Landschapsverandering in het Hageland: extinctieschuld en kolonisatiekrediet van plantensoorten in semi-natuurlijke habitattypes

Hoe het verleden vandaag nog steeds Hagelandse hooilanden en heidegebieden beïnvloedt.

Vlaamse natuurgebieden zijn vaak klein en versnipperd en dit verhindert de opbouw en duurzame ondersteuning van leefbare populaties van planten en dieren.  Bovendien reageren vooral plantensoorten erg traag op de versnippering van hun leefgebied, wat resulteert in het aanwezig blijven van soorten in gebieden, waar ze op termijn toch zullen verdwijnen. We onderzochten in welke mate dit fenomeen een rol speelt in semi-natuurlijke habitattypes in het Hageland.

Struikheide op de schrale ijzerzandsteenheuvel van de Beninksberg in Wezemaal, waar op de zuidhelling nog een belangrijk heiderelict aanwezig is.

Gevolgen van habitatversnippering

Het Hageland ligt in het noordoosten van Vlaams-Brabant, en wordt gekenmerkt door de Diestiaanheuvels met ijzerzandsteen. Dit geeft aanleiding tot vrij mineraalrijke zandleembodems met soortenrijke graslanden en heides. Net zoals in de rest van West-Europa zijn deze habitats echter door verschillende menselijke activiteiten verloren gegaan, in grootte afgenomen en gefragmenteerd. Dit heeft geleid tot het regionaal uitsterven of sterk afnemen van kenmerkende plantensoorten. Vaak bevinden de enige relictpopulaties zich bovendien in wegbermen die sterk onderhevig zijn aan toevalsprocessen. De sterk verhoogde isolatie en bijgevolg verminderde genetische uitwisseling tussen deze overblijvende relictpopulaties leidt tot een daling van de genetische diversiteit. Genetische diversiteit is net essentieel om een populatie in staat te stellen om zich aan te passen en te overleven onder sterk veranderende en negatieve omgevingsinvloeden. Anderzijds ondervinden kleinere gebieden meer randinvloeden en vermindert de kwaliteit van de leefomgeving door bijvoorbeeld eutrofiëring. Dit alles zorgt voor een verminderde rekrutering in populaties. Bij sommige populaties of soorten leidt dit rechtstreeks tot extinctie, bijvoorbeeld bij eenjarige planten die steunen op rekrutering om de populatie jaar na jaar in stand te houden. Bij meerjarige of klonaal vermeerderende planten kan een ander proces optreden, namelijk extinctieschuld. Dit fenomeen van uitgestelde extinctie houdt in dat de soortenrijkdom hoger is dan verwacht zou mogen worden op basis van de grootte, isolatiegraad en kwaliteit van het habitat.

Aan de andere kant worden de laatste jaren veel initiatieven tot herstelmaatregelen genomen. Deze natuurherstelwerkzaamheden zijn echter niet altijd even succesvol. Voor veel sleutelsoorten is er vaak geen zaadbank (oude plantenzaden die nog in de bodem aanwezig zijn) meer aanwezig en geldt er bovendien een belangrijke verbreidingslimitatie. Hierdoor is het mogelijk dat geschikte gebieden toch “leeg” blijven. Deze gebieden vertonen een zogenaamd kolonisatiekrediet.

Het Hagelandse landschap door de eeuwen heen

Door middel van het digitaliseren van historisch kaartmateriaal, gaande van de Ferrariskaart uit 1775 tot moderne satellietbeelden, hebben we de landschapswijzigingen in het Hageland doorheen de voorbije eeuwen ontleed. Uit deze analyse blijkt dat de oppervlakte van zowel bos, hooiland en heide sinds 1775 sterk afnam. In de Middelleeuwen domineerden uitgestrekte hooilanden de Hagelandse valleien, ten gevolge van het toenmalig pastoraal economische systeem. Op de Diestiaanheuvels ontwikkelden zich daarentegen heidegebieden, een gevolg van begrazing en bodemuitputting. Na 1775 vond zowel een oppervlakte-afname als fragmentatie plaats, en zijn grote oppervlaktes natuurlijk habitat omgezet in landbouwgrond door de toenemende bevolkingsdruk. In de 20e eeuw werden de overblijvende hooiland- en heidegebieden daarenboven verder bedreigd door spontane verbossing als gevolg van het stopzetten van beheer. Samen met populieraanplantingen heeft dit geleid tot het terug toenemen van de bosoppervlakte vanaf 1960.

Is er extinctieschuld of kolonisatiekrediet aanwezig in het Hageland?

Om extinctieschuld of kolonisatiekrediet te detecteren in semi-natuurlijke habitattypes bepaalden we de huidige soortenrijkdom voor verschillende hooiland-, heide- en bosfragmenten. De huidige soortenrijkdom relateerden we aan de huidige en historische oppervlaktes van elk fragment, om vervolgens vast te stellen in welk jaar het beste verband bestaat tussen de huidige soortenrijkdom en de oppervlakte.

We stelden vast dat de huidige soortenrijkdom in heide- en hooilandfragmenten het best verklaard wordt door de historische oppervlaktes. De huidige soortenrijkdom van de fragmenten weerspiegelt immers het historische landschap, en niet het huidige. Hooiland- en heidehabitats zijn relatief recent, sinds de 19e eeuw, plots in oppervlakte afgenomen, waardoor de samenstelling van plantensoorten zich hieraan nog niet kon aanpassen. We verwachten bijgevolg dat het uitsterven van meerdere soorten zich nog moet voltrekken.

Voor bosfragmenten vonden we geen duidelijke indicatie van extinctieschuld, wat te verklaren is doordat de ontbossing in het studiegebied reeds geruime tijd geleden startte, vanaf de 11e eeuw, en een eventuele extinctieschuld ondertussen al afbetaald is. Vooral bij recent ontstane bossen vonden we echter wel kolonisatiekrediet en dus een lagere soortenrijkdom dan verwacht zou mogen worden op basis van de fragmentoppervlakte. Dit wijst op het enorme belang van oude bossen en de nood aan het realiseren van verbindingen met jonge bossen om de verbreiding van typische bossoorten te faciliteren.

Hoe is het gesteld met de overblijvende relictpopulaties?

In een tweede luik evalueerden we de leefbaarheid van een aantal Hagelandse relictpopulaties aan de hand van het kiemsucces, zowel onder optimale omstandigheden in een serre, als onder veldomstandigheden. We hebben hiervoor een herintroductie-experiment opgezet op vijf verschillende locaties in het Hageland: de Beninksberg en de Wijngaardberg in Rotselaar, de Eikelberg in Gelrode, de Chartreuzenberg in Holsbeek en het Walenbos in Tielt-Winge. Voorbeelden van de onderzochte soorten zijn Blauwe knoop, Grasklokje, Grote tijm, en Betonie. Voor de meeste soorten vonden we dat hoe groter de populatie was, hoe hoger het kiempercentage. In het experiment werd ook het kiemsucces van zogenaamde mengpopulaties onderzocht. Deze mengpopulaties zijn het resultaat van kruisingen tussen verschillende natuurlijke populaties, waardoor deze waarschijnlijk een grotere genetische diversiteit herbergen. Deze vertoonden duidelijk hogere kiempercentages dan natuurlijke populaties van dezelfde grootte, zowel onder laboratorium- als onder veldomstandigheden.
Blauwe knoop in een vochtig soortenrijk hooiland nabij het kasteel van Horst in Sint-Pieters-Rode. Deze soort is enkel nog te vinden in goed beheerde bermen of in natuurreservaten.
Dit alles wijst op het belang van het behoud van grote en genetisch diverse populaties. Kleine populaties verliezen immers genetische variatie, wat hen minder in staat stelt om te kunnen omgaan met negatieve omgevingsinvloeden. Om het uitsterven van hooiland- en heidesoorten te verhinderen, is herstel en het voorkomen van verder habitatverlies noodzakelijk. Daarnaast is, door de weinig persistente zaadbank van vele soorten en de beperkte zaadverbreiding in ons momenteel versnipperde landschap, het handhaven van grote populaties of mengpopulaties waarschijnlijk de enige oplossing om langdurige overleving van deze soorten te garanderen. Hierbij kan na het herstel van geschikt habitat, de herintroductie van zaden of opgekweekte planten van naburige lokale relictpopulaties of mengpopulaties noodzakelijk zijn om populaties van doelsoorten te herstellen.
