Bloggers zorgen voor ommekeer in de internationale fashionsector

Fashionbloggers winnen steeds meer aan populariteit. Voor sommigen is deze hobby uitgegroeid tot een voltijdse job. Anderen zetten nog een stap verder en werken zich op tot belangrijke informatiebron bij internationale kledingmerken. Fashionretailers doen er goed aan deze groep online influencers aan te wenden, om hun internationale positie te versterken. Bloggers weten namelijk meer over de consument dan men denkt.    

 

Big blogger is watching you

Er is geen ontkomen meer aan, op elke modeshow of hip evenement zijn ze aanwezig. Het aantal hippe jonge mensen die hun volgers op het internet tippen over de nieuwste kledingtrends, groeit met de dag, net zoals hun professionaliteit. Voor de besten onder hen is het een voltijdse baan. Deze fashionbloggers worden tegenwoordig vooral ingezet door kledingmerken als een marketingkanaal om zoveel mogelijk potentiële consumenten te bereiken.

Bloggers staan bekend als ‘one of the people’. Lezers beschouwen de blogger als een vriend of vriendin. Hierdoor ontstaat er veelvuldige communicatie en interactie tussen volger en blogger. De fashionblogger verkrijgt via deze weg veel informatie over de culturele gebruiken en specifieke voorkeuren van een bepaalde doelgroep, op een meer informele en aangenamere manier dan de klassieke consumentenenquêtes. Denk hierbij aan een bepaald kledingitem dat helemaal ‘hot’ is onder jonge twintigers. Bovendien wordt elke ‘klik’ en ‘like’ op het internet geregistreerd. Voor fashionbloggers is het gemakkelijk om via de statistieken van hun blog allerlei gegevens te verzamelen zoals leeftijd, woonplaats, geslacht… maar soms ook het inkomen van de lezers.

 

De (onbereikbare) jeugd van tegenwoordig

Kledingmerken ondervinden tegenwoordig moeilijkheden met het bereiken van hun jongere doelgroepen. Er is een generatie ontstaan die geen televisie meer kijkt of magazines koopt. Interactie aangaan met deze consumenten is niet eenvoudig, en het marketingbudget dreigt verloren te gaan aan ineffectieve reclame en duur consumentenonderzoek. Fashionbloggers daarentegen zijn specifiek gericht op deze doelgroep van 16- tot 35-jarigen. Ze voeren conversaties met hun lezers over wat in de mode is en wat deze groep leuk vindt. Uit dit onderzoek van KU Leuven met drie fashionbloggers en drie fashionretailers is gebleken dat bloggers up-to-date informatie kunnen verschaffen over wat de klant effectief in de kledingrekken wil terugvinden en wie de potentiële consumenten zijn. Indien een kledingmerk de verkoop zou willen uitbreiden naar het buitenland, kunnen bloggers een goede indicatie geven over wat de plaatselijke consument nu écht wil.

 

Blogger en kledingmerk vormen coalitie

Dankzij deze kennis zijn fashionbloggers in staat enkele klassieke concepten uit te sluiten in de internationale fashionsector. Gewoonlijk doen fashionretailers beroep op een international agent als ze toegang willen krijgen tot de buitenlandse markt. Deze tussenpersoon geeft de fashionretailer informatie over onder andere de plaatselijke consument of distributiekanalen. Dit onderzoek wees uit dat fashionbloggers ook in staat zijn ondersteuning te bieden aan fashionretailers bij het toetreden tot een nieuwe markt. Bloggers doen dit door het verschaffen van informatie omtrent de karakteristieken en voorkeuren van de doelgroep. Bedrijven maken daarbij gebruik van co-creation. Fashionblogger en kledingmerk ontwikkelen samen een collectie die een specifieke nieuwe doelgroep zal aanspreken. Daarnaast blijven fashionbloggers een cruciale marketingstrategie die voor naamsbekendheid en populariteit zorgt in een nieuwe markt.    

 

Wat brengt de toekomst?

Fashionbloggers kunnen veel, maar ook zij hebben hun beperkingen. Waar de international agent fashionretailers ook helpt in het zoeken naar de juiste distributiekanalen, is een blogger hier niet toe in staat. Ze zijn hier simpelweg niet voor opgeleid. De komst van de fashionbloggers zorgt dus niet voor de totale verdwijning van klassieke concepten zoals het inzetten van een international agent. Maar door de sterke capaciteiten op consumentenkennis en internationale marketing en communicatie, kan gesteld worden dat bloggers een grote rol van betekenis kunnen vervullen. In de toekomst is het mogelijk dat de taak van de international agent zich eerder zal toespitsen op formele nationale zaken zoals wetgeving; aspecten die bloggers niet kunnen invullen. Bloggers zullen steeds meer een belangrijke bron van input en output vormen voor de meer creatievere domeinen tijdens de internationalisatie. De focus van de agent zal dus minder liggen op marketing en consumentenidentificatie.
