Het equivalent modelleren en analyseren van aluminium honingraatcomposiet,een eindige-elementenstudie

De gesimuleerde wereld, een sprong in het ongewisse

Steeds meer en meer vindt de eindige-elementenmethode zijn opmars binnen de ingenieurswetenschappen. Deze term is de naam voor de techniek die toelaat om complexe fysische fenomenen na te bootsen met behulp van computers en supercomputers en wordt uitgevoerd door programma’s die de vakterm ‘simulatiepakket’ dragen. Ze wordt in bedrijven ook met toenemende mate toegepast om de hoge kostprijs die gepaard gaat met de uitvoering van destructieve tests op peperdure prototypes te omzeilen. Helaas is het onmogelijk om in detail te treden over mijn scriptie in een artikel van slechts duizend woorden. Bij deze geef ik u een beknopte inleiding op wat mijn werk inhoudt.

Wiskunde is de taal van de natuurkunde. Jarenlang heeft de mens getracht de tastbare wereld rondom hem te vervatten in getallen en wiskundige vergelijkingen. Zo leerde Sir Isaac Newton ons in zijn publicatie van 5 juni 1687 dat de zwaartekracht kan worden benaderd aan de hand van een stel eenvoudige vergelijkingen. Denk ook maar aan het getal pi, dat niet meer weg te denken is uit onze hedendaagse maatschappij.

Net zoals de bevinding van Newton kunnen nagenoeg alle fysische problemen worden benaderd aan de hand van complexe wiskundige vergelijkingen. Hoe complexer het systeem, hoe complexer de vergelijkingen en bijgevolg de berekeningen. Tot de zestiger jaren was het uitrekenen van deze differentiaalvergelijkingen een enorm tijdrovende bezigheid voor de toenmalige ingenieur. Het ontstaan van de computer zou hierin verandering brengen met de opkomst van de eindige-elementenanalyse.

De mens is uit nature liever lui dan moe. Dit geldt ook voor de gemiddelde ingenieur, hij streeft steeds naar de gemakkelijkste oplossing voor complexe problemen.

Eindige elementen?Een hele sprong voorwaards werd gezet met de introductie van 3D tekenpakketten. Deze programma’s worden gebruikt om 3D tekeningen te maken van reële objecten. Tegenwoordig bestaan er zelfs ‘goedkope’ 3D-scanners die de fysische werkelijkheid kunnen vervatten in enen en nullen. Door deze digitale kunstwerkjes te linken aan een simulatiepakket is het mogelijk enkele belangrijke eigenschappen te achterhalen in een ‘gesimuleerde wereld’ die de natuurkundige wetten naleeft. Zo kan er worden getest op sterkte, thermische geleidbaarheid, aerodynamica, eigenfrequenties, vermoeiingssterkte (denk maar aan metaalmoeheid) en ga zo maar door. Het aanbod is eindeloos. Maar waarom noemt men deze techniek ‘de eindige-elementenmethode’? Wel, het is eigenlijk eenvoudiger dan wat de term doet uitschijnen. Als het ware wordt de 3D tekening opgesplitst in een eindige (dus niet oneindig) hoeveelheid elementen. In essentie kan de berkening van het gehele object opgesplitst worden in deelberekeningen die tenopzichte van elkaar worden benaderd. Zo zal elk element een invloed hebben op zijn naburig element en kan de berekening volgens een iteratief benaderingsalgoritme worden uitgevoerd. De benadering zal worden goedgekeurd zodra het verschil tussen de huidige en de voorgaande iteratie klein genoeg is geworden. Hier lig je liefst niet te lang over wakker. De tak van de numerieke wiskunde is namelijk geen lachtertje, en zeer complex om even in twee zinnen te vervatten. De meer geavanceerde lezer verwijs ik graag door naar de wetenschappelijke paperdatabases.

Time is moneyDe aanschaf van eindige-elementensoftware zoals Abaqus, Siemens NX of Ansys, is een enorme kost voor een bedrijf. De prijs voor deze gespecialiseerde software variëert van 3000 tot 50000 euro per licentie, afhankelijk van de gekozen modules. Wenst men gebruik te maken van modules om bijvoorbeeld aerodynamische verschijnselen te simuleren, zoals gebruikt wordt door verschillende Formule 1 teams, ziet men de prijs al snel stijgen. Studenten mogen van geluk spreken. zij kunnen met de meeste pakketten aan de slag met een beperkte educatieversie. Op de markt circuleren ook opensource eindige elementenpakketten voor de ‘doe-het-zelver’, denk maar aan CalculiX, Impact en Z88.

Hoewel de vorige alinea het tegendeel tracht te bewijzen werkt de eindige-elementenanalyse ook kostenbesparend. “Kan het design extreme omstandigheden aan?” Dit is een vraag die een belangrijke stap in het ingenieursproces tekent. Tests worden uitgevoerd om het fysische kunnen van een prototype te kunnen weergeven. Dit soort proeven leiden in de meeste gevallen tot een vernietiging van het object, het is ook om deze reden dat deze zogenaamde destructieve tests heel wat geld kosten voor het bedrijf. Door virtuele voorstellingen van reële objecten te onderwerpen aan de analyse dienen steeds minder destructieve tests te worden uitgevoerd. De kostprijs die de productie van eventuele prototypes met zich meebrengt wordt hierdoor omzeild. In de kantlijn moet nog wel worden vermeld dat deze programma’s krachtige computers vereisen om de berekeningen snel genoeg te kunnen uitvoeren.

Time is money, sommige ontwerpen zijn erg complex om te simuleren. Een voorbeeld van een complexe probleem is het simuleren honingraatstructuur. Het is een structuur die wordt gebruikt als kern van sandwichcomposieten en bestaat voor structurele toepassingen uit aluminium. Hoe complexer het 3D-model dat moet worden onderworpen aan de analyse, des te meer tijd de computer nodig heeft om het geheel te berekenen. Net om die reden zijn hedendaagse FEM-ingenieurs steeds in de weer om hun 3D-modellen te vereenvoudigen om de kostprijs van hun onderzoek te drukken. Ook ik heb in mijn thesis een wiskundige methode uitgewerkt om de complexe honingraatvorm virtueel te kunnen omvormen naar een continu orthotroop lichaam, wat de berekeningen gemiddeld twintigduizend maal versnelde. Door dit enorm resultaat was ik ook de enige persoon die werd gevraagd zijn resultaten te publiceren in een wetenschappelijke paper. Dit heeft mij ook warm gemaakt tot het schrijven van dit artikel en overtuigd om deel te nemen aan de Vlaamse Scriptieprijs.
