Positieve psychologie

Liefde en welzijn krijgen recent vanuit de positieve psychologie meer aandacht. De focus verschuift hierbij van het herstellen van psychologische schade, pathologie en abnormaal gedrag naar het welzijn en het geluk van de mens (Seligman, 2002).

Liefde en vier dimensies van het bestaan

Het concept liefde lijkt misschien wel één ding te zijn, maar neemt in werkelijkheid vele vormen aan (Clough, 2006). Het begrip liefde wordt hier dan ook gehanteerd in ruimere zin, als een vorm van verbondenheid. We beperken ons dus niet tot “romantische liefde” maar nemen verschillende soorten en vormen van liefde in rekening. In navolging van Leijssen (2007) en van Deurzen (1997) worden vier dimensies van het bestaan gebruikt als kader voor het belichten van diverse vormen van liefde. De fysieke, sociale, psychische en spirituele dimensie zijn domeinen waarin elk individu in meer of mindere mate kan investeren. Existentieel welzijn veronderstelt een evenwichtige investering in elk domein.

Voorafgaand aan de pilootstudie werden liefde en aan liefde gerelateerde concepten uit de psychologische en filosofische vakliteratuur theoretisch verkend binnen elke dimensie van het bestaan.

Binnen de fysieke dimensie blijkt liefde bijvoorbeeld in staat om de schadelijke impact van stress op het lichaam te reduceren (Cohen & Pressman, 2006). Binnen de sociale dimensie kan liefde onder andere sociale steun en gehechtheid omvatten. Binnen de psychische dimensie blijkt dat naast liefde ontvangen ook het geven van liefde bijdraagt tot de veerkracht van een individu. Liefde geven kan zelfs bijdragen tot het opbouwen van vaardigheden zoals emotieregulatie en probleemoplossende vaardigheden (Cohn, Fredrickson, Brown, Mikels & Conway, 2009). Binnen de spirituele dimensie krijgt onder andere dankbaarheid aandacht. Dankbaarheid betreft niet enkel de relatie tussen twee personen. Het zorgt eveneens voor een verbondenheid en wederkerigheid binnen een samenleving (Emmons & Shelton, 2002). Naast dankbaarheid sluit ook ‘Liefde voor het leven’ aan bij de spirituele dimensie. Dit concept werd in de psychologie geïntroduceerd door Abdel-Khalek (2007) en kan beschouwd worden als een positieve attitude ten opzichte van het leven, van het leven houden en de beleving van schoonheid, geluk, hoop en voldoening.

Pilootstudie: liefde voor het leven en welzijn

Deze pilootstudie kadert in een ruimer onderzoeksproject binnen de K.U.L. specialisatie ‘Counseling en coaching in existentieel welzijn’. Concreet wordt het verband tussen een specifieke vorm van liefde, namelijk ‘Liefde voor het leven’ en verscheidene maten van welzijn onderzocht. De centrale onderzoeksvraag van deze studie luidt: ‘Is er een verband tussen liefde voor het leven en welzijn?’.

De participanten van deze studie zijn de deelnemers van voornoemde opleiding tijdens het academiejaar 2009-2010.  De selecte steekproef (N=20) bestaat uit 4 mannelijke en 16 vrouwelijke deelnemers. De gemiddelde leeftijd is 48 jaar (SD= 9, range 24-60). De opleiding ‘Counseling en coaching in existentieel welzijn’ kadert binnen een Europees project waarin standaard een ‘welzijnsbatterij’ gebruikt wordt die volgende variabelen meet: levenstevredenheid (Satisfaction With Life Scale; Diener, Emmons, Larsen, Griffen, 1985), depressie (Patiëntengezondheidsvragenlijst-9; Rizzo et al., 2000), angst (Gegeneraliseerde Angststoornis vragenlijst; Spitzer, Kroenke, Williams & Löwe 2006), welzijn (Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale; Tennant et al., 2007) en spiritualiteit (Spirituele Attitude en Interesse Lijst; De Jager Meezenbroeck et al., 2009). Het verband tussen deze maten van welzijn en liefde voor het leven (Love of Life Scale; Abdel-Khalek, 2007) wordt hier onderzocht. Bovendien werd aan de deelnemers gevraagd drie kernwoorden te geven die zij associëren met liefde. Er werd nagegaan in welke mate deze kernwoorden ondergebracht kunnen worden bij verschillende soorten liefde (subschalen van de ‘Love Attitude Scale’, Hendrick, Hendrick, & Dicke, 1998).

Van de kernwoorden die de deelnemers van de opleiding associëren met liefde, werd 94% ondergebracht bij Eros (gekenmerkt door passie, intense gevoelens die gepaard gaan met een sterke fysieke aantrekkingskracht), Storge (gekenmerkt door gedeelde waarden, intimiteit, vriendschap en toewijding op lange termijn) of Agape (gekenmerkt door onbaatzuchtigheid en altruïsme, liefde waarbij men zichzelf opoffert voor het welzijn van de ander). Meer dan de helft van alle kernwoorden kon ondergebracht worden bij Storge. Deze liefdesvorm lijkt het meest vertegenwoordigd bij de deelnemers. Samen met de bevindingen van andere auteurs (Regan, Kocan en Whitlock,1998; Fehr, 1993, beide geciteerd in Hendrick & Hendrick, 2002) zouden we kunnen concluderen dat mensen vriendschappelijke liefde als meer prototypisch beschouwen dan gepassioneerde liefde. Het kan boeiend zijn om dit verband nader te onderzoeken bij een ruimer publiek.

Verder wijzen de resultaten van de pilootstudie in de richting van een positief verband tussen liefde voor het leven en levenstevredenheid, welzijn en spiritualiteit. De mate waarin iemand een positieve houding aanneemt ten aanzien van het leven en voldoening, hoop, geluk en schoonheid beleeft, hangt samen met de mate waarin deze persoon tevreden is over het leven en met het welzijn van die persoon. De samenhang tussen liefde voor het leven en spiritualiteit lijkt voornamelijk bepaald te worden door het positieve verband tussen liefde voor het leven en zingeving enerzijds en liefde voor het leven en vertrouwen anderzijds. Zodoende gaat ‘van het leven houden’ samen met ‘het leven als betekenisvol ervaren’ en ‘een zeker vertrouwen hebben dat men het leven met zijn mooie en moeilijke momenten aankan’. De band tussen liefde voor het leven en welzijn werd eveneens onderzocht door in te zoomen op de samenhang met depressie en angst. Het lijkt vanzelfsprekend dat hopeloosheid, een gevoel te falen, gebrek aan energie, doodsgedachten en andere depressieve symptomen lijnrecht tegenover liefde voor het leven staan. De pilootstudie lijkt deze hypothese te bevestigen. Verder verwachtten we dat een algemene angsttoestand (gespannen zijn, rusteloosheid, tobben, snel geïrriteerd raken) het functioneren kan beperken (Emmelkamp, Hoogduin, & van den Hout, 2000) en niet verenigbaar is met liefde voor het leven. In deze pilootstudie werd het veronderstelde verband tussen angst en liefde voor het leven (Abdel-Khalek, 2007) echter niet vastgesteld. Toekomstige studies zullen de relatie tussen angst en liefde voor het leven nader moeten onderzoeken.

Wat voorafging was een verkenning van liefde als factor van existentieel welzijn. Het differentiëren van liefde binnen elke dimensie van het menselijk bestaan en de metingen van liefde voor het leven en welzijn in de pilootstudie geven een inspirerende aanzet voor toekomstig onderzoek.
