Clandestiene opgravingen, een universeel probleem van alle tijden.

 

Archeologische opgravingen maken slechts een klein deel uit van de archeologische wetenschap. Ze zijn de enige manier waardoor zekerheid kan verworven worden over theorieën, die het verleden trachten te reconstrueren. Hierbij mag niet vergeten worden dat opgraven een éénmalige en destructieve methode is om kennis te vergaren. Opgravingen dienen bijgevolg zorgvuldig uitgevoerd te worden. Het ontbreken van tijd en geld echter maakt het zeer moeilijk om overal wetenschappelijke opgravingen uit te voeren. Veel plaatsten zijn daarom niet of nauwelijks onderzocht binnen de archeologie en vallen ten prooi aan de technologische vooruitgang en de clandestiene opgravingen. Deze boosdoeners vormen dan ook een continue bedreiging voor het archeologisch patrimonium en veroorzaken onnoemelijk veel schade aan enerzijds de objecten van de site en anderzijds aan de site zelf. Het is wel zo dat de clandestiene opgravingen vooral een probleem vormen voor zogenaamde bronlanden. Dat zijn landen waar een rijk cultureel erfgoed aanwezig is en waar nauwelijks het eigen patrimonium beschermd kan worden, in tegenstelling tot de marktlanden. Bovendien komt door de clandestiene opgravingen het wetenschappelijk onderzoek in het gedrang omdat veel informatie over het verleden verloren is gegaan. Eenmaal de site leeggeroofd is, zwerven de voorwerpen de wereld rond tot ze uiteindelijk in een museum of privé-collectie belanden en misschien wel nooit meer het daglicht zien. In die tussentijd zijn ze het handelscircuit doorgelopen, waar hun waarde alsmaar kon stijgen. Dit probleem en de daaraan gekoppelde praktijken heeft geleid tot een hels debat, dat nog steeds aan de gang is. Oplossingen lijken dan ook niet onmiddellijk in het verschiet omdat niet alle belangen te verenigen zijn.

 

De clandestiene opgravingen in het gebied rond Jiroft.

 

Jiroft, een stadje gelegen ten zuiden van de provinciehoofdstad van de provincie Kerman in Iran, heeft zijn naam gegeven aan een cultuur die een reeks sites langs de Halil rivier omvat. Een vijftal jaar geleden kwamen bij toeval voorwerpen aan het licht, die bijzonder waardevol bleken te zijn. De ontdekking van de bronstijd sites gaf kort daarop aanleiding tot systematische plunderingen, die tot op heden zijn blijven duren. Aanvankelijk werden weinig maatregelen genomen om de plunderingen tegen te gaan met als gevolg dat ondertussen heel wat voorwerpen illegaal het land uitgesmokkeld zijn. Een groot deel echter van die objecten kon in beslag worden genomen en is nu in handen van professor dokter Y. Madjidzadeh. Samen met een team van archeologen heeft hij de objecten bestudeerd. Naast vaatwerk in ceramiek en chloriet, zijn tal van small finds onderzocht en gepubliceerd in een catalogus. De catalogus moet de archeologische wereld en de kunstwereld bewust maken van het bestaan van de voorwerpen, als ook de verkoop van gelijkaardige voorwerpen tegengaan. Naast de publicatie van de catalogus houdt professor Madjidzadeh lezingen om de plaatselijke bevolking in te lichten over het belang van de voorwerpen. Want het zijn zij die als gevolg van een klein inkomen het plunderen noodzakelijk achten om te voorzien in hun levensonderhoud. Dankzij de lezingen wordt gewezen op de economische waarde van het eigen patrimonium, zodat deze op lange termijn voor inkomsten kunnen zorgen en niet alleen op korte termijn. Sinds een tweetal jaar heeft ook de overheid maatregelen genomen tegen de plunderingen. Nochtans zijn deze slechts van korte duur en alleen van toepassing op het Jiroftgebied, dat niet het enige gebied is dat geteisterd wordt.

 

De gerecupereerde small finds uit Jiroft en hun verwantschap met de omliggende culturen.

 

Onder de gerecupereerde small finds bevinden zich een aantal opmerkelijke voorwerpen, die mogelijk hun oorsprong aan het Jiroftgebied ontlenen. Een specifiek type objecten, namelijk de spelborden, zijn qua vorm en iconografie uniek voor het gebied. Van andere objecten, waaronder de handtasvormige objecten, de stempelzegels en enkele sieraden, werden vroeger in de aanpalende regio’s wel gelijkaardige objecten teruggevonden, maar nooit exact dezelfde objecten. Opvallend is ook dat bepaalde voorwerpen, die in Jiroft samen voorkomen, afzonderlijk lijken te hebben bestaan in de buurtregio’s. Uit deze bevindingen kan geconcludeerd worden dat Jiroft de kern moet hebben gevormd van een cultuur die zich uitstrekte over de omliggende sites. Verder noord-, oost- en westwaarts zijn de parallellen minder sprekend. Vooral in het noorden zijn er pas in een later stadium (2de mil. B.C.) gelijkenissen merkbaar. Het oosten blijkt dan weer de leverancier van zowel afgewerkte als ruwe albasten voorwerpen, aangezien er identieke albasten vazen in Jiroft en zelfs meer in het westen zijn opgedoken. Van de drie grote omliggende culturen kent het Jiroftgebied nog de meeste parallellen met het westen. In Mesopotamië, Susa en de Golfregio komen voorwerpen voor zoals er ook in Jiroft zijn gevonden. Ook iconografisch hebben de westelijke regio’s grote verwantschap. Kenmerkend voor de iconografie van zowel oost als west zijn het motief van de slang, de schorpioen, de schorpioenmens en de palmboom. De uitwerking van de menselijke figuur met grote amandelvormige ogen en een grote neus is bijna altijd overeenkomstig met antropomorfe figuren uit het westen. Terwijl die uit het noorden en oosten veel schematischer zijn. Daarnaast komen frequent geometrische motieven voor, zoals het trapvormige motief dat gerelateerd wordt aan de traptempel of ziggurat.

 

Datering van de voorwerpen en belang van het Jiroftgebied.

 

Op basis van de parallellen in de iconografie en de vormgeving van de objecten uit Jiroft en de omliggende sites en sites die verder weggelegen zijn, kunnen de objecten geplaatst worden in de tweede helft van het 3de millennium B.C. Omdat de voorwerpen afkomstig zijn uit clandestiene opgravingen kan geen exacte datering worden vooropgesteld. Een bijkomend probleem waar rekening mee gehouden moet worden is het feit dat er een kans bestaat dat er vervalsingen onder de objecten kunnen circuleren. Toch wijzen de recente wetenschappelijke opgravingen in het gebied op een originele cultuur die te dateren is in het 3de millennium. In die periode moet het Jiroftgebied een vrij welvarende regio geweest zijn, dat een centrale plaats in het handelsnetwerk tussen oost en west innam. Zelfs met de kustgebieden moeten er contacten hebben bestaan, zoals blijkt uit vondsten van schelpen afkomstig uit de Golfregio en de Indische Oceaan. Bovendien konden heel wat grondstoffen, die door andere culturen zeer gegeerd waren, plaatselijk worden ontgonnen. Zijn gunstige ligging binnen het handelsnetwerk en nabij natuurlijke bronnen heeft zich dan ook duidelijk weerspiegeld in de materiële cultuur van het Jiroftgebied.
