Een nieuwe trend in het reclamelandschap: adverteren op de gsm, ook wel mobile advertising genoemd. De boomende verkoop van smartphones klinkt bij mobiele adverteerders als muziek in de oren. Maar staat de consument hierop te wachten? Recent onderzoek van de sectie Bedrijfscommunicatie aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven deed een poging om de mening van de Belgische consument te achterhalen.

Waar de consument ook gaat of staat, de kans dat hij reclame-uitingen opmerkt, is zeer groot. Adverteerders stellen zich dan ook de vraag in hoeverre hun boodschappen nog de aandacht trekken. Als gevolg moeten zij hun strategieën continu aanpassen en verbeteren in de hoop relevante, enter-tainende en informatieve boodschappen te ontwikkelen. Eén van de recente technieken bestaat in het adverteren via de gsm. Met alsmaar meer mobiele telefoongebruikers dan er consumenten zijn en technologische ontwikkelingen in mobiele media, zien adverteerders een oplossing om de con-sument opnieuw te bereiken. Via één-op-één communicatie doet mobile advertising namelijk opportuniteiten ontstaan voor inter-activiteit tussen consument en merk. Er is echter ook een keerzijde aan de medaille: de mobiele telefoon is een zeer persoonlijk item waardoor de consument mobiele reclame kan opvatten als een invasie in zijn privéleven. Het is daarom belangrijk eens te luisteren naar wat de consument er van denkt, om zo adverteer-ders op weg te helpen om op een gepaste manier mobiel te adverteren.

Consumer Centric ModelHet Consumer Centric Model of Succesful Mobile Marketing van Varnali, Toker & Yilmaz (2009), gaat er van uit dat persoonsvariabelen, boodschapvariabelen, mediumgerelateerde variabelen en bron-gerelateerde variabelen van invloed zijn op de attitude van de consument ten opzichte van mobile advertising. Omwille van de dominante invloed die de situatie en context uitoefenen op de perceptie van mobiele reclame (Wehmeyer, 2007), werd voor dit onderzoek het model uitgebreid met een extra categorie, namelijk contextuele variabelen. Met andere woorden, de perceptie van mobiele reclame kan afhangen van persoonlijke kenmerken (bv. nood aan privacy, innovatiefheid, …), de vorm en inhoud van een boodschap, de situatie of omgeving waarin consumenten een boodschap ontvangen,  capaciteiten en gebruiksgemak van een mobiele telefoon en, tenslotte, de afzender van de boodschap.

Methode

De sectie Bedrijfscommunicatie aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven ging vervolgens via twee focusgroepen van telkens acht personen tussen de 18 en 24 jaar oud, op zoek naar de invloed die de verschillende variabelen uitoefenen op de perceptie van mobiele reclame. Om het onderlinge belang na te gaan, werd bovendien getracht een hiërarchie aan te brengen in de belangrijkste bezwaren en randvoorwaarden van invloed op effecti-viteit en ervaren intrusie van mobile advertising. Omdat persoonskenmerken variëren per persoon en gezien de kwalitatieve aard van het onderzoek, zijn persoonsvariabelen niet opgenomen in het onderzoek.

Hiërarchie van bezwaren en voorwaarden

De respondenten stelden een top drie samen van enerzijds de belangrijkste bezwaren ten opzichte van mobiele reclame en anderzijds de belangrijkste voorwaarden ter acceptatie ervan. Een bezwaar of voorwaarde op een nummer één positie kreeg drie punten toegekend, op een tweede positie twee punten en op een derde positie één punt.

Ask permission

De bezwaren die het meest terugkeren, betreffen de frequentie (overload), privacyschending en de ontvangst van ongevraagde berichten. Bijgevolg verwijzen de respondenten naar het vooraf vragen van toestemming als nummer één voorwaarde ter acceptatie. Daarnaast vinden zij het belangrijk steeds een voor zichzelf relevante boodschap te krijgen. Toch willen zij niet dat adverteerders hen persoonlijk aan-spreken en zijn zij niet geneigd persoonlijke voorkeuren of interesses kenbaar te maken uit vrees voor spam.

Keep it simple

Consumenten verkiezen tekstuele bood-schappen boven multimediaboodschappen. Aan de ene kant kan multimediaal aantrekkelijker zijn, maar aan de andere kant roept het sneller de notie van reclame op. Wat de lengte van een SMS-reclame betreft, gaat de voorkeur uit naar een kort en to the point bericht met een link naar meer informatie. Na doorvragen blijkt dat een link veel vrijblijvender is en een langere boodschap gewoonweg niet zou aanzetten tot lezen. Hoewel eerder research aantoont dat entertainment in reclame vaak een positieve invloed heeft, zijn de respon-denten daar slechts deels van overtuigd. Als de adverteerder er namelijk niet slaagt in zijn opzet om  origineel of grappig te zijn, kan de reclame snel gaan irriteren. Uiteindelijk blijken vormgevingsaspecten en entertainmentgehalte geen doorslaggeven-de voorwaarden ter acceptatie te zijn. Daarentegen wil de consument als één van de belangrijkste voorwaarden een voordeel gekoppeld zien aan de reclame. Mobiele ads die hierdoor een meerwaarde bieden, zouden meer appreciatie wekken en opdringerigheid verminderen.

… and don’t push me

Het lijkt er op dat consumenten location-based advertising niet appreciëren. De respondenten houden er niet van dat adverteerders hun locatie traceren voor reclamedoeleinden en vinden het overbodig om tijdens het winkelen nog eens extra in aanraking te komen met reclame op hun gsm. Het grijpt in op het privéleven en zou bovendien een negatieve impact hebben als men de afzender niet kent. Een boodschap die van een gekende organisatie komt, zou minder opdringerig overkomen. Het lijkt zelfs dat mensen het liefst door hun vrienden geïnformeerd worden. Dit biedt al een eerste filter op relevantie en komt beter over. Daarnaast willen consumenten zelf initiatief nemen en zien zij Bluetooth als een acceptabele oplossing. Door de mogelijkheid om deze technologie in- en uit te schakelen, hebben zij meer controle om boodschappen al dan niet te ontvangen.

Illusion or solution?

Uiteindelijk kunnen we zeggen dat mobiel adverteren zeker geen illusie is. De mobiele telefoon biedt misschien niet zozeer dé oplossing bij uitstek om reclamevermijding tegen te gaan, hij biedt wel de mogelijkheid om het aankoopproces te faciliteren. Uit de eerste reacties blijkt dat de Belgische consument niet is opgezet om naast de bestaande media ook op zijn mobiele telefoon ongevraagd bedolven te worden met reclame-initiatieven. Een veelbelovende oplossing ligt daarom in het gebruik van augmented reality. Dit concept combineert virtuele data met de echte fysieke wereld en stelt de consument in de mogelijkheid om te interageren met producten en omgeving. Dankzij deze technologie zullen consumenten met behulp van een smartphone makkelijk, snel, efficiënt en vooral wanneer zij dat zelf wensen, hun informatiebehoeften bij het aankoopproces kunnen ondersteunen.

Best practices

Adverteerders die de mobiele route willen bewandelen, houden best volgende punten in het achterhoofd.

·     Vraag de consument te allen tijde expliciete toestemming alvorens mobiele reclame uit te sturen

·     Hou de boodschap kort en relevant met een link naar meer info (less is more)

·     Bied een meerwaarde door aan de reclame een voordeel of promotie te koppelen

·     Beperk de frequentie en communiceer een boodschap slechts één maal

·     Communiceer tijdens de vooravond en minstens een dag op voorhand in het geval van een event

·     Hou interactie kosteloos en vermeld dit ook duidelijk

·     Maak het de consument makkelijk door interactie eenvoudig te houden

·     Zorg steeds voor een duidelijke en eenvoudige opt-out mogelijkheid

·     Beperk pushreclame, kies (op locatie) eerder voor een trigger buiten de gsm

·     Stimuleer het doorsturen naar vrienden (social sharing) met behulp van incentives
