A detailed analysis of laminations in the Late Pleistocene sedimentary record of Laguna Parrillar, southern Patagonia, Chile

 

LAGUNA PARRILLAR: DE GESCHIEDENIS VAN EEN MEER BLOOTGELEGD

De mens speelt een actieve rol in ‘Global Warming’. Dat is door steeds toenemend bewijs een algemeen aanvaard feit geworden in wetenschappelijke kringen. Echter, veel interacties binnen het klimaatsysteem zijn nog onvoldoende gekend. Het meeste klimaatonderzoek speelt zich in hoofdzaak af op het Noordelijk Halfrond. Zuid Patagonië is van bijzonder belang in het klimaatonderzoek omdat het wetenschappers in staat stelt ook terrestrische klimaatgegevens van het Zuidelijk Halfrond te verzamelen in een dominant oceanisch domein.

Het klimaatsysteem wordt gekenmerkt door verschillende componenten (atmosfeer, vegetatie, ijskappen, landoppervlak en oceaan) die met elkaar interageren en waarop ook externe factoren inwerken. Factoren zoals veranderingen in de stralingskracht van de zon, de vorm van de Aardbaan en de plaatbewegingen op Aarde. Verder kan een verandering waardoor het klimaat warmer of kouder wordt bepaalde effecten veroorzaken die ervoor kunnen zorgen dat die initiële opwarming of afkoeling verder versterkt (positieve feedback) of juist afgezwakt (negatieve feedback) wordt. Om al die interacties beter te begrijpen hebben klimaatwetenschappers nood aan meer inzicht in deze systemen. Hiervoor gaan ze op zoek naar plaatsen die hen die informatie kunnen verschaffen. Sommigen onderzoeken oude koralen of de gelaagde sedimenten in oceanen. Anderen bestuderen boomringen, ijskappen of gelaagde meersedimenten op het land. 

Dit onderzoek werd uitgevoerd op de gelamineerde meersedimenten van Laguna Parrillar, een middelmatig groot meer gelegen in Zuid-Patagonië (Chili). Van de 7 m lange kern, genomen doorheen de meersedimenten, werd het deel tussen 2 en 4,20 m diepte bestudeerd overeenstemmend met een ouderdom van 29000 tot 41000 jaar.  

Gelamineerde meersedimenten verschaffen zeer hoge resolutie klimaatinformatie en maken het mogelijk zowel de menselijke impact op het klimaat te bestuderen als klimaatvariabiliteit in zijn geheel te begrijpen. Meren zijn interessante studieobjecten omdat ze klein zijn ten opzichte van de oceaan en daardoor snel reageren op externe veranderingen en archieven vormen voor lokale en regionale klimaatveranderingen.

De hoofddoelstellingen van dit onderzoek waren: 1) een vormingsmodel voor de laminaties opstellen; 2) computer-en microscoopanalyse met elkaar vergelijken; 3) detecteren van klimaatcycliciteiten.

In het labo werd het sediment opgedeeld in kleinere blokjes, in aluminium bakjes geplaatst en bevroren in vloeibare stikstof. Hierna werden ze onder vacuüm (i.e. in afwezigheid van lucht) in een vriesdroger geplaatst voor twee dagen. Na deze procedure kon het sediment doordrenkt worden met een kunstmatig hars, resulterend in blokjes van geïmpregneerd sediment. Deze vormden de basis voor het maken van slijpplaatjes (i.e. sneetjes sediment van enkele micrometers dik, aangebracht tussen twee glazen plaatjes) gebruikt voor microscoopanalyse. Het oppervlak van deze blokjes werd ingescand om digitale afbeeldingen te bekomen voor computeranalyse.

Om de eerste doelstelling te bereiken werd één van de slijpplaatjes bestudeerd onder een petrografische microscoop (i.e. microscoop voor het beschrijven van gesteenten) en gebruikt als referentie voor de rest van de sedimentkern. De meest fijnkorrelige laminaties die werden aangetroffen hadden een erg donker uitzicht en bestaan uit zeer fijne silt. De iets grovere bestonden uit grove silt en hadden een minder donker uitzicht. De grofste lagen bestonden uit zand en silt en hebben een bleek uitzicht. Met behulp van de Wet van Stokes (i.e. wiskundige formule voor de bezinkingssnelheid van kleine deeltjes in een vloeistof) en het feit dat Laguna Parrillar tussen 29000 en 41000 jaar geleden omringd was door ijskappen, kon een vormingsmodel opgesteld worden voor de laminaties.

In de lente vormt zich smeltwater, afkomstig van de naburige ijskappen, dat in staat is om sediment naar het meer te vervoeren. Volgens de wet van Stokes zullen de grootste sedimentdeeltjes sneller bezinken zodat dus de silt-zand laagjes het eerst zullen afgezet worden in het meer. De meer fijnkorrelige lagen kunnen door waterturbulenties in het meer, tijdens de lente en de zomer, niet bezinken. Wanneer het meer dichtvriest in de herfst/winter verdwijnen deze turbulenties zodat ook de fijnste sedimenten zich op de meerbodem kunnen settelen. Sommige gelamineerde meersedimenten zijn seizoenaal waarbij de combinatie van één grove laag en één fijne laag (i.e. een couplet) precies één jaar voorstelt. Echter, de laminaties in Laguna Parrillar zijn niet seizoenaal. We vonden ongeveer 1300 dergelijke couplets (via de computer- en microscoopanalyse) over een tijdspanne van ongeveer 12000 jaar.

Met X-straal fluorescentie (i.e. analysetechniek voor het bepalen van type en hoeveelheid van een bepaald chemisch element) bekwamen we elementratio’s die korrelgrootteveranderingen en gletsjerfluctuaties in de omgeving van het meer uitdrukken. De log(Fe/Ti) ratio bleek laag (i.e. hoge titaan hoeveelheden) te zijn voor de grofkorrelige lagen en gradueel te stijgen over de fijnkorrelige lagen. Tussen 41000 en 38000 jaar geleden observeerden we een sterke afname in het aantal lente/zomers dat het meer ijsvrij was. Van 38000 tot 29000 jaar geleden toont de ratio een dalende trend en hebben we een kouder klimaat (eventueel met meer sneeuwval) en groeiende, meer actieve gletsjers. Warmere periodes met minder actieve gletsjers (bv. zomer) geven hoge ratiowaarden, koudere periodes met meer actieve gletsjers (bv. winter) geven lage ratiowaarden. Vanaf 38000 jaar geleden duidt de dalende trend op een lange termijn afkoeling, dominerend bovenop de gewone seizoenale variaties in gletsjeractiviteit.

De dikte van de verschillende laminaties werd opgemeten via zowel computer- als microscoopanalyse en met elkaar vergeleken. De resultaten bleken gelijkaardig, echter met kleine verschillen die te maken hadden met de karakteristieken van de laminaties (bv. te dunne laagjes of te gekromde laagjes) en/of met de karakteristieken van de techniek (bv. onmogelijkheid om in te zoomen of om het beeld te draaien). Opmerkelijke dikteveranderingen komen voor tijdens gebeurtenissen in het Noordelijk Halfrond, met name tijdens de Heinrich events en de Dansgaard-Oeschger cycli, beiden expressies van gebeurtenissen waarbij massaal ijsbergen in zee worden vrijgelaten door een klimaatverandering. Het klimaatsignaal in Zuid Patagonië bleek synchroon te zijn met het Antarctisch domein.

Via spectraalanalyse (i.e. techniek om cycli te detecteren in een dataset) konden we de cycli extraheren die in het sediment opgeslagen zitten. We troffen El Niño Southern Oscillation cycli aan (11-13 jaar en 15-20 jaar) en Antarctic Oscillation cycli (38 en 24 jaar).

Alhoewel nieuw onderzoek ons steeds meer inzicht verschaft, blijft het klimaatsysteem een erg complex iets. Echter, de Zuid Patagonische meren zijn zeer veelbelovend voor het toekomstige klimaatonderzoek.
