Influence of Irradiance on the Photochemical Separation of Europium/Yttrium Mixtures

Zeldzame grondstoffen uit veelvoorkomend afval

De kans dat u dit leest bij het licht van een TL-lamp is bijzonder groot, die dingen hangen zo’n beetje overal. Wanneer ze –eventueel na een fase van irritant knipperen- de geest geven, weet u wat te doen: inleveren, bij de elektro winkel of het containerpark. Dat is in de eerste plaats omdat fluorescentielampen, zoals de TL-buis en de spaarlamp, kwik bevatten. Dat is giftig en mag niet in het milieu terecht komen. Het inleveren van TL-lampen zou echter nog veel meer nut kunnen hebben.

Fluorescentielampen bevatten enkele bijzonder kostbare metalen zoals europium, terbium en yttrium. Ze zitten in het fosforpoeder, het witte laagje dat zich tegen het glas bevindt (zie bijlage 1). Met de juiste technologie zouden alle ingeleverde fluorescentielampen een hernieuwbare bron kunnen worden van deze grondstoffen. En daar is dringend nood aan.

De metalen zijn zeldzaam op de internationale markt, door tal van redenen. Ertsen met een hoge concentratie aan deze metalen bestaan niet. De gebruikte ertsen bevatten verschillende bruikbare en onbruikbare metalen. Bästnasiet, het mineraal dat decennialang de belangrijkste bron aan europium was, bevat zo’n 0.1% van het metaal. Dat maakt de ontginning economisch weinig aantrekkelijk. Om een zuiver metaal uit het erts te winnen zijn honderden verwerkingsstappen nodig. Ook dat is duur en tijdrovend. Bovendien creëert het tonnen chemisch afval. Als het gebruikte erts ook het chemisch element thorium bevat, is het afval dat ontstaat tijdens de verwerking zelfs radioactief. Zowel het afval, als de metalen die niet meteen gebruikt worden, moeten veilig worden opgeslagen. Dat levert weer een meerkost op.

Gedurende de jaren ‘90 sloten wereldwijd quasi alle Westerse mijnen, uit de markt geconcurreerd door de Chinese producenten. In China was de milieuwetgeving immers minder streng (om het eufemistisch te stellen), wat het productieproces aanzienlijk goedkoper maakte. In de eerste jaren van het nieuwe millennium had China de zowat de volledige wereldproductie in handen. Toen het in 2010 exportquota invoerde, brak totale paniek uit op de internationale markten. Op dat ogenblik werd het voor het Westen pijnlijk duidelijk hoe afhankelijk het was van China voor deze grondstoffen en de prijzen schoten de hoogte in. Plots moest men op zoek naar andere bronnen. Oude mijnen werden heropend, maar ook alternatieve bronnen, zoals recyclage, wonnen aan interesse. Begin 2015 moest China de exportquota opheffen na een veroordeling van de Wereldhandelsorganisatie WTO, maar er bestaat nog steeds een systeem van exportvergunningen. Het blijft dus moeilijk voor het Westen om de bevoorrading aan deze grondstoffen te garanderen.

Europium, terbium en yttrium herwinnen uit afgedankte goederen die deze metalen bevatten kan een antwoord bieden, er zijn een aantal belangrijke voordelen aan verbonden. In de ertsen vind je heel veel metalen bijeen. Die zijn niet allemaal bruikbaar en hebben niet allemaal een afzetmarkt. De metalen in afgedankte goederen hebben minstens een mogelijke bestemming: het product waar ze uit komen. Het hele proces om tot een zuiver metaal te komen, wordt bovendien een stuk eenvoudiger of verdwijnt volledig. Er zijn ook ecologische voordelen aan verbonden: het delven van ertsen, wat erg milieubelastend is, is niet langer nodig en de afvalberg verkleint. Ten laatste is het niet onbelangrijk dat het Westen minder afhankelijk zou worden van China.

Dat brengt ons terug bij de alomtegenwoordige fluorescentielampen. Zoals al aangehaald, worden ze netjes ingezameld. Ze bevatten kostbare en zeldzame metalen. Er is meer dan voldoende reden om deze metalen uit de afgedankte lampen te herwinnen. Het enige wat nog ontbreekt is goede technologie.

Het is immers allemaal niet zo simpel om de metalen uit de afgedankte lamp te halen. Het witte fosforpoeder is een mengsel van drie componenten. Een zorgt voor groen licht, dat is de component die terbium bevat; dan is er een component die zorgt voor blauw ligt en de derde component zorgt voor rood licht. De combinatie levert wit licht. Die laatste component bevat zowel yttrium als europium, hierop ligt de focus in dit onderzoek. Die kan van het fosformengsel onttrokken worden, daarvoor is reeds een technologie voorhanden. Dan rest er nog een stap: het yttrium van het europium scheiden. En dat is waar het moeilijk wordt. De twee metalen hebben heel gelijkaardige eigenschappen. Het is daarom dat ze samen in ertsen te vinden zijn, met nog een heleboel anderen. Stoffen met gelijkaardige chemische eigenschappen zijn bovendien erg moeilijk te scheiden. Dit is de verklaring voor de vele behandelingsstappen nodig om zuivere metalen uit deze ertsen te winnen. Wanneer yttrium en europium uit de rode lampfosfor moeten gescheiden worden, stelt het probleem zich opnieuw. Een goede recyclage technologie vereenvoudigt die scheiding.

Europium heeft gelukkig een interessante eigenschap. Wanneer het wordt blootgesteld aan licht van een zekere golflengte, veranderen de chemische eigenschappen. Als deze eigenschap kan worden benut, kan de scheiding een stuk eenvoudiger worden. Het licht dat de eigenschappen van europium wijzigt, is UV-licht.

In het onderzoek werd een oplossing met europium en yttrium beschenen met een UV-lamp. Hieruit kon geconcludeerd worden dat het mogelijk is een volledige scheiding te realiseren met behulp van licht in een enkele stap. Sterker licht versnelt het scheidingsproces.

Dit opent heel wat perspectieven. Om de twee metalen van elkaar te scheiden zijn veel minder chemicaliën nodig. Dit betekent minder chemisch afval. Omdat er minder stappen nodig zijn, kan de installatie een stuk kleiner en eenvoudiger worden. Bovendien levert het een hernieuwbare bron aan kostbare en nodige grondstoffen.

De productie van europium en yttrium is een proces dat alle soorten moeilijkheden kent, economische en politieke. Het zou dus bijzonder interessant zijn om een alternatieve bron van deze grondstoffen te vinden. Dit kan worden mogelijk gemaakt door gebruik te maken van de unieke eigenschappen van europium: het wijzigt zijn chemische eigenschappen onderworpen aan UV-licht. Onder invloed van UV-licht is het mogelijk de scheiding te realiseren in één stap. De scheiding kan zelfs worden versneld met een sterkere lichtbron. Dit proces moet van afgedankte lampen een hernieuwbare bron van de zeldzame grondstoffen europium en yttrium maken.
