"We, the Rom...": A study of Jan Yoors’s photography of Gypsies, from ca. 1934 to the 1970s.

"Wij, de Rom...". De fotografie van Jan Yoors, de geadopteerde zigeuner

In de lente van 1934, toen Jan Yoors amper 12 jaar oud was, trok een groep zigeuners door zijn thuisstad Berchem. Geïntrigeerd door de verhalen die zijn vader hem vertelde over dit “betoverende volk”, raapte Yoors zijn moed bijeen om het zigeunerkamp te benaderen. De volgende 6 jaar bracht hij de zomermaanden met zijn “zigeunerfamilie” door, met wie hij steeds door Europa rondtrok. Tegelijk beleefde Yoors de meest tumultueuze decennia van de 20eeeuw van heel dichtbij: het trauma dat de Tweede Wereldoorlog naliet, de snelle ontwikkelingen van de naoorlogse wereld en de dreiging van een nieuwe, allesvernietigende nucleaire oorlog vanaf de jaren 1960. Vanaf zijn eerste, prille ontmoeting met de zigeuners, tot zijn latere engagement in het verzet tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en zelfs zijn verhuis naar New York in 1950, leidde Yoors een uiterst bewogen bestaan. Hij documenteerde zijn vriendschap met de zigeuners in uitgebreide fotoreeksen om zijn verwantschap met hen te herinneren. Meer nog dan alleen herinnering, echter, is het ook mogelijk Jan Yoors’ fotografie vanuit een breder, antropologisch en artistiek perspectief te beschouwen.

Een tiener onder zijn vrienden

Al vanaf zijn eerste ontmoeting met de zigeuners legde Yoors zijn ervaringen vast met een Kodak Browniecamera. Zo kon hij zich zijn “adoptieouders” en vrienden, hun woonwagens en levensomstandigheden herinneren wanneer hij terugkeerde naar zijn geboortestreek tijdens de winter, of wanneer hij mogelijk voorgoed van hen gescheiden kon worden door de toenemende politieke spanningen. Yoors’ wens om persoonlijke momentopnames vast te leggen en herdenken, komt duidelijk naar voor in de manier waarop hij de foto’s bewaarde. Hij kleefde ze in een album (Fig. 2), waarin hij groepsportretten (Fig. 1), feesttaferelen (Fig. 3) en zelfs een “verlovingsportret” van zichzelf en het zigeunermeisje Djidjo (Fig. 4), verzamelde. Dit “familiealbum” illustreerde Yoors’ identiteit als lid van de zigeunerfamilie. Zo kon hij voor eeuwig zigeuner blijven, ondanks zijn terugkeer naar de Westerse samenleving.

Antifascistische fotografie

Toch gingen Yoors’ motieven om zijn zigeunerfamilie te fotograferen verder dan het louter vastleggen van persoonlijke souvenirs. Zo had hij vanaf de late jaren 1930 bijvoorbeeld contact met Frans Olbrechts, een vooraanstaand antropoloog en voorvechter van het cultureel relativisme. Dit gedachtengoed ging uit van de idee dat menselijke waarden en normen niet universeel gelden, maar begrepen moeten worden binnen hun eigen context, onafhankelijk van andere culturen. Olbrechts beschreef Yoors als een absolute kenner van de zigeunercultuur omwille van “de bijzondere ervaringen uit zijn jeugd”. Het is aannemelijk dat Yoors deze foto’s maakte en, in navolging van Olbrechts, handelde vanuit een onderliggend, misschien zelfs onbewust, cultureel-relativistisch perspectief. Zijn positie als insidervan de zigeunercultuur maakte hem bovendien bevoorrecht om de zigeuners in hun eigenheid en waardigheid te documenteren. Hij bracht hun dagelijkse levens in beeld en wilde zo begrip, tolerantie en respect oproepen bij een breder, “onwetend” publiek. In de context van de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de zigeunervervolging door de Nazi’s, is Yoors’ modern humanistische interesse zichtbaar. Op die manier zijn Yoors’ motieven vergelijkbaar met die van andere fotografen, zoals de bekende antifascistische fotograaf Roman Vishniac (1897-1990).

Nieuwe kansen in New York

In 1950 reisde Jan Yoors naar New York voor een journalistieke opdracht die oorspronkelijk maar 6 maanden zou duren. Met zijn gloednieuwe Pentax K1000 camera in de aanslag doorkruiste Yoors de metropool om de tradities en levensomstandigheden van verschillende minderheidsgroepen van Harlem tot Brooklyn te fotograferen (Fig. 5). Door zijn toenemende bekendheid en succes als Gypsy specialistbesloot hij de Amerikaanse stad voortaan als uitvalsbasis te gebruiken. Toch keerde hij regelmatig terug naar het Europese vasteland voor fotografisch onderzoek en reizen. Zo trok hij in 1959 door de Balkan op zoek naar de zigeunerfamilie uit zijn jeugd. Tijdens deze tocht door Griekenland, Turkije en Roemenië fotografeerde hij uitvoerig de verscheidenheid aan tradities en gebruiken van lokale zigeunerculturen (Fig. 6). Later reisde Yoors ook naar Zuid-Frankrijk, Spanje en India voor foto’s van zigeuners over de hele wereld. Hij verzamelde zijn bevindingen voor potentiële boeken en documentairefilms die de zigeuners’ levensstijl, feesten, klederdracht en folklore in alle authenticiteit uitdrukten. In die zin kenmerkte de fotografie uit deze New York Periodzich door een groeiend antropologisch engagement. Yoors’ zigeunerfoto’s evolueerden van persoonlijke herinneringen naar portrettenvan minderheidsgroepen met als doel hen te bewaren en te beschermen tegen de tand des tijds.

Een ode aan culturele diversiteit

Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog ontstond een context van cultureel protest tegen de Verenigde Naties en het onderliggende idee van het culturele universalisme, dat uitging van de gelijkheid van alle mensen. Kunstenaars en antropologen geloofden dat dit universalisme ten koste ging van de diversiteit en individualiteit van culturen. Dat gold ook voor Yoors, wiens fotografie de schoonheid en waarde van onbekende, onbegrepen en vaak genegeerde culturen wilde belichten. In zijn boek Only One New York(1965), pleitte hij aan de hand van zijn fotografie voor het behoud van culturele identiteit. Aansluitend bij het Amerikaanse existentialisme en de verwerping van de gecommercialiseerde naoorlogse wereld, boden Yoors’ foto’s ook een alternatief voor de geglobaliseerde massacultuur. Zijn engagement voor deze beweging leidde tot ontmoetingen met de meest vooraanstaande figuren van zijn tijd. Zo maakte hij deel uit van het artistieke milieu in Greenwich Village, waar hij de culturele problematiek besprak met onder andere de auteur Jack Kerouac en de schilder Jackson Pollock.

Het uitgebreide familiealbum

Ondanks zijn toenemende antropologisch-artistieke ambities en cultureel engagement, is het belangrijk om Yoors’ zigeunerfotografie blijvend te verbinden met zijn persoonlijke herinnering en identiteit. Op die manier is het mogelijk om Yoors’ gehele fotografische oeuvre te beschouwen als een familiealbum van zijn omvattende zigeunerfamilie, wiens cultuur diep wortelde in Yoors’ zelfbewustzijn. Zoals hij in 1967 zelf schreef: “Op een dag betrapte ik mezelf terwijl ik zei “Wij, de Rom…”, en besefte ik hoe groot mijn betrokkenheid met hen was geworden.” Om die reden is Jan Yoors’ zigeunerfotografie niet alleen een klankbord van zijn persoonlijkheid, artistieke motivaties en idealen, maar ook een uniek en exemplarisch voorbeeld van menselijk en cultureel respect en eerbied.
