De kijk van de Vlaamse atleet op de Vlaamse sportjournalistiek

Vlaamse atleten over de wondere wereld van de selectieve sportpers

“Sportjournalisten moeten eens beginnen met wat meer hun mond te houden”. Zo klinkt het bij één van de sporters die geïnterviewd werd in het kader van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek door Loes Reynaert. Zij deed onderzoek naar de kijk van Vlaamse atleten op de Vlaamse sportmedia.

In het kader van dit onderzoek nam Reynaert tien interviews af met atleten uit diverse sportdisciplines, waaronder Ann Wauters, Ulla Werbrouck en Frederik Van Lierde. Tijdens de interviews peilde ze naar de persoonlijke visie op verscheidene facetten van de sportpers. De meningen van de atleten-respondenten liepen vanzelfsprekend uiteen, maar de vraag was of er een lijn te trekken viel in de opinies van de atleten naargelang hun status binnen hun sport of de populariteit van de sport an sich binnen het Vlaamse sportmedialandschap.

Sportredactie speelredactie

Sportjournalistiek heeft geen al te prestigieuze naam binnen de onderzoekswereld. Vooral in de Angelsaksische landen, Groot Brittannië op kop, is er weinig aanzien voor noch vertrouwen in de sportpers. Naast haar onprofessioneel karakter, wordt de sportjournalistiek verweten geen serieuze en maatschappelijk relevante topics aan te snijden. Uit het onderzoek van Reynaert, dat zich weliswaar enkel toespitst op de Vlaamse sportpers, blijkt de reputatie van de journalisten opmerkelijk beter te zijn. De atleten-respondenten zijn in globo lovend voor de kwaliteit en de aanpak van de Vlaamse sportpers, in het bijzonder voor Sporza. Niettemin spuien ze ook met heel wat kritiek, waarbij ook dit sportkanaal het moet ontgelden. Een illustratie van deze kritiek is volgend citaat: “Is het niet de verantwoordelijkheid van de openbare omroep om toch ook die minder populaire sporten iets meer in beeld te brengen?”.

Sportwereld mannenwereld

Tot op de dag van vandaag heerst er nog steeds een symbolische connectie tussen mannen en sport. Vrouwen zijn ondergewaardeerd in de sportwereld, en dat zowel op het niveau van media-aandacht als op het niveau van de sportjournalistiek zelf. Uit dit onderzoek bleek andermaal hoe hoog het testosterongehalte is op het scherm, in de krant en op de sportredactie. Vrouwensporten behoren vaak tot de categorie niet-mediasporten, terwijl de mannelijke tegenhanger de pers als het ware van zich af moet slaan. Als vrouwensporten al in de media komen, is het meestal een mannelijke journalist die hier verantwoordelijk voor gesteld is, zo blijkt uit de interviews. ‘Het bewustzijn’ van deze ongelijke verdeling is een noodzakelijke voorwaarde om een einde te maken aan deze onevenwichtige situatie waarbij vooroordelen en tradities overboord zullen moeten gegooid worden. Hiervan is echter amper sprake bij de atleten-respondenten.

Commerciële sportmedia

In de sportwereld gaan er onredelijke bedragen om. De atleten-respondenten maken echter duidelijk dat dit allesbehalve voor alle sporten geldt, ondanks de minstens even grote inspanningen die ze moeten doen voor hun carrière. Het financiële aspect is onlosmakelijk verbonden met de visibiliteit van de sport in de pers. Alle atleten-respondenten zijn zich bewust van deze afhankelijkheidsrelatie tussen sport en media die door het financiële toedoen in een vicieuze cirkel beland is. “Het is vaak het verhaal van de kip en het ei hé. Komen ze veel in beeld, dan gaat er veel geld mee gepaard. Gaat er veel geld mee gepaard, dan komen ze veel in beeld.” De immense kloof tussen mediasporten en niet-mediasporten lijkt op deze manier alleen maar uitgediept te worden, tot frustratie van de atleten die uit dergelijke onderbelichte sporten komen.
