De invloed van islam-framing op de identificatieprocessen en het nieuwsmediagebruik van Vlaamse jongvolwassenen met een Marokkaanse achtergrond

Jongeren met Marokkaanse roots blijven Vlaamse media trouw

Vlaamse jongeren met Marokkaanse roots hebben ontzettend weinig vertrouwen in de pers. Dat concludeert alumnus Communicatiewetenschappen Anouk Torbeyns (24) uit haar thesisonderzoek. Dat wantrouwen zorgt er onder meer voor dat de jongeren zich meer terugplooien op hun Marokkaanse cultuur of islamitisch geloof. Het zorgt er opvallend genoeg niet voor dat jongeren met Marokkaanse roots de media de rug keren.

Onder impuls van de terreuraanslagen wereldwijd staan moslimjongeren in de Westerse samenleving wel vaker in het oog van de mediastorm. Jaarlijks duiken ook de discussies over het ritueel slachten of de boerkini op. De vraag of islam al dan niet compatibel is met zogenaamde Westerse waarden staat dan centraal. De vraag hoe jongeren met een Marokkaanse of islamitische achtergrond omgaan met dat soort nieuws, wordt minder vaak gesteld.

Nochtans rijst de vraag of negatief nieuws over jongeren met een migratieachtergrond niet contraproductief is voor hun integratie. Volgens de Amerikaanse politicoloog Robert Putnam speelt nieuwsvergaring een belangrijke rol in de socialisatie van haar nieuwsgebruikers. Nieuwsmedia kunnen bijdragen tot wederzijds maatschappelijk vertrouwen tussen verschillende bevolkingsgroepen. Maar wat als nieuwsmedia het wederzijds wantrouwen alleen maar aanwakkert?

Aan de hand van diepte-interviews en een online survey onderzocht Anouk Torbeyns enerzijds welke impact islam-nieuws heeft op de manier waarop jongeren met Marokkaanse roots zich identificeren: als Belg/Vlaming, Marokkaan, moslim, …? Anderzijds onderzocht ze welke invloed die berichtgeving heeft op hun mediagebruik. “De resultaten lagen lang niet altijd in lijn met de verwachtingen”, aldus Torbeyns.

Stigmatisering

“Eerder onderzoek heeft al meermaals uitgewezen dat jongeren met allochtone roots niet tevreden zijn met de manier waarop ze worden ge(re)presenteerd in nieuwsmedia. Dat is alleszins niets nieuws onder de zon. Jongeren met Marokkaanse wortels hebben het gevoel dat moslims en Vlamingen met Marokkaanse roots worden gestigmatiseerd door verschillende media”, zegt KU Leuven-alumnus.

“De respondenten waren niet eensgezind over de voorspelde toekomst van de nieuwsframes”, zegt Torbeyns. “Sommigen vrezen dat het van kwaad naar erger zal gaan en dat media het huidige anti-islam-sentiment alleen maar zal voeden. Anderen zijn dan weer optimistischer en roepen andere jongeren met een migratieachtergrond op om het heft in eigen handen te nemen en zelf voor verandering te zorgen.”

“Die negatieve nieuwsrecepties wekken alleszins een gevoel van discriminatie op. Daardoor zullen jongeren zich eerder terugplooien op hun etnisch-religieuze identiteit”, vervolgt Torbeyns. “Als je het gevoel hebt niet volledig geaccepteerd te worden door een groep, bijvoorbeeld door de autochtone Vlamingen, ga je je vastklampen aan een andere groep waar je je wel gewaardeerd voelt. In dit geval zal dat een Marokkaanse of moslimgemeenschap zijn.”

Geen of-of-verhaal

Dat de jongeren zich terugplooien op hun etnisch-culturele identiteit heeft weliswaar niet per se een invloed op hun nationalistisch gevoel. Wie zich meer moslim of Marokkaan voelt, voelt zich niet automatisch minder Belg. “Het is geen of-of-verhaal”, nuanceert Anouk Torbeyns. “Wie zich echter sterk gediscrimineerd voelt, zal zich wel meer afzetten van zijn of haar Belgische identiteit.”

“Omdat deze generatie hier geboren en getogen is, voelen ze zich vaak niet uitsluitend Belg, Marokkaan of moslim”, gaat de Master in de Communicatiewetenschappen verder. “Die dynamische identiteit zorgt weleens voor dilemma’s. Zo krijgen jonge Belgen met Marokkaanse roots niet enkel af te rekenen met kritiek van autochtonen. Als ze niet gelovig zijn, of althans niet praktiserend, stuiten ze ook op kritiek vanuit de eigen gemeenschap. Voor sommigen betekent het dat ze overal bij horen, voor anderen dat ze zich nergens echt thuisvoelen.”

Alternatieve media

De jongeren in deze studie uitten meermaals hun ongenoegen over de media. Toch blijven ze de Vlaamse mainstream media trouw. “Dat had ik niet meteen verwacht”, geeft Anouk Torbeyns toe. “Voor sommigen is hun ongenoegen net de reden waarom ze de media nauwlettend in het oog blijven houden. Ze willen checken of er geen onwaarheden worden verkondigd.”

Zijn er dan nieuwsmediakanalen waar jongeren met Marokkaanse roots zich niet blauw aan ergeren? “Die vinden ze vooral online”, weet Torbeyns. “Alternatieve nieuws – of blogwebsites als De Wereld Morgen, Kif Kif of Mvslim zijn populair onder jonge mensen. Ze bieden alleszins een tegengewicht of op z’n minst een andere kant van het verhaal.”

Representativiteit

Tot slot rijst de vraag of de resultaten van deze thesis representatief zijn. “Er kan geen uitspraak gedaan worden over de representativiteit van het onderzoek”, is Anouk Torbeyns realistisch. “Omdat er in België geen officiële cijfers bestaan over de etnisch-culturele achtergrond van haar burgers, is de werkelijke populatie Vlamingen met Marokkaanse roots niet gekend. Ik wéét dus simpelweg niet of de resultaten representatief zijn.”

Toch was deze scriptie zeker waardevol, vindt Torbeyns. “Zo’n 300 respondenten vulden de online survey in. De resultaten geven toch al een ruimere blik op de nieuwspercepties en identificatieprocessen van de doelgroep. 300 is lang niet slecht voor een groep die doorgaans niet altijd even makkelijk te bereiken valt. Tijdens de diepte-interviews kreeg ik de kans om eens niet over, maar mét de jongeren met allochtone roots te praten. Voor beide partijen ongetwijfeld een verademing”, besluit Anouk Torbeyns.
