Jongeren die maatschappelijke onderwerpen, zoals vluchtelingen, in de ogen leren kijken: huts!

Burgerschapsvaardigheden of 21st century skills worden met de hervorming van het secundair onderwijs relevanter. Onder deze vaardigheden wordt ook de openheid voor andere culturen en specifiek de attitude of houding tegenover vluchtelingen verstaan. Recente peilingen tonen eerder een negatieve trendontwikkeling aan in de houding van Vlaamse jongeren. Media spelen een belangrijke rol.

 Dat kan wel invloed hebben, want als je er niets over weet en dan hoor je dat zo, dan denk je ook dat dat zo is. (leerling, 16 jaar)

Maar ook in het echt komen Vlaamse jongeren meer en meer in contact met vluchtelingen, zoals in de klas. Meer intercultureel contact zou zorgen voor een positievere houding.

Heel veel mensen denken nu dat moslims terroristen zijn, maar de moslim die in mijn klas zit is geen terrorist zoals op TV en veel mensen begrijpen dat niet totdat ze dat zelf zien. (leerlinge, 19 jaar)

Om de leefwereld van vluchtelingen dichter bij Vlaamse leerlingen te brengen, ontwikkelde het project PeaceCraft een serious game en interactief theaterstuk. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek wijst uit dat dit bruikbare spelvormen zijn om aan burgerschapshoudingen te werken, maar hoe ervaren Vlaamse leerlingen en leerkrachten dit? Is dit in overeenstemming met wat experts hierover zeggen? In dit onderzoek vonden 21 diepte-interviews plaats met 4 leerkrachten en 13 leerlingen die PeaceCraft ervaarden, aangevuld met 4 experts uit de vakgebieden onderwijs en/of serious games.

Hoe zit dat in het onderwijs?

Er zijn een aantal factoren die meespelen in hoe de houding ten opzichte van vluchtelingen zich ontwikkelt. De belangrijkste factoren, ook socialisatieagenten genoemd, zijn de media, scholen, familie en vrienden. Media blijkt, na de school, de grootste informatiebron te zijn. De school kan dan ook een belangrijke bevestigende of remmende rol spelen in de houding, want het is de plaats waar je alle jongeren samen bereikt.

Vlaamse jongeren krijgen te weinig les over burgerschapsonderwerpen zoals vluchtelingen. De richting die de jongeren volgen speelt mee in het al dan niet leskrijgen over zo’n onderwerpen. Ook wordt er te weinig aandacht gegeven aan algemene vaardigheden - zoals factchecking, kritisch argumenten vormen, actief luisteren en open communiceren. Jongeren geven aan dat er te weinig klasgesprekken worden gevoerd en dat ze niet genoeg op een kritische manier in dialoog gaan met elkaar.

De nieuwe eindtermen burgerschap spelen hierop in, al zal het nog enige tijd duren eer de volledige onderwijshervorming is doorgevoerd. Projecten zoals PeaceCraft proberen een tussenoplossing te bieden.

Euh wat? Serious games? Interactief theater?

Serious games zijn games die naast puur entertainment ook een educatief doel hebben. Ze worden ingezet in het onderwijs, om een beroep aan te leren, enzovoort. Interactief theater is een vorm van theater waarbij het publiek actief betrokken wordt en op het podium gaat om in dialoog te gaan met de acteurs. Voordelen van beide spelvormen zijn een hogere concentratie en betere inleving in het onderwerp. Dat spelen het leren vergemakkelijkt, is niettemin onderwerp van discussie. Attitudeveranderingen verwezenlijken via games of theater is volgens sommige studies misschien iets te optimistisch gedacht.

De spelvormen kunnen zowel apart als samen ingezet worden, waarbij de voorkeur gaat naar combinatie. De keuze hangt af van: de beschikbare tijd, het inzetbaar budget, het profiel van de leerlingen en de ervaring van de leerkracht met de spelvorm. Dit onderzoek brengt drie items aan het licht die van belang zijn als zo’n spelvormen in het onderwijs worden ingezet.

  1. Omkadering spelvorm

Er wordt aangeraden de spelvorm niet ‘gewoon’ eenmalig aan te bieden, maar die te omkaderen. We volgen hierbij het onderzoek naar burgerschapseducatie van Hoskins et al. (2008), Neys (2014) en Middaugh (2016). Concreet wil dit zeggen dat de omkadering het best bestaat uit een deel inleven, een deel informeren en een deel reflecteren waarbij de volgorde ervan vrij gekozen wordt. In het deel inleven worden leerlingen op een empathische manier betrokken bij het onderwerp. Dit kan aan de hand van een spelvorm zoals de game of het theater, aangevuld met persoonlijke verhalen van vluchtelingen zelf. Het deel informeren kan enerzijds via de spelvorm, al wordt aangeraden ook een korte voorbespreking te doen waarin het thema voorgesteld wordt en informatie zoals cijfers en definities voorzien worden. Dit laatste kan ook in een nabespreking. De grootste leerwinst bij zo’n spelvormen zit namelijk in het reflecteren, in de ‘civic talk’ of het uitwisselen van gedachten en meningen achteraf onder klasgenoten, vrienden en familie.

2. Steun voor de leerkrachten

PeaceCraft kan niet zonder de leerkrachten, de leerkrachten kunnen niet zonder PeaceCraft (expert vakgebied onderwijs)

Als verwacht wordt van leerkrachten dat ze bepaalde vaardigheden overbrengen aan leerlingen, dienen ze zichzelf ook comfortabel te voelen bij diezelfde vaardigheden. Om deze reden worden voor- of nabesprekingen dan ook eerder vermeden. Ook zijn leerkrachten nog niet echt vertrouwd met het gebruik van games in de klas, er bestaan te weinig handvaten voor. Oplossingen zijn een kant en klare handleiding en/of een praktische opleiding waarbij de voorkeur gaat naar de combinatie ervan. Ook zou er meer aandacht besteed kunnen worden aan zo’n vaardigheden in de lerarenopleidingen.

3. Bredere context van het onderwijs

Meer samenwerkingen tussen het beleid, het middenveld en de praktijk worden aanbevolen. Zo is er veel aanbod om rond burgerschapsonderwerpen te werken, maar scholen en leerkrachten vinden niet altijd de weg hiernaartoe. Wanneer projecten zoals PeaceCraft geïmplementeerd worden in het onderwijs, wordt een grondige kwantitatieve en kwalitatieve analyse aangeraden om de duurzame leerwinst in kaart te brengen. Hierdoor kunnen zo’n projecten op lange termijn gelinkt worden aan de nieuwe eindtermen burgerschap en op korte termijn aan de leerlijn actief burgerschap van het GO!.

En nu?

Ook zonder bovenstaande items te volgen, is het de moeite waard een kans te geven om scholen, leerkrachten en leerlingen actief aan de slag te gaan met burgerschapsonderwerpen zoals vluchtelingen.

 Het maakt altijd iets uit, al is het een druppel op een hete plaat. Je moet blijven proberen die onwetendheid weg te krijgen en hen in contact laten komen met. (leerkracht cultuurwetenschappen)
