Respons van aquatische organismen op metaalverontreiniging in natuurlijke waterlopen: vergelijking diatomeeën en macro-invertebraten

Metaalvervuiling in rivieren? De natuur als meetinstrument!


De aanwezigheid van zware metalen vormt anno 2007 een hardnekkig probleem voor het leven in onze rivieren. Wetenschappers zijn er echter nog steeds niet uit welke effecten deze metalen allemaal te weeg kunnen brengen. En wanneer is een rivier nu juist “vervuild”? Piepkleine waterorganismen zouden hier wel eens het antwoord op kunnen geven.

 

Zware metalen, een blijvend probleem

Vele Vlaamse rivieren bevatten vandaag de dag nog steeds hoge gehalten aan zware metalen. Dit is het gevolg van jarenlange lozingen in rivierwater door menselijke activiteiten, zowel door industriële processen als huishoudelijk afval. Metalen zijn chemische elementen met een zware dichtheid. Ze zijn persistent, dit betekent dat ze niet biologisch afgebroken kunnen worden, en zich dus in de natuur zullen opstapelen of bioaccumuleren. Organismen die in contact komen met metalen zullen deze elementen niet kunnen afbreken en ze ophopen in hun weefsel. Wanneer er te veel metalen worden opgenomen kan dit voor vele planten en dieren resulteren in ziekteverschijnselen met soms de dood tot gevolg. Ook de mens is gevoelig aan zware metalen. Zo is bijvoorbeeld het element cadmium zeer giftig. Het kan problemen veroorzaken aan de nieren en longkanker verwekken.

 

De natuur als meetinstrument

Hoewel er al veel onderzoek is verricht naar de effecten van zware metalen bij zowel planten als dieren, zijn wetenschappers het nog altijd niet eens over hoe gevaarlijk metalen in de natuur kunnen zijn. Men kan wel metalen meten in het water, maar dit zegt nog niets over het effect dat ze zullen hebben. Dit alles uit zich in het moeizaam vastleggen van omgevingsnormen voor zware metalen, want: “Vanaf welke concentratie zullen metalen nu juist giftig zijn?”.

Om op deze vraag een antwoord te vinden kan men gebruik maken van levende organismen of gemeenschappen als bio-indicator. Dit wil zeggen dat er wordt gekeken naar afwijkingen in het organisme of naar de aan- of afwezigheid van sommige gevoelige organismen in de omgeving. Dit zal namelijk iets zeggen over het effect van de vervuiling. Zo zijn bepaalde organismen van nature veel gevoeliger voor zware metalen dan andere, en zal bijvoorbeeld de aanwezigheid van veel metaalongevoelige soorten zoals muggenlarven en borstelwormen aangeven dat de rivier door metalen vervuild is. Op die manier wordt de natuur dus zelf als meetinstrument gebruikt!

Maarten De Jonge ging in zijn thesis de respons van waterorganismen op metaalverontreiniging na door gebruik te maken van macro-invertebraten en diatomeeën. Macro-invertebraten zijn kleine, nog net met het oog zichtbare ongewervelde waterdiertjes, die in elke rivier terug te vinden zijn. Hiertoe worden ondermeer waterkevers, slakjes, bloedzuigers en muggenlarven gerekend. Diatomeeën zijn daarentegen microscopisch kleine algen, gekenmerkt door een silicium omhulsel. Diatomeeën kunnen niet bewegen en leven voornamelijk op de bodem en op vast substraat zoals stenen of paaltjes in het water. Ze zijn enkel door middel van hun omhulsel van elkaar te onderscheiden.

In de praktijk zullen macro-invertebraten en diatomeeën gebruikt worden onder de vorm van biologische indices. Deze indices worden bepaald door de aan- of afwezigheid van bepaalde gevoelige soorten en resulteren op die manier in een score die weergeeft hoe proper of vervuild de rivier is.

 

Studie op de Dommel

Als studierivier voor de thesis van Maarten werd de Limburgse rivier de Dommel gekozen, welke sinds lang erg vervuild is door metalen. Op acht plaatsen op deze rivier werden er telkens metaalconcentraties gemeten in het water en werd er bemonsterd op de aanwezige macro-invertebraten en diatomeeën. Hierbij waren er twee plaatsen met lage metaalconcentraties, die dienden ter controle, en zes plaatsen met hogere metaalgehalten. Alle soorten van beide gemeenschappen werden gedetermineerd en op basis hiervan werden verschillende biologische indices berekend.

En wat bleek: Aan de hand van de gemeten metaalgehalten en de gedetermineerde organismen werd duidelijk dat de soortensamenstelling van de diatomeeën erg varieert afhankelijk van de metaalconcentratie in het water. Zo bevatten plaatsen met lage concentraties voornamelijk metaalgevoelige diatomeeën en waren op plaatsen met hogere metaalconcentraties veel metaalongevoelige of tolerante soorten terug te vinden. Bij de macro-invertebraten gaven de biologische indices lage scores aan bij hoge metaalvervuiling en hogere scores in de minder vervuilde delen. Hiermee werd dus aangetoond dat zowel diatomeeën als macro-invertebraten goede biologische indicatoren vormen voor de aanwezigheid van zware metalen in rivieren.

 

Indicatoren voor de toekomst

De aanwezigheid van bepaalde gevoelige of ongevoelige soorten kan ons dus wijzer maken over de mogelijke vervuiling in rivieren. Bio-indicatoren kunnen niet alleen aanwijzingen geven over metaalvervuiling maar geven informatie over een hele reeks van vervuilende stoffen. Door regelmatige bemonstering kan dus nagegaan worden of er sprake is van een mogelijke vervuiling en ook onderzocht worden bij welke concentratie er effecten zullen optreden. Macro-invertebraten en diatomeeën zorgen er voor dat we meer en meer te weten komen over de effecten van zware metalen en dat er gewerkt kan worden aan beschermingsmaatregelen voor het leven in het water. Op die manier dragen deze kleine organismen dus bij tot de bescherming van andere planten en dieren en vormen zij een natuurlijk alarmsysteem tegen de vervuiling door zware metalen.
