Percolatiesensoren kunnen luchtvaartsector tot honderdduizenden euro’s per dag besparen

Vloeistoflekken goedkoop en nauwkeurig opsporen via Tijd Domein Reflectometrie

Van huishoudens tot de grootste bedrijven, overal komen vloeistoflekken voor. Torenhoge herstellingskosten en misgelopen inkomsten kunnen echter vermeden worden door vroegtijdig opsporen van het vloeistoflek. Momenteel zijn al nauwkeurige kabelsensoren op de markt beschikbaar, maar een te hoge kostprijs houdt hun gebruik op grote schaal tegen. 

In dit thesisonderzoek werd een goedkope percolatiesensor gecombineerd met Tijd Domein Reflectometrie (TDR). Zo werd detectie én lokalisatie van meerdere gelijktijdige vloeistoflekken mogelijk.

 

Waterlekken: klein begonnen, immense gevolgen 

Je hebt het ongetwijfeld zelf wel al eens meegemaakt: een lekkende kraan of een ondergelopen kelder na een hevige regenbui. Gelukkig blijven de gevolgen meestal beperkt tot wat kuiswerk, een paar natte voeten en in het ergste geval een telefoontje naar de verzekering. De gevolgen voor bedrijven zijn echter niet te onderschatten: onderbroken productie, dure herstellingen, om nog maar te zwijgen over mogelijke menselijke schade. De gemiddelde kost wordt wereldwijd op maar liefst 1-2,8 miljard euro per uur geschat. Vloeistoflekken vermijden is niet altijd mogelijk, maar de gevolgen beperken wel. Hoe dan?

Scheurtjes zijn het begin van alle problemen

Water kan via allerlei chemische reacties materialen aantasten. Dit heet corrosie, beter gekend als roest. Corrosie gaat gepaard met materiaalafname en eventueel vorming van putjes en scheurtjes. Als de aantasting te groot wordt, kan het materiaal breken. Dan verliest het zijn functie om een mechanische belasting te dragen. Dit leidt soms tot catastrofale gevolgen. Denk maar aan de onlangs ingestorte Morandi brug in Genua. Een goede opvolging van het vocht in het beton had deze tragedie waarschijnlijk kunnen vermijden.

Huidige vochtsensoren nauwkeurig, maar te duur

Momenteel bieden een handvol bedrijven kabelsensoren voor vochtdetectie aan. Hun grote nadeel is de hoge kostprijs (15-20 euro per meter). Dit belemmert de toepassing op grote schaal van dergelijke sensoren, zoals in kilometerslange pijpleidingen. Daarnaast kunnen deze sensoren slechts één waterlek tegelijkertijd detecteren.

Percolatiesensoren: een goedkoop alternatief

Sinds een tiental jaar ontwikkelt het Departement Materiaalkunde van de KU Leuven percolatiesensoren voor vloeistofdetectie. Bij percolatie verandert de elektrische geleidbaarheid van een materiaal plots heel sterk als het aantal geleidende deeltjes een bepaalde hoeveelheid overschrijdt. Vergelijk het met een spelletje waarbij je de andere kant van een diepe rivier met droge voeten moet bereiken. Hiervoor mag je enkel via stenen stappen. Deze stenen stellen de geleidende deeltjes voor en liggen willekeurig verspreid in het water. In het begin zijn het er nog te weinig. Wanneer het aantal stenen echter toeneemt, komen ze dicht genoeg bij elkaar te liggen en kan je de overtocht met droge voeten maken. Het elektron, dat ben jij eigenlijk, zorgt voor de elektrisch stroom. Wanneer de percolatiesensor vloeistof opneemt, wordt dit geleidende pad onderbroken en stijgt de elektrische weerstand tot wel een miljoen keer. Die plotse verandering waarschuwt dan voor een vloeistoflek.

Tijd Domein Reflectometrie voor detectie én lokalisatie

De percolatiesensor heeft als grote nadeel dat enkel detectie maar geen lokalisatie van het vloeistoflek mogelijk is. Daarom werd in dit thesisonderzoek de klassieke weerstandsmeting gecombineerd met Tijd Domein Reflectometrie (TDR). Hierbij worden elektrische pulsen langs de sensorkabel gestuurd. Bij elke verstoring, zoals door een vloeistoflek, wordt een deel van de puls gereflecteerd. Door de tijd op te meten tussen de uitgezonden en gereflecteerde puls kan de afstand tot het vloeistoflek bepaald worden. Dit is een gelijkaardig principe als de puls-echo methode die een radar gebruikt om vliegtuigen te lokaliseren.

Een voorbeeld: je staat met een vriend op een grasveld. Je gooit een bal, die de elektrische puls voorstelt, naar je vriend toe. Stel dat er zich plots een obstakel tussen jullie beiden bevindt. Dit is de invloed van het vloeistoflek op de weerstand. Je vriend zal de bal uiteraard niet langer kunnen vangen en weet zo dat er een obstakel is. Jijzelf ziet de teruggekaatste bal niet alleen sneller terugkomen, maar kan ook een schatting maken van hoe lang de bal onderweg was. Zo ken je ongeveer de locatie van het obstakel.

TDR combineerbaar met klassieke percolatiesensor

De ontwikkelde percolatiesensor heeft een diameter van slechts 3 mm en is opgebouwd uit goedkope materialen. Daarom wordt de prijs van de sensor op niet meer dan 3-4 euro per meter geschat. Dit is 4-5 keer goedkoper dan de huidige commerciële sensorenBovendien waren twee gelijktijdige vochtlekken duidelijk detecteerbaar én lokaliseerbaar. Dit was niet mogelijk met de huidige commerciële sensoren. Handige software werd ontworpen om de lokalisatie snel en nauwkeurig te laten verlopen. 

De interactie van de elektrische puls met de vochtplek is een complex fysisch fenomeen. Daarom werd er onderzocht op welke eigenschappen van de percolatiesensor het vloeistoflek invloed had. Via een aangepast wiskundig model kon op enkele procenten na nauwkeurig voorspeld worden hoe groot de gereflecteerde puls zou zijn.

Vliegtuigen: de gedroomde toepassing voor percolatiesensoren

Bij een groot onderhoud van een Airbus A319 passagiersvliegtuig zijn gemiddeld 32.000 euro kosten verbonden aan corrosie. Elke dag dat de Airbus aan de grond staat voor herstelling betekent bovendien ongeveer 100.000 euro misgelopen inkomsten. Momenteel is al een netwerk van de ontwikkelde percolatiesensoren geïntegreerd in de vloerstructuur van enkele vliegtuigen bij Brussels Airlines. Door regelmatig de weerstand op te meten, kan een waterlek gedetecteerd worden. Vervolgens wordt een klein onderhoud uitgevoerd. Op deze manier vermijdt men intensieve herstellingen door vergevorderde corrosie. 

Dankzij de combinatie van dit netwerk met de onderzochte TDR methode, is de benodigde lengte aan sensoren veel lager. Samen met de lage kost van de sensor maakt dit de percolatiesensor erg aantrekkelijk voor de luchtvaart. Bovendien werd een gelijkaardige sensor ontwikkeld om brandstoflekken op te sporen. Zo gaat de veiligheid enorm omhoog.

Besluit: percolatiesensoren in combinatie met TDR de goedkoopste oplossing voor opsporing van vloeistoflekken

TDR laat zowel snelle detectie als nauwkeurige lokalisatie van vloeistoflekken toe. Bovendien ligt de kostprijs 4-5 keer lager dan de huidige commerciële sensoren. Deze technologie is klaar om op grote schaal in de luchtvaartsector toegepast te worden. Wanneer je een volgende keer het vliegtuig neemt, waken deze percolatiesensoren misschien wel over je veiligheid. Hoop je dat niet?
