De marktreactie van farmaceutische bedrijven op een beslissing door de Food and Drug Administration tijdens de financiële crisis

De marktreactie op beslissingen van de Food and Drug Administration bij farmaceutische bedrijven.

De beslissingen die de Food and Drug Administration maakt heeft zeer grote gevolgen op de marktreactie bij farmaceutische bedrijven. Dit onderzoek in opdracht van KU Leuven campus Antwerpen bewijst dat er een zeer significante marktreacties aanwezig zijn na dergelijke beslissingen en aankondigingen door de Federale Amerikaanse instelling. Deze beslissing (approval/rejection) wordt uitgesproken na een lang onderzoek van gemiddeld 13,5 jaar waarin het farmaceutisch bedrijf enorme investeringen heeft moeten doen.

De Food and Drug Administration reglementeert meer dan 30% van de import naar de Amerikaanse consumptiemarkt. Hun beslissing om een product toe te laten, heeft dus grote gevolgen voor de betrokken bedrijven. Een negatieve beslissing zal een veel grotere reactie oproepen dan een positieve beslissing. De aandelenmarkt reageert dus sterker op het slechte nieuws dan op goed nieuws. Het onderzoek toont ook aan dat er verschillen zijn in reactie bij verschillende deelgroepen tussen de bedrijven. Zo ondervinden kleine bedrijven een veel sterkere invloed dan grotere bedrijven of Amerikaanse bedrijven een sterkere reactie dan niet-Amerikaanse bedrijven. Het verband tussen de grootte van een bedrijf en de reactie is te verklaren via het verrassingseffect, gecreëerd door asymmetrische informatie. Een klein bedrijf dat relatief onbekend is zal een veel sterkere reactie ondervinden dan een grote multinational.

Ook is er bewijs gevonden die de stelling van overreactie op de aandelenmarkt ondersteunt. Zo heeft de studie resultaten die aantonen dat de koers na de initiële reactie telkens een significante terugval ondervindt. Dit bewijst dat de aandelenmarkt te sterk reageert wanneer de beslissing net wordt aangekondigd. Deze overreactie is sterker aanwezig bij slecht nieuws dan bij goed nieuws. De dagen volgend op de beslissing wordt de reactie dan opnieuw rechtgezet.

Een farmaceutisch bedrijf dat wil exporteren naar de Amerikaanse markt zal dus zeker van zichzelf moeten zijn wanneer het een application indient bij de Food and Drug Administration, want er komen zeer hoge kosten bij kijken. Het ontvangen van een rejection heeft catastrofale gevolgen voor de marktwaarde van de farmaceutische onderneming.
