Verwijdering van platinahoudende cytostatica uit urine en recuperatie van het edelmetaal

Urine: een goudmijn?

Zo, de aandacht is getrokken. Pipi, of iets beschaafder urine, geeft vaak aanleiding tot gegniffel en flauwe moppen, maar is ook het onderwerp van serieus wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Urine bevat namelijk allerlei nuttige elementen zoals fosfor en stikstof, die als meststof in de landbouw zouden kunnen dienen. Er worden veel inspanningen gedaan om methodes te ontwikkelen die de recyclage van deze stoffen mogelijk maken zonder te hoge kosten. In sommige gevallen bevat urine echter ook platina, een edelmetaal dat met zijn prijs van € 32 000 per kilogram evenveel waard is als goud! Is urine de goudmijn van de toekomst?

Platina, wat is dat eigenlijk?

Vooraleer de huis-, tuin- en keukenwetenschapper in u zijn urine begint te ontleden in de hoop schatrijk te worden... niet iedereen heeft platina in zijn urine. Platina wordt gebruikt voor allerlei doeleinden, bijvoorbeeld voor de productie van glas, pacemakers, elektronica en juwelen. Bovendien is het een essentieel onderdeel van autokatalysatoren, apparaten die de schadelijke stoffen in de uitlaatgassen van auto’s afbreken. Maar ook in de strijd tegen kanker wordt het metaal ingezet. Platinahoudende cytostatica (PHC) zijn kankerbestrijdende stoffen die een platina-atoom bevatten. Deze medicijnen worden via een infuus toegediend, een behandeling die beter gekend is als chemotherapie. Nadat PHC in het lichaam kankercellen bestreden hebben, verlaten ze het lichaam via de urine van de patiënt. Tijdens een chemokuur kunnen er dus aanzienlijke hoeveelheden van het edelmetaal in urine aanwezig zijn.

Waarom zou je platina willen recycleren?

Het metaal platina is niet gemakkelijk vervangbaar door andere materialen. Bovendien is het erg duur en kunnen er in de toekomst tekorten van ontstaan. Om het risico op tekorten te verkleinen is intensieve recyclage noodzakelijk. Momenteel wordt platina uit afgedankte autokatalysatoren en juwelen al voor een groot deel gerecycleerd. Wat echter nog niet gebeurd, is recyclage van platina afkomstig van PHC. Momenteel komen de restproducten van PHC via het toilet in de riolering terecht. Deze stoffen zorgen voor milieuvervuiling doordat ze niet goed verwijderd worden door klassieke waterzuiveringsinstallaties. Als het mogelijk blijkt om platina uit de urine van kankerpatiënten te winnen zou dit zorgen voor minder milieuvervuiling en tegelijkertijd een nieuwe bron van platina creëren. Dat zijn twee vliegen in één klap!

Hoe haal je platina dan uit urine?

Om deze vraag te beantwoorden heb ik verschillende experimenten uitgevoerd. Om te beginnen werd de snelheid onderzocht waarmee platina wordt uitgescheiden nadat het werd toegediend via een infuus. Hiervoor werden kleine staaltjes urine van kankerpatiënten geanalyseerd met hightech instrumenten. Dit geeft ons een idee van de hoeveelheid platina die maximaal kan gerecycleerd worden per patiënt. De resultaten voor een typische behandeling met carboplatine, één van de PHC, worden weergegeven in de grafiek. Hierop kan je zien dat platina gedurende de eerste uren met een hoge snelheid wordt uitgescheiden, maar dat er binnen de 24 uur een plateau wordt bereikt van een kleine 160 mg, wat in zuivere vorm 5 euro waard is! Vooraleer het platina terug verkocht kan worden op de markt moet het echter geconcentreerd worden in een kleiner volume.

Adsorptie leek voor deze ‘opconcentratie’ van platina uit urine een interessante techniek. Adsorptie is het fysisch-chemisch proces waarbij stoffen zich hechten aan een oppervlak. Ze plakken als het ware aan een ander materiaal vast. De techniek wordt geregeld in de waterzuivering gebruikt. Het water uit je kraan bijvoorbeeld heeft een deel van zijn zuiverheid hieraan te danken. Een veel gebruikt materiaal voor adsorptie is actieve kool, dat door zijn vele microscopische kanaaltjes een oppervlakte van meer dan 500 m2 per gram bevat. Hierdoor is er veel plaats waaraan de platinahoudende moleculen zich kunnen hechten. Om te onderzoeken of adsorptie kan gebruikt worden om platina uit urine te verwijderen, werd urine van patiënten over een kolom gegoten die gevuld was met korreltjes actieve kool. De platinaconcentratie van de urine bleek kleiner aan de uitgang van de kolom, dan aan de ingang. Dit wijst erop dat de restproducten van de PHC in urine inderdaad goed adsorberen aan de korrels.

Het mag dan bewezen zijn dat de verwijdering van platina met actieve kool technisch mogelijk is, een nieuwe recyclagetechniek wordt slechts op grote schaal toegepast indien er geld mee kan verdiend worden. Platina is dan wel een van de meest kostbare metalen op aarde, de concentraties in urine zijn vaak kleiner dan 0,01 %, dus na de verwijdering met actieve kool moet het platina dat aan de korrels plakt nog verder gezuiverd worden in een gespecialiseerde fabriek. Al deze stappen kosten geld: het inzamelen van de urine vraagt tijd en energie, actieve kool moet aangekocht worden en het transport en de verwerking van de verzadigde korrels zijn ook niet gratis. Er is niet enkel een economische kost, maar ook milieubelasting door het gebruik van al deze energie en materialen. De vraag is dus of de kosten opwegen tegen de baten. Onze eerste berekeningen zijn hoopgevend wat de economische balans betreft: er wordt netto winst voorspeld! Om zeker te weten of de techniek de moeite waard is, is verder onderzoek noodzakelijk. Een bemoeilijkende factor is alvast dat urine na chemotherapie uiterst giftig is. Er moet dus voorzichtig mee omgesprongen worden.

Back to the future…

PIPI. Misschien veroorzaakt het woord nog steeds wat gegrinnik, maar het vormt nu ook stof tot nadenken. Zal er in de toekomst een speciaal toilet voorzien zijn voor patiënten die een behandeling met PHC ondergaan, waarin actieve kool het platina uit de urine filtert? Wie weet is dit binnen enkele jaren een bron van mooi blinkend metaal dat later zijn dienst doet in autokatalysatoren. Dan zijn we alweer een stapje dichter bij een circulaire economie!
