The Discourse of a Conflict: Critical Discourse Analysis of the Ideological Representation of the Other in Online News Aljazeera and Alarabiya on the 2017-18 GCC Crisis: a case study

Hoe leggen de media ons het complexe Midden-Oosten uit?

Saoedi-Arabië tegenover Qatar in de Golfcrisis… en in de media.

Het Midden-Oosten: begrijpt u er nog iets van? Dagelijks komt die onrustige regio in het nieuws met complexe nieuwe ontwikkelingen in nog complexere conflicten en crises. Het is moeilijk de verschillende verhoudingen tussen de partijen uit elkaar te houden en nog moeilijker de volgende ontwikkelingen te voorzien. Er zijn veel internationale spelers met uiteenlopende belangen.

Hoe kunnen wij dan die ingewikkelde conflicten en crises begrijpen?

De nieuwsmedia lijken daarvoor geknipt. Dagelijks zenden talloze medianetwerken nieuwsberichten de wereld in. Maar de media worden vaak verweten politiek gekleurd te zijn, en de lezer bepaalde ideeën over een nieuwsfeit op te dringen. In België is dat zo, in de rest van de wereld is dat niet anders. Maar in welke mate kleuren de nieuwsmedia dan de gebeurtenissen in het Midden-Oosten? En hoe?

Om die moeilijke vraag te beantwoorden dienen we een bepaalde crisis te kiezen en te onderzoeken, zoals de Golfcrisis van 2017-2018. Begin juni 2017 verbroken Saoedi-Arabië, Bahrein, de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten en Egypte alle diplomatieke en politieke contacten met buurland Qatar. Andere landen in de regio volgden al snel en beschuldigden Qatar financiële steun te bieden aan terroristische organisaties en zo het vredesproces in het Midden-Oosten te boycotten. Eveneens sloot Saoedi-Arabië de enige Qatarese landsgrens, alsook het luchtruim, waardoor vluchten van Qatar Airways tot vandaag vertraging oplopen.

Welke impact heeft deze crisis eigenlijk?

Sinds de jaren ’80 van de vorige eeuw werken de golfstaten Saoedi-Arabië, Bahrein, Koeweit, de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten, Oman en Qatar samen in de GCC: de Gulf Cooperation Council. Die organisatie kan vergeleken worden met de Europese Unie, waarin de zes golfstaten proberen meer samenwerking op economisch, sociaal, cultureel en politiek vlak te verzekeren. Dankzij hun olievelden zijn de golfstaten zeer welvarend, en zijn ze samen een van ’s werelds grootste economische spelers. Een totaal conflict in de Arabische Golf kan dus rampzalig zijn voor de wereldeconomie.

Saoedi-Arabië en co beschuldigen Qatar dus van staatssteun aan terreurorganisaties in Syrië, Jemen, Libië, Irak, … maar Qatar ontkent dat. Het is meteen duidelijk dat de twee landen lijnrecht tegenover elkaar staan. Ze hebben andere ideeën over het vredesproces in de regio, steunen beide andere staten en regimes, en hebben een andere toekomstvisie. In de media kunnen we een beeld krijgen van die twee verschillende ideologieën.

Tegenstrijdige ideologieën in de media

Om terug te komen op de vraag die hierboven werd gesteld (In welke mate en hoe kleuren de nieuwsmedia hun nieuwsberichten?) moet de berichtgeving worden geanalyseerd. Daarvoor selecteren onderzoekers een aantal nieuwsartikelen rond een bepaald thema (de GCC-crisis) van een of meer nieuwsnetwerken. Om goed het verschil te zien tussen de berichtgeving van de twee kampen in het conflict werd in dit onderzoek zowel een Saoedisch als een Qatarees netwerk gekozen: Alarabiya voor Saoedi-Arabië en het iets bekendere Aljazeera voor Qatar. Na een uitgebreide analyse op verschillende vlakken viel het op dat elk netwerk andere informatie benadrukt, terwijl ze bepaalde aspecten van de crisis opvallend onderbelichten. Het opvallendste voorbeeld was dat Alarabiya zei dat de Qatarese economie zware klappen kreeg door de crisis, terwijl Aljazeera volhield dat Qatar’s economie sterk genoeg is om de crisis te overleven.

Het onderzoek heeft mooi aangetoond hoe de media een bericht zo kunnen bewerken dat het de lezer een bepaalde richting geeft. Het spoort ons aan steeds kritisch te zijn over wat we lezen en de media van de tegenpartij door te nemen om zo een vollediger, genuanceerder beeld van de situatie te krijgen. Dat kan ons helpen de bomen door het complexe Midden-Oosters bos te zien.
