Samenvatting

Doordat videogames zijn uitgegroeid tot een ware cultuur, hebben zij de aandacht opgewekt van onderzoekers in diverse domeinen, waaronder de ‘Cultural Studies’. De onderzoekers in deze groep stellen dat populaire cultuurvormen, zoals videogames, even veel educatieve waarde hebbe als de traditionele ‘hoge’ cultuur. Binnen deze onderzoeksrichting ontwikkelde Kenneth Burke een theorie en een methode voor de analyse van retoriek, namelijk de ‘Dramatistische Pentad’.

 

In deze masterproef ga ik, gebaseerd op werk van Bourgonjon (2008), na of de Pentad van Burke (1969) bruikbaar is om videogames met een eerder open verhaallijn, i.c. Civilization IV: Colonization, retorisch te bestuderen. Op basis daarvan bespreek ik de bruikbaarheid van de Pentad en van Civilization in het onderwijs. Hiermee wil ik een theoretische inleiding bieden, die kan aanzetten tot aandacht voor retoriek en games in de onderwijspraktijk.

 

Daartoe voer ik onderzoek op drie niveaus. Op een eerste niveau analyseer ik de retoriek in Civilization IV: Colonization met behulp van de Pentad. Op het tweede niveau koppel ik de inzichten uit deze analyse aan de attitudes die jongeren tegenover de game aannemen. Die leid ik af uit de discussies op drie Civilization-fora. Op het derde niveau bespreek ik, bij wijze van discussie, hoe de thema’s en beeldvorming uit de game en de houdingen van jongeren op de fora betekenisvol kunnen zijn in de context van het onderwijs.

 

Uit mijn analyse komt naar voor dat de Pentad spelers en leerlingen kan aanzetten games vanuit diverse perspectieven te benaderen. Bovendien kan werken met de Pentad ook aanzetten om andere symbolische situaties vanuit een retorisch perspectief te bekijken. Met betrekking tot onderwijs blijkt dat games als Civilization IV: Colonization zinvol kunnen zijn voor geschiedenisonderwijs. Met behulp van de Pentad blijken perspectieven op geschiedenis naar voren te komen die kunnen aanzetten tot discussie in de klas. Meer onderzoek naar de praktische toepassing van de Pentad en van videogames in het onderwijs is echter wenselijk.
