Heeft klasgrootte een effect op de leesvaardigheid van leerlingen in het 4e leerjaar basisonderwijs?

 

Klassenverkleining werkt niet                                                       

Antwerpen, juni 2012 - Leerlingen in kleinere klassen behalen geen betere prestaties. Dat blijkt uit een studie aan de Universiteit Antwerpen naar het effect van klasgrootte op de leesprestaties van leerlingen in het basisonderwijs.

Investeren in kleinere klassen

De grootte van de klas waar leerlingen in zitten is niet van invloed op hun leerprestaties. Verkleinde klassen helpen niet. Nochtans wordt momenteel vanuit het onderwijsbeleid geïnvesteerd in klassenverkleining. Vlaams Minister van Onderwijs, Jeugd en Gelijke kansen, Pascal Smet, maakte op 20 juli 2011 bekend dat het nieuwe omkaderingssysteem voor het basisonderwijs principieel is goed-gekeurd. Dit betekent dat voor kleuter- en lager onderwijs extra middelen worden voorzien. Zo zouden er met een budget van 52,7 miljoen euro tegen september 2012 liefst 1300 extra voltijdse leerkrachten in dienst worden genomen in het kleuteronderwijs. De extra aangeworven leerkrachten moeten ervoor zorgen dat het gemiddeld aantal kinderen per kleuterklas daalt van 17,5 naar 16,2. Voor het lager onderwijs reflecteert deze optrekking van de omkadering in een daling in de gemiddelde leerlingen/leraar-verhouding van 17,0 naar 16,8.

Profiteren van grotere klassen?

Onderzoek dat nagaat of zulke klassen-verkleining ook zorgt voor verbeterde prestaties bij leerlingen, geeft teleurstellende resultaten. Er werden gegevens geanalyseerd van 3415 leerlingen uit het vierde leerjaar basisonderwijs in Vlaanderen. De resultaten tonen aan dat er geen uitgesproken verband bestaat tussen de grootte van de klas waarin leerlingen zitten, en de prestaties die ze behalen op een leesvaardigheidstest. Bij dit onderzoek werd er nochtans rekening gehouden met kenmerken van de leerling, de klas en de school, die de resultaten zouden kunnen beïnvloeden. Onderzoekers beweren zelfs dat leerlingen zouden baten bij grotere klasgroottes. Wanneer leerlingen omringd worden door meer medestudenten van een gelijkaardig niveau, zouden ze meer van elkaar opsteken.

Voor leerkrachten zal het nieuw omkaderings-systeem welgekomen zijn, de werkdruk zal hierdoor wellicht verminderen. Het onderzoek toont aan dat de klasgrootte geen voorspeller is voor leerprestaties. Wil dit zeggen dat men momenteel investeert in iets wat mogelijk zijn doel mist? De vraag blijft welke motieven doorwegen in de beleidsvoering.
