De rol van het verenigingsleven in het vertrouwen in de EU bij adolescenten in Vlaanderen
Samenvatting
Deze masterproef focust op de rol van het verenigingsleven in het vertrouwen in de Europese Unie (EU) bij Vlaamse adolescenten. Mensen die actief zijn bij een vereniging hebben namelijk meer sociaal en politiek vertrouwen dan zij die niet actief zijn bij een vereniging. Deze studie is ontwikkeld met behulp van Ordinary Least Square regressiemethodes. Deze schatten het effect van verenigingsleven op het vertrouwen in de EU. De data komen van de Parent-Child Socialization Study 2012 dataset. Deze bevat gegevens en houdingen van 3426 Vlaamse adolescenten van het derde jaar secundair onderwijs. De belangrijkste bevinding is dat verenigingsleven geen positief effect heeft op het vertrouwen in de EU, maar dat dit effect gemedieerd wordt door algemeen sociaal vertrouwen. Vlaamse adolescenten met veel algemeen sociaal vertrouwen hebben meer vertrouwen in de EU dan Vlaamse adolescenten die weinig algemeen sociaal vertrouwen hebben. Tenslotte blijkt het dat Vlaamse adolescenten die actief betrokken zijn bij een jeugdvereniging wel meer vertrouwen hebben in de EU dan Vlaamse adolescenten die niet actief betrokken zijn bij een jeugdvereniging, ongeacht hun algemeen sociaal vertrouwen of andere achtergrondkenmerken.
Zoals te zien in de tabellen in bijlage, blijkt het verder dat Vlaamse adolescenten met veel algemeen sociaal vertrouwen meer vertrouwen hebben in de EU dan zij die weinig algemeen sociaal vertrouwen hebben. Meisjes hebben ook meer vertrouwen in de EU dan jongens. Adolescenten die een lagere studierichting volgen hebben minder vertrouwen in de EU dan zij die een hogere studierichting volgen. Zij die veel politieke interesse hebben, hebben meer vertrouwen in de EU dan zij die weinig politieke interesse hebben. Ten slotte hebben adolescenten met een hoge verwachte kennis van de EU meer vertrouwen in de EU dan zij die weinig verwachte kennis van de EU hebben. Leeftijd blijkt geen effect te hebben op het vertrouwen in de EU.
