Een gezonde geest in een gezond lichaam

Gezondheid is ‘hot’. Meer sporten, gezonder eten, minder alcohol en dergelijke zijn boodschappen waar de gemiddelde student niet meer langs kan kijken. Een gezond lichaam is niet enkel goed voor je zelfvertrouwen maar kan ook je studieprestaties verbeteren. Talrijke politici gebruiken deze argumenten om gezondheid op school te promoten. Maar zijn deze argumenten ook waar?

Gezond zijn, wat is dat?

We moeten allemaal gezonder worden of dat wordt toch gezegd. Maar wat is nu gezond? Iemand die zijn bed niet meer uit kan omdat hij meer dan 200 kilogram weegt is overduidelijk ongezond. Maar in de realiteit komt dit soort van uiterste minder snel voor. Een subtieler onderscheid in gezondheidskenmerken moet dus gemaakt worden.

Obesitas of overgewicht is natuurlijk een variabele dat niet kan ontbreken. Iedereen kent wel de fitheidstest tijdens de L.O. les. Je BMI (Body Mass Index) wordt berekend en op basis van dit cijfer bepaalt de leerkracht of je overgewicht hebt of niet. Echter obesitas is niet de enige kenmerk waaraan je gezondheid kunt linken. Ook chronische aandoeningen zoals astma, epilepsie, diabetes en dergelijke hebben nefaste gevolgen voor een persoon zijn gezondheid. Daarnaast is het ook mogelijk dat een persoon ‘perfect’ gezond is volgens bovenstaande kenmerken maar er wel een ongezonde levensstijl op nahoudt. Elk weekend een lijntje snuiven, comazuipen en roken onder de speeltijd zijn overduidelijk gedragingen die invloed hebben op je gezondheid.

Gezonde mensen, slimme mensen?

Er is al veel onderzoek gedaan naar de invloeden van gezondheidskenmerken op de schoolresultaten. De scriptie van Matteo Claeskens, Thomas Leyssens en Arno Maeckelberghe heeft de synthese gemaakt van al de reeds gedane onderzoeken en is tot volgend resultaat gekomen.

Overgewicht heeft wel degelijk een negatieve invloed op de studieresultaten van de student. Een gezond lichaam is bijgevolg mooi meegenomen bij het studeren van weeral een test wiskunde. Ook diabetes, epilepsie en ADHD hebben een negatieve invloed. Voor astma daarentegen werd dit verband niet gevonden maar werd er wel een hogere afwezigheidsgraad genoteerd.

Voor de feestbeesten onder ons hebben we slecht nieuws. Alcohol consumptie heeft wel degelijk een negatieve invloed op je studieresultaten. Ook af en toe een jointje roken is niet alleen ongezond voor je longen maar ook voor je studieresultaten.

Succesformule van de goede student

Het mag duidelijk zijn dat de recente aandacht voor gezonde leerlingen zeker terecht is. Gezondheid heeft wel degelijk een impact op de studieresultaten. Het is aan (toekomstige) beleidsmakers om dit ook duidelijk te maken aan de leerkrachten en de studenten. Initiatieven zoals een gezond tussendoortje, meer sport op school en het aanleren van de gevaren van een overdaad aan alcohol moeten zeker gesteund worden. Dus denk er aan wanneer je de volgende keer met een zak chips naar een aflevering van ‘Temptation Island’ aan het kijken bent. Doe jezelf een plezier, ga naar buiten en beweeg!
