Droogzetten met beperkt gebruik van antimicrobiële middelen: Toepassing in de Vlaamse melkveehouderij

Selectief droogzetten: Toepassing in de Vlaamse melkveehouderij

Het antibioticagebruik in de veehouderij ligt onder vuur vanwege de maatschappelijke bezorgdheid rond  antibioticaresistentie. Selectief droogzetten is een mogelijke  manier om het gebruik van antimicrobiële middelen terug te dringen.

Als gevolg van een toenemende resistentie tegen verschillende soorten antibiotica groeit de maatschappelijke bezorgdheid rond antibioticagebruik in de veehouderij. Op het merendeel van de Vlaamse melkveebedrijven wordt vandaag de dag standaard een antibioticahoudende droogzettube toegediend bij het droogzetten. Het doel hiervan is tweeledig: enerzijds kunnen de antibiotica infecties die aanwezig zijn bij het begin van de droogstand bestrijden, anderzijds helpen ze bij het vermijden dat een dier tijdens de droogstand een uierontsteking ontwikkelt. Tot wel 70% van de gevallen van mastitis tijdens de eerste 100 dagen van de lactatie vinden immers hun oorsprong in de droogstand. Het gebruik van antibiotica om te vermijden dat een dier een infectie oploopt, wordt preventief gebruik genoemd. Vooral dit preventieve gebruik van antibiotica ligt onder vuur. Een dier met een infectie mag en moet zelfs worden behandeld, maar de consument vraagt zich af of het wel nodig is om antibiotica te gebruiken bij dieren die op het moment van toediening gezond zijn.

Selectief droogzettenHet preventieve antibioticagebruik in de melkveehouderij kan mogelijks worden teruggedrongen door middel van selectief droogzetten. Dit houdt in dat er per dier wordt beslist of het nood heeft aan een antibioticabehandeling tijdens de droogstand. De filosofie achter selectief droogzetten is dat dieren die niet geïnfecteerd zijn aan het begin van de droogstand en waarvan het weinig waarschijnlijk is dat ze tijdens de droogstand uierontsteking gaan ontwikkelen, worden drooggezet zonder antibioticahoudende droogzettube. Het celgetal van de laatste 3 MPR-uitslagen voor droogstand en informatie over klinische mastitis tijdens de voorgaande lactatie zijn veelgebruikte parameters om te beslissen of een dier al dan niet in aanmerking komt om zonder antibiotica te worden drooggezet. Vaak gebruikte selectiecriteria om zonder antibioticca droog te zetten zijn een maximum celgetal van 150.000 cellen/ml gedurende de 3 laatste MPR-uitslagen voor droogstand bij de vaarzen en een maximum van 250.000 cellen/ml voor de koeien. Omdat de bescherming vanwege antibiotica tegen nieuwe infecties achterwege blijft bij een dier dat geen droogzettube krijgt toegediend, moet er extra aandacht zijn naar managementmaatregelen tijdens de droogstand die het risico op nieuwe infecties beïnvloeden.

ADLO-project verantwoord gebruik van antibioticaIn het kader van het ADLO-project “Verantwoord gebruik van antibiotica in de Vlaamse melkveehouderij door commmunicatie, opleiding en begeleiding” werd het management op vlak van uiergezondheid op 26 bedrijven die vrijwillig selectief droogzetten toepassen geanalyseerd. Elk van de bedrijven werd bezocht met een vragenlijst die peilde naar de reden voor selectief droogzetten, de selectiecriteria die worden gebruikt om te beslissen of een dier met of zonder antibiotica wordt drooggezet en de managementmaatregelen die worden toegepast om het risico op nieuwe infecties tijdens de droogstand te beperken. Informatie over het antibioticagebruik van alle droogstanden tussen 1 januari 2013 en 1 september 2014 werd genoteerd. Op basis van celgetalgegevens uit de MPR-uitslagen voor en na de droogstand werd er bepaald welke managementmaatregelen tijdens de droogstand aan te raden zijn voor de uiergezondheid en werd er een vergelijking gemaakt tussen droogzetten met en zonder antibiotica.

Resultaten managementmaatregelenOp de deelnemende bedrijven bleek dat op bedrijven die stapsgewijs droogzetten door de 2 laatste dagen voor het begin van de droogstand eenmaal daags te melken, er minder uierontstekingen zijn in de eerste 100 dagen van de volgende lactatie. Verder blijkt dat een productie lager dan 15 kg de dag voor droogstand en het gebruik van interne teatsealers het aantal uierontstekingen in de volgende lactatie doet afnemen. Zelfs een simpele ingreep zoals de dieren minstens 30 minuten vastzetten in het voederhek na droogzetten reduceert het aantal mastitisgevallen in de volgende lactatie. Op gebied van huisvesting valt er moeilijk algemeen te stellen of droge koeien nu best op de weide of in de stal staan voor de uiergezondheid. Feit is wel dat iedereen op zijn bedrijf moet uitmaken waar de infectiedruk op de uier het laagste is, in de stal of op de weide. Beweiden tijdens de winter blijkt wel uit den boze te zijn. Ligboxenstallen dragen voor de uiergezondheid de voorkeur op potstallen en bindstallen. De ligplaatsen worden best ingestrooid met zaagsel, in potstallen blijkt gebruik van compost als beddingsmateriaal beter te zijn voor de uiergezondheid dan stro. De ligplaatsen van de droogstaande koeien moeten minstens dagelijks worden proper gemaakt of worden ingestrooid.

Resultaten op dierniveauOp dierniveau werden er vergeleken wat de impact was op uiergezondheid als er dieren worden drooggezet zonder antibiotica. Doorheen de volledige analyse werd er een onderscheid gemaakt in dieren die hun eerste droogstand ingaan, de ‘vaarzen’, en dieren die al minstens 1 droogstand achter de rug hebben, de ‘koeien’. In tabel 1 wordt, per diercategorie, de verschillen in het geometrisch gemiddelde celgetal van de eerste 3 MPR-uitslagen na afkalven weergegeven in functie van het antibioticagebruik.    Het blijkt duidelijk dat vaarzen die de laatste 3 MPR-uitslagen voor de droogstand minder dan 150.000 cellen/ml hebben geen hoger celgetal hebben na afkalven als ze zonder antibiotica worden drooggezet. Koeien die de laatste 3 MPR-uitslagen onder de grens van 250.000 cellen/ml blijven en zonder antibiotica worden drooggezet hebben echter een hoger celgetal na afkalven! Dit geeft aan dat de vaak het vaak gebruikte selectiecriterium voor de vaarzen, namelijk de 3 laatste MPR-uitslagen een celgetal van maximum 150.000 cellen/ml gepast is voor de vaarzen. Het vaak gebruikte selectiecriterium van maximaal 250.000 cellen/ml bij de laatste 3 MPR-uitslagen voor droogstand  bij koeien geeft duidelijk aanleiding tot hogere celgetaluitslagen na afkalven.

ConclusieVia het management van de droogstaande koeien kan het risico op nieuwe infecties tijdens de droogstand sterk worden beperkt. Vaarzen die de laatste 3 MPR-uitslagen voor de droogstand niet meer dan 150.000 cellen/ml scoren, komen zeker in aanmerking om zonder antibiotica droog te zetten zonder dat het celgetal na droogstand hoger ligt. Hetzelfde kan niet worden gezegd van de koeien. De vaak gebruikte grenswaarde van maximum 250.000 cellen/ml gedurende de laatste 3 MPR-uitslagen voor droogstand geeft aanleiding tot hogere celgetaluitslagen na afkalven.
