Fun with brands: een experimenteel onderzoek naar het effect van enjoyment en cognitieve overload van advergames

De advergame, een effectief reclamemiddel?

Sinds jaar en dag worden we overspoeld door reclame in diverse media. Je bent waarschijnlijk al de motiliumkikker met een opgeblazen gevoel op televisie tegengekomen of hoorde op de radio wel al eens dat u het maakt met Gamma. Recent dook het stressmannetje van de Lijn zelfs op in een online spelletje. Maar zijn we wel in staat om al deze reclameclutter te verwerken? Of hebben we de dag van vandaag onszelf multitasking skills aangeleerd om hiermee om te gaan?

De limieten van ons brein
Je kent het wel, we komen soms 4000 reclameboodschappen op een dag tegen. Onze zoekresultaten en sociale media worden ondergedompeld in gepersonaliseerde reclame … Of kennen we het net niet? Beseffen we nog wanneer we reclame waarnemen? Zijn we zodanig gefocust op het volbrengen van onze taken waardoor we de advertenties niet meer opmerken? Het limited capacity model of motivated mediated message processing stelt namelijk dat mensen een gelimiteerde capaciteit hebben om informatie, en dus reclame, te verwerken. In mijn scriptie ging ik na of dit toepasbaar is op een nieuw speeltje die adverteerders gebruiken om consumenten aan zich te binden: advergames.

Advergames
Advergames zijn games die speciaal ontwikkeld zijn om een merk of product te promoten. Het is een nieuw marketinginstrument dat productgerelateerde berichten verpakt in een videogame en er een mooie strik van plezier rond windt. Adverteerders zijn gedreven door een queeste: de zoektocht naar een effectieve manier om consumenten te bereiken. Hierdoor proberen ze onder andere het plezierig element van games te koppelen aan hun product. Plezier is namelijk een van de belangrijkste motivaties om een game te spelen. Dit kan gekoppeld worden aan de flowtheorie van Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Csikszentmihalyi gaat ervan uit dat iemand plezier beleeft wanneer men zich in een flow state bevindt. Tijdens een flow ervaart de speler een optimale mentale ervaring waarbij hij of zij in the zone terecht komt. Deze vorm van immersie maximaliseert prestatie en plezier. Vaak gebeurt het dan ook dat de speler alles om zich heen vergeet en helemaal opgaat in de game. Aangezien online spelletjes an sich leuk zijn, denken adverteerders dat dit zich ook vertaalt in winstcijfers. Maar is dit ook zo?

Let the game begin!
Deze vragen probeer ik in mijn scriptie te beantwoorden. Met mijn thesis heb ik geprobeerd in het theoretisch en empirisch discussiebad te duiken om via een experiment de effectiviteit van advergames na te gaan. Hiervoor heb ik mij gefocust op of het hebben van plezier of het ervaren van een cognitieve overbelasting bij het spelen van een advergame een invloed hebben op hoe we reclame verwerken. Vele onderzoeken naar advergames onderscheidden echter het cognitieve en het affectieve aspect van een game niet van elkaar. Dit kan een verklaring zijn waarom ik op veel inconsistente resultaten in de literatuur omtrent reclame in games stuitte. Daarom manipuleerde ik het hebben van plezier en cognitieve overbelasting afzonderlijk.

Aan mijn experimenteel onderzoek heb ik een creatieve twist gegeven door de advergames zelf te ontwikkelen. Op deze manier probeerde ik de afzonderlijke variabelen zo goed mogelijk te manipuleren. In totaal werden er vier advergames ontwikkeld, waarbij 458 respondenten willekeurig aan één conditie werden toegewezen.

Ten eerste ging ik in mijn onderzoek na of het hebben van plezier een effect heeft op het verwerken van advergames door de advergames te laten vergezellen of te laten ontnemen van een fun-factor. Dit manipuleerde ik aan de hand van beloningen en straffen (zoals punten, stimulerende visuele en auditieve indicaties). Ik ging ook na of het verwerken van te veel stimuli, of het ervaren van een cognitieve overload, in een advergame de effectiviteit van advergames beïnvloed. Hiervoor maakte ik sommige advergames meer of minder uitdagend door extra geluiden of bewegende objecten toe te voegen of weg te nemen.

In het kader van mijn opleiding Nieuwe Media en Maatschappij, heb ik getracht mijn scriptie via een niet-traditionele manier te onderzoeken. De vragenlijsten en de advergames werden namelijk verspreid via e-mails en sociale media zoals Facebook en Twitter. De spelers mochten na het spelen van de advergame het spel delen op hun persoonlijke pagina. Dit zorgde ervoor dat het experiment zo dicht mogelijk bij de realiteit aansloot van marketingacties zoals virale marketing.

“Welk merk?”
De resultaten van mijn experimenteel onderzoek waren opmerkelijk. Tegen alle verwachtingen in konden de spelers die veel plezier hadden bij het spelen van een advergame, zich het merk in het spel nauwelijks herinneren. Dit betekent dat voorgaand onderzoek over de flowtheorie deze theorie niet op de juiste manier toepasten op advergames. Wanneer we een leuke advergame spelen, worden we helemaal geabsorbeerd in de flow van het spel. Dit zorgt echter niet voor een betere merkherinnering. In tegendeel. In een flow focussen we ons optimaal op het spelen van het spel waardoor we andere omgevingsstimuli, zoals reclameboodschappen, negeren.

Als de advergames voor de spelers té cognitief belastend zijn, kunnen spelers zich het merk niet herinneren en hebben ze zelfs een negatievere attitude ten opzichte van de advergame. Uit het experiment is gebleken dat slechts 29% van de respondenten er zich van bewust waren dat ze blootgesteld waren geweest aan een merk. De spelers van advergames kunnen weinig aandacht schenken aan de reclamestimuli waardoor ze zich het merk niet goed kunnen herinneren. Dit betekent dat het limited capacity model of motivated mediated message processing kan toegepast worden op verder onderzoek naar het verwerken van advergames.

What’s in a game?
Uit mijn onderzoek kan ik concluderen dat we, ondanks het groeiend aantal conglomeraten die ons onderdompelen met reclame, nu eenmaal niet kunnen multitasken. Adverteerders moeten hier rekening mee houden indien ze advergames willen ontwerpen om hun merk memorabel te maken. Het is voor zowel gameontwikkelaars als voor adverteerders van groot belang om weet te hebben van hoe ver de limieten van deze menselijke cognitieve bronnen reiken. Mijn studie biedt daarom vruchtbare inzichten voor adverteerders om hun reclamestrategieën te verbeteren door rekening te houden met de affectieve- en cognitieve waarde van de advertentie.
