van leer trok tegen de critici. Zijn eenzijdige ontmaskering weerhield hem er niet van om nog twee Sullivan-romans te produceren: een sciencefictionverhaal en het schunnige misdaadavontuur Elles se rendent pas compte (1950). In een wrede speling van het lot kreeg Vian negen jaar later een hartstilstand tijdens de voorvertoning van een verfilming van de eerste ‘Sullivan’, het boek dat hem commercieel succes maar artistieke rampspoed bracht.

In de afgelopen decennia hebben vertaalwetenschappers ontdekt dat Vians fratsen geen eenmalig incident zijn, maar een doelbewuste literaire strategie die van alle tijden is. De pseudovertaling, zoals dit fenomeen wordt genoemd, komt voor van Japan tot Hongarije en telt een groot aantal beroemde beoefenaars, waaronder Tolkien, Umberto Eco en Voltaire. Het bekendste voorbeeld van een pseudovertaling is wellicht Don Quichot van La Mancha, die Cervantes presenteerde als een gevonden manuscript dat hij uit het Arabisch had vertaald. Schrijvers hebben de meest uiteenlopende motieven voor hun lezersbedrog: erkenning, ontsnapping aan censuur of winstbejag. De rel rond de Sullivan-romans legde Vian geen windeieren: van de ontvangen royalty’s als schrijver (en vertaler!) kon hij jarenlang comfortabel leven. Bovendien gaf zijn Amerikaanse alter ego hem de kans om met taboes te experimenteren.

Om in hun list te slagen, zegt vertaalwetenschapper Gideon Toury, is het niet genoeg om enkel het woord vertaling op de kaft te zetten: het boek moet als vertaling worden “geproduceerd.” Veel pseudovertalers schrijven daarom een vertalersvoorwoord, doorspekken hun verhalen met vreemde woorden uit de zogenaamde broncultuur en voorzien ze van overvloedige voetnoten. Om de lezer van de aanwezigheid van een vertaler te overtuigen, voegen ze zelfs doelbewust slecht (want letterlijk) vertaalde buitenlandse woorden en uitdrukkingen toe.

Omdat het eerder genoemde Elles se rendent pas compte als enige ‘Sullivan’ nooit naar het Nederlands werd vertaald, is in een masterthesis van de KU Leuven geprobeerd om het zó te vertalen dat de valse vertaler in het origineel zichtbaar blijft. Dit is in tegenspraak met hoe Nederlandstalige lezers graag vertalingen lezen: we zijn gewend aan een onzichtbare vertaler die ons het gevoel geeft dat we het origineel voor ons hebben.

Elles se rendent pas compte (Ze snappen er niks van) speelt zich af in Washington, waar de jonge snobs Francis en Ritchie Deacon als vrouw verkleed strijd leveren met een drugsbende van homo’s en lesbiennes. Vian bestookte de lezer met Amerikaanse straatnamen, merken en beroemdheden. In de tekst doken daarnaast letterlijk vertaalde termen op die een Franse lezer vreemd zou doen opkijken. Zo gebruiken verschillende personages de uitroep “sûr!”, een directe vertaling van het Engelse “sure!”, wat net zo bizar klinkt als je “soluut!” in plaats van “absoluut!” zou zeggen. Om het nog gecompliceerder te maken, gebruikte Vian veel Franse straattaal die Amerikaanse personages nooit zouden hebben gebruikt.

De oplossing voor dit probleem is het behoud van zoveel mogelijk Amerikaanse termen, soms zelfs door ze vanuit het Frans terug naar het Engels te vertalen. Gezien onze bekendheid met de Amerikaanse cultuur is dat vaak eenvoudiger dan bij het Frans van de jaren vijftig, waardoor de roman eerder Amerikaans dan Frans overkomt. Zo wordt de Nederlandse vertaler onderdeel van de grap die Boris Vian bijna zeventig jaar geleden uithaalde.
