Hoe blanker, hoe beter?

 

L. vertelde me het volgende verhaal:

“Na een studiereis in het zuiden van India kwam ik wat donkerder dan normaal terug. Toen ik aankwam in de luchthaven stond mijn familie me op te wachten. Terwijl ik iedereen begroette, zag ik hoe twee Somalische tantes me verbijsterd aanstaarden: “Meisje toch,  wat zie je er zo donker uit! Heb je te lang in de zon gelegen?” Bijna hysterisch doorzochten ze hun tas en smeerden zomaar een huidblekend product op mijn gezicht. Ik was met verstomming geslagen en wist niet wat doen!. Ik voelde me verdrietig en afgewezen. Ben ik niet goed genoeg? ”

 

Schoonheidsideaal

Elke cultuur heeft zijn eigen definitie van schoonheid. In de meeste Afrikaanse en Aziatische landen wordt een lichtere huidskleur geassocieerd met schoonheid, succes, macht en aantrekkelijk zijn. Skin whitening of het bleken van de huid wordt voornamelijk gebruikt door Afrikaanse en Aziatische vrouwen om de huidskleur te verlichten. Volgens de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie zijn de grootste gebruikers van skin whitening producten de Nigerianen (77%) gevolgd door de Indiërs (150 miljoen gebruikers). Het hoge percentage is te verklaren omdat zowel vrouwen als mannen de crèmes gebruiken. Skin whitening producten zijn ‘big business’, met een omzet, wereldwijd van 7,3 biljoen euro.

 

Unfair & Lovely

Fair & Lovely is werelds bekendste huidblekende cosmeticalijn. Het bedrijf investeert in talloze controversiële reclames met als centrale boodschap dat men met een blanke huid, meer kans heeft op een huwelijksaanzoek, een succesvolle carrière en schoonheid. Fair & Lovely zorgde voor heel veel commotie in de Indische gemeenschap. Indische meisjes en vrouwen reageerden op sociale media met de hashtag #unfairandlovely met als doel zoveel mogelijk mensen bewust te maken van de gevaren van skin whitening.

Studies hebben aangetoond dat de gebruikers op lange termijn ernstige gezondheidsproblemen ontwikkelen. De meeste huidblekende crèmes bevatten hydrochinon en kwik. Deze giftige ingrediënten veroorzaken verschillende soorten huidziektes en langdurig gebruik kan leiden tot huidkanker, nier- en leverfalen. Het gebruik zou ook psychologische gevolgen hebben zoals een lage zelfwaarde en schaamtegevoelens. 

Als psychologisch consulent was ik benieuwd naar de factoren die vrouwen ertoe bewegen om deze producten te (blijven) gebruiken. In de literatuur vinden we dat een combinatie van factoren zoals: de gevolgen van de kolonisatie, racisme, de invloed van de media, de druk van ouders en Peers een rol spelen.  

Uit gesprekken met 13 donkere vrouwen (tussen 18 en 46) bleek dat ze allemaal een positieve attitude hebben tegenover skin whitening en de negatieve gevolgen van deze producten minimaliseren.  Ze blijven deze producten gebruiken tot ze er last van krijgen, stoppen dan tijdelijk en herbeginnen. Belangrijk hierin is het willen aanvaard worden door leeftijdsgenoten (peer pressure). Opvallend is dat alle vrouwen in hun omgeving één of meerdere personen kennen die aan skin whitening doen, wat de druk nog opvoert om het zelf ook te (blijven) doen.

De media spelen een belangrijke rol omdat deze een eerder negatief beeld verspreiden over donkere vrouwen. Ouders, vooral moeders, zetten hun kinderen aan om hun huid te bleken als ze zelf een donkere huid associëren met lelijk en minderwaardig. De deelnemers voelen zich zekerder van zichzelf naarmate hun huid lichter wordt en ze ook meer positieve bevestiging krijgen van hun omgeving. Een laatste motief om deze crèmes te gebruiken is om imperfecties van de huid (acne, sproeten, pigmentaties) te behandelen en dus ‘mooier’ te worden.

De voornaamste conclusie van dit onderzoek was dat de meerderheid van de deelnemers, ondanks alles, wil beantwoorden aan het ‘blank’ schoonheidsideaal dat in de samenleving circuleert. 

Het was echter niet zo eenvoudig om gekleurde vrouwen te vinden die open wilden praten over skin whitening. Angst voor afwijzing en schaamte waren hierbij belangrijke hindernissen. Vanuit deze ervaringen en op hun vraag startte ik een website op om donkere vrouwen een forum te geven waar ze hun vaak emotionele ervaringen rond skin whitening kunnen delen en elkaar te steunen om zichzelf en elkaar te accepteren (www.womenofcolorplatform.tumblr.com ).
