Van paraplu tot architecturaal hoogstandje

Toen ik een kind was, maakte ik soms een kamp in huis met alle paraplu’s die ik kon vinden. Ik stapelde ze naast en op elkaar als de sneeuwblokken in een iglo. Een dergelijk kamp zou best aangenaam kunnen zijn, tenminste als je de stelen van de paraplu’s buiten beschouwing laat. De voornaamste reden waarom ik zo’n hut bouwde, was dat het razendsnel ging. Een paraplu hoef je gewoonweg maar te openen, waarna het systeem wordt geblokkeerd en het scherm regen en een vleugje wind kan weerstaan. Zonder me er bewust van te zijn, kwam ik op dat moment in aanraking met een van de vele toepassingen van bistabiele uitvouwbare structuren.

Net zoals ik toen, heeft u ongetwijfeld ook al ontelbare uitvouwbare structuren gezien zonder het goed en wel te beseffen. Denk maar aan opvouwbare feesttenten en luifels, schaarliften, opvouwbare hekken… Maar waarom verdienen deze uitvouwbare structuren onze aandacht? Wat maakt deze structuren zo interessant?

Een nieuwe kijk op bouwen: snel en aanpasbaar

Zou het niet handig zijn als onze alledaagse bouwstructuren een beetje meer leken op dat paraplukamp dat ik vroeger maakte? Dat we in onze snel veranderende samenleving over structuren zouden beschikken die aanpasbaar zijn en snel en gemakkelijk kunnen worden opgesteld en verwijderd? In deze tijd waarin de mobiliteit van mensen en goederen is toegenomen, zijn statische gebouwen die ontworpen zijn voor een specifiek doel langzaamaan achterhaald.

Tot nu toe worden uitvouwbare structuren vooral gebruikt in de ruimtevaartindustrie, zoals uitvouwbare masten en satellietelementen. Daar is het belangrijk dat de structuren licht en compact zijn tijdens het transport. In de bouwindustrie kunnen ze worden gebruikt als tijdelijke, mobiele structuren zoals noodopvang bij natuurrampen, uitvouwbare daken, expositie en recreatieve structuren. Ook in de speelgoedindustrie zijn er voorbeelden te vinden. Denk maar aan de Hoberman Sphere, een uitvouwbare bal die opgevouwen slechts 24 cm in doorsnede is en uitgevouwen 76 cm.

De knipbeweging als drijvend mechanisme

Een interessante deelverzameling van uitvouwbare structuren zijn schaarstructuren die kunnen worden omschreven als een combinatie van verschillende schaareenheden. Deze schaareenheden, de naam zegt het zelf, werken als een gewone schaar. Door een knipbeweging kan de schaar geopend en gesloten worden. Dit komt doordat een schaar bestaat uit twee delen die met elkaar verbonden zijn in een scharnierpunt dat een rotatie toelaat. Bijgevolg zijn schaarstructuren in de gesloten toestand heel compact, terwijl er in de geopende toestand een groot volume gecreëerd wordt.

Schaarstructuur (Transformactive).

Naast de snelheid en het gemak om schaarstructuren uit te vouwen, hebben dergelijke structuren nog een andere belangrijke functie. Elke structuur moet namelijk een last kunnen dragen. Een structuur moet bestand zijn tegen regen, sneeuw en wind, en moet een bepaald gewicht kunnen dragen. In schaarstructuren wordt hiervoor meestal een scharnier geblokkeerd zodat het systeem tijdelijk vast komt te staan. Dit ‘blokkeren’ van de structuur, waarvoor externe manipulatie nodig is, kan vermeden worden door gebruik te maken van een bistabiele uitvouwbare structuur.

Laat de structuur voor u werken

Bistabiel wil zeggen dat een structuur twee stabiele toestanden heeft. Denk maar aan de reflecterende klaparmbanden die zich automatisch oprollen. Deze armbanden zijn stabiel in de platte en opgerolde toestand. In het geval van uitvouwbare structuren wordt met de twee stabiele toestanden de gesloten en de uitgevouwen toestand bedoeld. De paraplu’s van het paraplukamp dat ik vroeger maakte, zijn hier een voorbeeld van. Een paraplu is stabiel wanneer hij gesloten of geopend is. In de open toestand heeft een paraplu geen externe manipulatie nodig om geopend te blijven, wat betekent dat hij onmiddellijk lasten kan dragen. Een ander voorbeeld zijn de kampeertenten van Quechua die in enkele seconden opgezet kunnen worden door ze in de lucht te gooien.

In het geval van schaarstructuren betekent een stabiele toestand dat alle staven recht zijn. Dit houdt in dat de staven van een bistabiele schaarstructuur recht zijn in de dichtgevouwen toestand, maar tijdens het uitvouwen verandert de geometrie van de structuur waardoor er druk ontstaat op sommige staven en deze buigen. Hierna ‘klikt’ de structuur in zijn uitgevouwen toestand, waarin de staven opnieuw recht zijn. Dit principe zorgt ervoor dat de geopende structuur onmiddellijk krachten kan weerstaan.

De uitdaging: het complexe ontwerp

Ondanks alle voordelen die bistabiele schaarstructuren te bieden hebben, zijn er nog maar weinig gerealiseerd. Dit komt doordat het ontwerp ervan complex is. Enerzijds is het geometrisch ontwerp moeilijk omdat er rekening moet gehouden worden met wiskundige principes die verzekeren dat de staven van de structuur recht zijn in de gesloten en geopende toestand. Anderzijds is het structurele ontwerp ingewikkeld omdat het structurele gedrag van bistabiele schaarstructuren tijdens het uitvouwen gekenmerkt wordt door een veranderende geometrie en gebogen staven, waardoor gesofisticeerde computermodellen nodig zijn.

Het belangrijkste doel van dit werk was de ontwikkeling van een structureel computermodel om het gedrag tijdens het uitvouwen van bistabiele schaarstructuren beter te begrijpen. Vertrekkend van een vereenvoudigde structuur, werd het computermodel in verschillende fasen verfijnd en de invloed van de belangrijkste ontwerpparameters onderzocht. Omdat onvolkomenheden onvermijdelijk plaatsvinden door fabricagefouten, werd hun invloed bestudeerd. De bedoeling was om de belangrijkste onvolkomenheden te identificeren en een draagwijdte te definiëren voor toleranties. Door computermodellen te ontwikkelen, kunnen we het complex gedrag van bistabiele schaarstructuren beter begrijpen. Dit is een vereiste om praktische toepassingen te ontwerpen.

Redder in nood

Toen ik vroeger mijn paraplukamp bouwde, was het de bedoeling om vlot en efficiënt een hut te bouwen. In onze snel veranderende samenleving hebben we behoefte aan dergelijke structuren die snel en gemakkelijk kunnen worden opgesteld en verwijderd. Bistabiele schaarstructuren zijn hiervoor doeltreffend omdat ze, zoals mijn vroegere paraplukamp, direct kunnen worden uitgevouwen en onmiddellijk lasten kunnen dragen. Met dit werk zijn we een stap dichter bij het realiseren van zulke structuren. Wie weet redden ze binnenkort levens na een natuurramp.
