Iedereen liegt, en meestal is dat helemaal niet zo hinderlijk. Het wordt pas problematisch in het kader van een misdrijf, waar een verdachte zijn onschuld blijft volhouden en een slachtoffer of zijn nabestaanden op antwoorden wachten. Ook voor de rechtsstaat is waarheidsvinding een hoog aangeschreven goed. Zowel het opsluiten van onschuldigen, als het vrijspreken van daders zijn betreurenswaardige voorvallen.
De weg naar de waarheid kent echter vele hindernissen. We bespreken de feilbaarheid van het geheugen van slachtoffers en getuigen. Daarnaast bestaat er altijd de kans dat een verdachte een valse bekentenis aflegt, onder meer door de druk die een politieverhoor met zich kan meebrengen.
Aan de hand van verschillende middelen probeert onze politie toch de waarheid boven water te krijgen. Ze maken hierbij gebruik van verschillende ondervragingstechnieken, maar in sommige gevallen wordt de polygraaf ingezet, in de hoop een moeilijke zaak te ontsluiten.
De polygraaf steunt op het idee dat leugenaars door een haast onmerkbare fysieke respons hun leugens blootgeven. Het is echter een omstreden middel, en daarom bekijken we naast het wettelijk kader ook de betrouwbaarheid van de verschillende methoden van de leugendetector.
We schetsen hier eveneens het toekomstbeeld van de polygraaf. Gezien de discussie over de foutenmarge van de huidige leugendetector, is het belangrijk om te focussen op nieuwe theorieën en methoden die in de toekomst eventueel tot aanpassingen of uitbreidingen van de hedendaagse polygraaf kunnen leiden.
