Iedereen Ooggetuige: Amateurbeelden uit Syrië

 

Amateurbeelden spelen sleutelrol in berichtgeving over Syrië

Iets meer dan een derde van de foto's en video's uit Syrië die verschijnen in de Vlaamse media zijn gemaakt door amateurs. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van masterstudent Samuel Hanegreefs. Lezers en kijkers worden er in veel gevallen niet van op de hoogte gebracht dat het gaat om niet-professioneel en mogelijk onbetrouwbaar materiaal.

"In veel gevallen zijn het nu de gewone burgers op de straat die als eerste beelden maken van belangrijke nieuwsfeiten", zegt Riyaad Minty, hoofd sociale media bij de Arabische zender Al Jazeera. "De Arabische Lente was daarbij een kantelmoment." Toen achtereenvolgens de dictatoriale regimes in Tunesië, Egypte en Libië vielen, werd de wereld immers overspoeld met een ongeziene golf van amateurbeelden.

Ook in de Vlaamse media was de impact groot. Masterstudent journalistiek Samuel Hanegreefs onderzocht het belang van amateurbeelden in de Syrië-berichtgeving in de Vlaamse kranten De Standaard en Het Laatste Nieuws en op de VRT-nieuwssite deredactie.be. Daaruit bleek dat in de periode van maart 2011 tot en met december 2012 maar liefst 36,4 procent van de gepubliceerde beelden over Syrië werden gemaakt door amateurs. Met de beelden van regeringsleiders en officiële ontmoetingen buiten beschouwing gelaten ging het zelfs over 57,2 procent.

Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat die amateurbeelden heel wat explicieter zijn dan de vertrouwde professionele beelden. Bovendien zijn de bronnen ervan vaak onduidelijk en dus niet erg betrouwbaar. Net daarom is het opmerkelijk dat de onderzochte media slechts bij 39,8 procent van de beelden aangaven dat het ging om niet-geverifieerd en mogelijk onbetrouwbaar materiaal.
