Bent u al ingecheckt op foursquare?

Wie dacht dat hij met facebook en twitter alle varianten van sociale media kende, heeft het mis. Foursquare is een nieuwe vorm van sociale media, namelijk mobile social media. Het is een gratis applicatie die u kan downloaden op uw smartphone. Foursquaregebruikers laten hun facebookvrienden en twittervolgers weten waar ze zich bevinden. Toch blijkt uit onderzoek dat weinig Vlaamse studenten foursquare gebruiken (slechts 15,2 % van de 883 respondenten).

Foursquare maakt het mogelijk om virtueel in te checken op locaties waar men zich bevindt. Fervente foursquaregebruikers willen zo vaak mogelijk op een bepaalde locatie inchecken om burgemeester te worden van deze locatie. Zo krijgen burgemeesters van bepaalde fastfoodketens extra kortingen.  Verder is het mogelijk om de dichtstbijzijnde restaurants of andere handelszaken te zoeken. Een foursquaregebruiker getuigt: “Het is leuk om overal  in te checken met foursquare. Ik laat mijn vrienden weten waar ik me bevindt. Als ik op restaurant ga, quoteer ik uitgebreid mijn menu. Het is in feite een sociaal spel dat steeds leuker wordt wanneer meer van mijn vrienden eraan deelnemen. Ik houd van de  strijd om de burgemeester te worden van iedere locatie (bioscopen, discotheken, restaurants,…).”

Ook voor marketeers is deze applicatie uitermate interessant. De gebruiker deelt heel wat informatie mee zoals zijn locatie, leeftijd, geslacht, interesses, enzovoort. Deze informatie gebruiken adverteerders om gepaste reclameboodschappen te sturen naar de consument. Foursquare staat immers toe op het juiste moment en de juiste plaats reclame te ontvangen. Sophie Van Vlierberghe, masterstudente Strategische Communicatie aan de Universiteit Antwerpen, verklaart: “Consumenten worden overladen met allerlei reclameboodschappen. Adverteerders ervaren dat het steeds moeilijker wordt om consumenten te bereiken en interesse op te wekken voor de geadverteerde producten. Wanneer marketeers persoonlijke informatie van consumenten verzamelen, kunnen ze reclameboodschappen sturen die aangepast zijn aan de preferenties en noden van de consument. De consument ontvangt dus reclame op zijn of haar maat.”  

Privacy?

Sophie Van Vlierberghe peilde in haar masterproef bij Antwerpse universiteitsstudenten naar de intentie om foursquare al dan niet te gebruiken. Marketeers moeten foursquare vooral promoten door het plezier van deze applicatie te benadrukken. Bestaande en potentiële foursquaregebruikers zijn eerder geneigd om foursquare te gebruiken voor het plezier. Nuttige argumenten, zoals het verkrijgen van een korting, is geen grote stimulans om deze app te gebruiken.

Vermits foursquare de locatie van de gebruikers mededeelt op het internet, rijzen er vele vragen over privacygevoelige informatie. Toch blijkt uit het onderzoek dat foursquaregebruikers graag persoonlijke informatie vrijgeven, indien ze er nuttige zaken (bv. kortingsbonnen) in ruil krijgen.

Wordt foursquare een even groot succes als facebook en twitter? Momenteel heeft foursquare tien miljoen geregistreerde gebruikers wereldwijd. Foursquare is zeer populair in de VSA, maar ondervindt veel concurrentie binnen de eigen sector. Uit voorgaand onderzoek blijkt dat men eerder sceptisch staat ten aanzien van mobile social media. Vele smartphonegebruikers zien het niet zitten om zoveel privacy vrij te geven.
